Blacklight Retribution was pretty great. I played quite early in its lifespan, during an event which gave me a special nameplate - nothing more than a participation trophy, and at the time, loads of people used it.

Signed in a few years later to.play a few rounds, and some guy begged me to let them use my account because of that now-rare nameplate.

(I also had an extremely cool helmet and some seriously powerful guns I got for free in that game’s equivalent of a lootbox)

I vaguely remember a game where the focus was creating stuff socially on the ps3, had a very unique artstyle dont think it ever made the full release

Dil, do games w What's a cancelled game you really miss?

Lawbreakers was my favorite, high skill floor and ceiling games are my favorite. I wish ppl gave it a chance past its artstyle but matchmaking was rouh with barely anyone and the best players were insanely raw because of that high skill ceiling, high floor made it hard to catch up or feel good in early games I think.

ampersandrew,

I gave it a chance, and I remember the objective design being different for the sake of it to the point of being worse. They had a capture the flag mode involving charging a battery, but it could be charged to 99% at one base and then scored at the other base at the last second, making everything except the final play meaningless. It had a point control mode, but the points were only active in certain intervals, creating a real stop and go feeling that made the inactive periods as meaningless as the aforementioned first 99% of CTF.

Nosgoth. An asymmetrical, team based shooter where you played as either vampires or vampire hunters. The vampires had more health and mobility but were only melee while the hunters had range and utility. It was buggy and imbalanced and I loved it and clocked like 500 hours before they shut it down.

Exactly what I was here to write, had so much fun with that

Dil,

Was a ton of fun, I played it daily til it shutdown, I love when multiplayer games have fun traversal mechanics, tho it leads to many quitting if they do terrible early on.

Lance or sword and shield might be good to stay a bit safer and learn the monsters. This game series is all about understanding what you’re fighting, they will all have a “tell” when they go to do something. Some might take one step backwards and arch in a specific way, some might make a specific noise, and they’ll always follow with a specific move. You have to understand what they’re going to do so you can figure out how much time you have to attack.

You’re going to die a bunch, but after a while you’ll come to know how the monster you’re fighting will move and it will get easier.

After all that also get to learn the skills that come with armor pieces, you want specific skills to compliment play styles. I don’t remember freedom unite specifically, but for weapons with a shield you’d want a skill called “guard” that improves how blocking works, whether it’s taking less stamina when you get hit or allowing you to block once unblockable moves.

And as others have said, with the older monster hunter games you have to learn “the claw” lol they had absolutely atrocious camera controls

I keep editing as I remember other important things lol there’s a move called the “superman dive” that will save your ass. When your weapon is put away and you’re running AWAY from an attack, you can “roll” but it will make you do a dive that makes you invulnerable for a bit. You cannot be moving towards the monster or it won’t work and you’ll just do a normal roll. I also don’t remember if freedom unite has this as well, but in most monster hunter games you don’t have to get up when you get hit to the ground. If a monster knocks you down and you see they’re following with another move just don’t move, let your character stay down and you shouldn’t get hit.

There’s a lot of games being mentioned here that had a full run. Let’s talk about an actually cancelled game - SkySaga: Infinite Isles. Block game in the vein of Portal Knights that was extremely inspired.

The gameplay loop consisted of using “Keys” on a portal at your home island that would randomly generate a floating island with various objectives on it and a boss, all of which was harvestable for materials and blocks to build with back on your home island. There was a social hub city island everyone could access that alowed access to PvP and a few types of guilds with various combat, gathering, and exploration quests. Crafting was pretty good, allowing you to use metals with various properties to mix and match your own gear - some metals did more damage or applied an elemental effect, some had quicker swing speed, some were durable as armor and others not so much but they increased movespeed or jump height.

The game had about a dozen beta access phases then dropped off the face of the earth, with the server (and how it worked) lost forever. Completely lost to time, cancelled before it could release proper. No other block game has come close to the kind of structural appeal it had for me, and I think about it frequently. There’s a few reverse engineering projects in the works but they are stagnant.

