Hoplite (puzzley turn-based mobile roguelike). Here’s a review I found: toucharcade.com/2014/01/08/hoplite-review/

I don’t like mobile games, but this one is really elegant. It respects you as a customer, unlike a lot of mobile games.

Haven’t played in a while, but I really enjoyed it a few years ago.

Wogi,

Hoplite is good! I’m sorry I downbooped you

grrgyle,

I guess this game is more well known than I thought

Templa, do gaming w Just finished Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 was our GOTY last year. The story was amazing, the game was polished… I didn’t hate Baldur’s Gate 3, but we played it on couch co-op and the experience was very unpleasant (plus the Act 3 was very unfinished).

Copy Kitty: store.steampowered.com/app/349250/Copy_Kitty/ has a demo

Fun elimination platformer. If you wish Kirby did more with the power mixing from Kirby 64, you’ll probably like it.

I’m so disappointed to see how successful Gamergate was in poisoning people on games journalism. The reason I know this vitriol isn’t organic is because it far outstrips the stakes.

The danger is buying a video game on bad advice and some of y’all are acting like Kotaku raped your mom.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, everyone’s waiting for a Silksong release date. I am too, if for no reason other than Fantasy Critic. I do still expect this game to release this year, given it got age rated in some territories back in February, but if it does release this year, it’s strange that it’s taken this long to get a release date. Every showcase where Silksong doesn’t have a release date is one where people are underwhelmed by any other game shown off.

As for games I’m looking forward to release dates for far more, I’d love to see them for:

  • Commandos: Origins (not so much the indie showcase but maybe in the partner direct)
  • Diesel Legacy: The Brazen Age
  • Mina the Hollower
  • The Rise of the Golden Idol

Hollow Knight fans preparing for disappointment (again):

Miphera, do games w What are some game series you would like to see revived? And if possible, which entry should the new game follow from?

A lot of people will disagree, but I loved Star Fox Adventures. It was easily my favorite Star Fox game.

3D Rayman games, the only one I played was Rayman 2, so that’s all I can go off of.

BIONICLE, the game to the movie was a bit janky, but so much fun!

Pokémon Rumble: I remember only liking the first one (didn’t play the second), and really disliking Rumble U. There’s a mobile game now apparently, but…no thanks.

A very obscure one: Onslaught, from the Wii Shop. A first person sci-fi shooter with Wii motion controls, playing on an alien planet with giant bug creatures. Quite reminiscent of Helldivers or Starship Troopers.

Asura’s Wrath: I think a remake would be nice, not sure if there’s much space for a sequel, the ending fit quite nicely.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: I’m gonna count this as its own franchise separate from the other Xenoblade games, and a remaster, remake or sequel would be amazing.

Bonus: Borderlands 2 had a good setup for a sequel, an incredible villain and such great characters. I’d love to see where they’d take their stories, like Maya & Krieg. Should be about time for Borderlands 3, I’m sure it’d be great! (FUCK WHYYYYY)

iamthewalrus,

Haven’t played it, but wasn’t there a Borderlands 3 a few years ago?

Miphera,

Yeah, that last one was sarcastic. They kinda fucked up the story, writing and characters. Villains were ass, writing for most beloved characters was basically a character assassination, Maya & Krieg never even met again, just everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

Gameplay was great, but I hated everything else so much that I uninstalled after 5h (with close to a thousand hours spread across the rest of the franchise).

iamthewalrus,

Ah, shame. Is it still worth a shot for someone who’s coming in fresh? I haven’t played any of the games in this series but to enjoy a good shooter.

Miphera,

There’s so much content, even if you don’t play BL3, you’ll have a lot of fun! BL1 and BL2 have a GOTY edition with all the DLC (from memory, between 4 and 6 story DLCs per game, BL2 also has 2 additional characters and a sort of max lvl / extra difficulty mode), and are super cheap at this point. Do wait for a sale if possible, BL1 GOTY Enhanced is frequently 67% off ($10), and BL2 GOTY 80% off ($9)

There’s also The Pre-Sequel, which came out after BL2 and plays between BL1 and BL2. Gameplay is like BL2 with some additions, but it’s not as good as BL2. Still worth playing imo, but the community is split on it. If you play it, even though it plays between BL1 and BL2, it’s intended to be played after BL2.

A lot of the more interesting things regarding character builds & weapons happens in NG+ and NG++, you can spend ages just replaying it and farming bosses & chests in the endgame, and the coop is also really nice (but not at all required). I definitely recommend starting with the first one, and if you do, I think Lilith has by far the most interesting gameplay. In BL2, I think almost every character has fun gameplay, just Axton feels a bit boring to me personally.

Out of Space a cozy co-op game similar to Overcooked but less chaotic.

AdNecrias,

I came here to write about this one… It gets chaotic once you’re a 4 man team that doesn’t know how to play the game :)

Bopl Battle is a hilarious party game for up to 4 people. The rounds go really quick so it’s a great game to play with friends when you have a limited amount of time, but the fun doesn’t wear out fast either.

Had to downvote, but the game is great. I play it with my kids and it is reliably hilarious. There are so many interactions that something surprising happens with amazing regularity.

PlexSheep,

I meet with 3 friends online every 2 weeks to discuss nerd stuff and play some video games together after, and bopl battle has been great for that.

NFL 2K. NFL 2K5 was so good and scared EA so much, it led to the EA/NFL exclusivity deal and the death of the entire football game genre for the last few decades now.

Telorand, do gaming w Just finished Alan Wake 2

Does it play like the first one? If so, I’ll just go read a plot synopsis. The gameplay was so dull and frustrating for me in the first one, but the story was good.

chloyster,

I find the game plays a lot better than the first one. I played the remaster recently and found it a bit of a slog to get through but absolutely adored the sequel

Telorand,

Good to know! Thanks

ModernRisk, (edited )
@ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The gameplay is similar/ the same. You have a light and a gun/ shotgun. Though the game is much more about the immensely dark atmosphere, storytelling and characters played in it. Honestly the game has some great shock-moments. I played it in PC with mouse and keyboard and the controls were (butter) smooth in my opinion.

Don’t forget the very first Alan Wake was released in 2010. So the gameplay will feel dull and lackluster in comparison to todays gaming standards. It’s unfair to compare the two games due to the amount of years and technological advancements of today.

You can watch a video or read synopsis but you’ll do yourself a disservice.

EDIT: changed ‘‘fill’’ to ‘‘feel’’

Telorand,

Thanks! I’m no stranger to old games, so I don’t hold the age against the first one. I just know I wouldn’t have fun if the actual gameplay (not the story elements) was largely the same.

I might watch someone play the first hour only, to see if it fits my playstyle.

teawrecks,

Totally agree that the first one’s gameplay doesn’t hold up. The second is a HUGE step up. Night and day difference.

Telorand,

Oh, good. Might be worth a look, then

lime, do games w What are some game series you would like to see revived? And if possible, which entry should the new game follow from?

i want the Just Cause series to continue on from the second installment but instead of focusing on the movement, focus on the world building and setpieces. the plot in JC2 is completely batshit insane and ends in a fistfight atop a speeding ICBM. they kinda just forgot about that part in the sequels in favor of adding tornado guns or whatever.

I really loved playing ps2 military shooters like SOCOM and Conflict Desert Storm. It would be fun to see how those games would be made today.

FluorideMind,

There was a mod for og insurgency about 8 years ago remaking socom it was really good.