I love a lot of the games in this thread but they had an actual release and real servers, you could play them for multiple years. Some others promised a bit more than they delivered, and were cut a bit short by EA or other trash publishers. SkySaga was killed before launch and placed in an opaque prison, truly cancelled.

StarCraft Ghost

ONI 2

Tar_alcaran,

Or the C&C3 Renegade game

thiseggowaffles,

Woah, what? They were going to make a Renegade-style game with C&C3? That would have been so much fun!

Charapaso,

Oni was so much fun: I would love to see how it feels now, but my nostalgia for it is off the charts. Martial art combos, plus sci fi guns: there’s just nothing else like it out there, which is a bummer.

villainy,

For anyone wondering, the game is Silent Hills. It was cancelled 10 years ago and you can still find people on eBay selling PS4s with the P.T. demo loaded on it for way too much money.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

That would have been quite something. I’ve seen P.T. being played and that was fucking scary.

vampire the masquerade bloodlines. the classic one had a bumpy release but patches and community work made it fun.

the supposed to be new one got cancelled. i forgot. budget reasons maybe.

It’s been a long time, but it’s supposed to be coming out this year.

jacksilver,

Thanks for this, I was confused cause I thought it was still being released.

leaky_shower_thought,

ohhh, good to know they didn’t stop development!

i had thought the project got shelved from that change in dev teams.

Nibodhika,

It is still being released but they had the designer/writer from the 1st one leading the writing team, but fired him due to “creative differences” so don’t expect anything similar.

Stamau123,

oh my god it’s going to be a disaster

can’t wait

  1. Learning the moves of a monster you have to fight helps immensely.

Either get bodied a few times and take notice of their moves, or watch videos of fights against any given monster.

  1. Adjusting your weapons and armor for the monsters resistances and vulnerabilities.
sleepybisexual,

A angle of my problem is the camera. You have experience with PSP ones?

RandomLegend,
@RandomLegend@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Nah sorry 🫤

sleepybisexual,

Whatweapon types would you recommend to start with?

Telorand,

Not the person you asked, and I’m speaking from World experience, but my favorite weapon is the Gunlance. A good mix of defense, slashing, and concussion, so you can break pretty much whatever you want. All around fun, since it felt like I could really push the monsters, rather than feeling like I was constantly on defense.

Sword and Shield was also really fun. Good combos and a decent all-rounder. I also enjoyed Bow.

Try out several on the same monster (one whose moveset you’ve memorized), and see what feels nicest. I actually played all weapons, because certain monsters were easier to fight with particular weapons.

Lastly, find YouTube videos that explain how to use the weapons and suggest common or useful combos. Good luck!

sleepybisexual,

Is it complex? I’m like super early game

ItJustDonn,

Do you have other MH experience?

Longsword was a lot simpler in Unite so that’s a good medium-weight weapon that you can dodge easily with.

Sword n shield is very beginner friendly for its item usage while wield (very important while learning how to paintball consistently or learn the timing windows for healing)

Hammer is great for learning because it has more low-commitment attack options than other slow weapons while you learn your openings

sleepybisexual,

No, my first mh game. A big part of my issue is camera while dealing with fastish monster. Mainly the ice totally not a velicoprey but ice. They spawn in groups and when they jump I can’t camera so keeping track is hard.

ItJustDonn,

iirc, Unite had an option that toggled whether moving forward was relative to the camera vs character orientation. If you remap the camera to the right stick, it’s way easier to circle-strafe. The left shoulder button is more ideal for sharp turnarounds, like if a mon charges past and is 180° behind you or after dodging

ItJustDonn,

Time to learn the claw grip, either on PSP PSP claw grip or if you’re emulating emulating claw grip

sleepybisexual,

I’m emulating, but its an rp4. How do I claw. Anything pics don’t show?

ItJustDonn,

Claw = use the side of your left index finger to control the d-pad camera. Left thumb still on stick to move, and your middle finger takes over the shoulder button. For the record, the claw isn’t really a fond memory (to me at least), even if it’s a funny one.

If it were me, I’d just remap the right joystick to the d-pad so you can spare your fingers the pain!

wirelesswire,

I tried MH Rise demo on Switch back when it came out, and it felt like I needed 3 thumbs to play it.
