Welcome!

If you like space themed games (of different genres), there is also:

tyrant, do games w Do we have No Man's Sky fans here?

I just picked it up on a steam sale. Excited to try it out again. Played it a little a long time ago but didn’t know what to do. Apparently it’s gotten a lot better and I love space stuff

korendian, do games w Do we have No Man's Sky fans here?

Yup, been a fan for years, and it just keeps getting better. I really want to get a steam frame when it comes out so I can experience it in all its glory.

ordnance_qf_17_pounder, do games w Do we have No Man's Sky fans here?

It’s barely recognisable from the below average game that released in 2016. There used to be nothing to do in it, now there’s so much to do that it’s overwhelming. It’s a very good game now, and you have to give credit to Hello Games for what they’ve done to make it what it was always supposed to be.

Still some things I don’t love about it, but on the whole it’s well worth playing if you’re into that type of game.

13igTyme,

The way the game launched makes me never want to buy a game from them again. It’s nice it’s better now, but now the game is almost 10 years old. They straight up lied about what was going to be in the game a release.

Now they are working on a new game and I’ll read things about how ambitious it is and fans hope they can deliver.

Lol no. They will do the same thing and lie about what’s in it to get people’s money. They may eventually make the game better, but they should be doing that before releasing pure lies.

Rooster326, (edited )

As someone who bought it at launch, I give them credit for it. Hats off to them…

Still am never buying Hello Games games, or anything by Sean Murray, ever again.

$60 for an early access tech demo where they lied about dozens of features. It is still missing promised features after all of their work - which speaks more to the amount of bullshit they spew than the feature set because the features checklist is as shallow as a puddle.

I think you might have misjudged when LCDs became common as by the end of 2004, when Halo 2 released, LCD TVs were already a reasonable fraction of new TV sales, and in parts of the world, it was only a few months later that LCD TVs became the majority. For PC monitors, the switch came earlier, so it was clear CRTs were on the way out while the game was being developed. If they hadn’t expected a significant number of players to use an LCD and tweaked the game as much as necessary to ensure that was fine, it would have been foolish

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

It’s entirely possible. I was just basing the guess it was designed with CRTs in mind because growing up, everyone my age still had a CRT until around 2008/2009, which we then replaced it with Plasma TVs. So it’s entirely possible my assumption is biased or skewed

AnyOldName3,
@AnyOldName3@lemmy.world avatar

Obviously, most people don’t replace their TV every year, so it was years after new sales were mostly LCDs that most people had LCDs, but companies making content like to be sure it looks good with the latest screens.

ladicius, do games w Do we have No Man's Sky fans here?

Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle.

Nah, it’s better than that but this statement still holds true for me - after several weeks I’ve seen everything (i.e. the patterns behind everything), and that’s when it got repetitive. All in all it’s a very nice game.

brsrklf,

It’s not wrong, but the amount of random shit they added to it is enough to make a dive into it worth it to me, at least once in a while.

It’s certainly not deep, but there’s stuff to do, some room for creativity, and occasional funny weirdo creatures to encounter.

notfromhere,

That’s been my problem with it as well. I still do like dusting it off every now and again. It has the best land to space travel transition of any game I’ve ever played.

ladicius,

Those takeoffs into space are bangers, you are right. Really cool mechanics and visuals, that alone is worth trying this game.

FenrirIII,
@FenrirIII@lemmy.world avatar

I have done everything but finding goddamn freighter modules to improve my stolen pirate ship. I cannot find the bastard things anywhere and there’s no mod to give them to me 😡

Quetzalcutlass,

IIRC you can get them through the derelict freighter missions (which take forever and are kind of boring after the first one), or by blasting NPC freighters if you don’t care about reputation.

For the latter I’ve heard (but wasn’t willing to try myself to confirm) that you can just shoot the external cargo modules off of friendly freighters without them becoming mad and summoning sentinels.

I returned to it when the corvette update dropped. Might come back when there’s another huge update. I usually lose interest after two weeks of playing it, because things start to get repetitive.

the beginning of Halo 2 is so good. This right here probably being my favourite level in the entire franchise other than the entirety of Reach.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m always a sucker for 3 (Feels like a good in between for what I love in CE and 2 for me personally) and Reach.

But I’m very inclined to agree with the beginning being good. It’s one of the most memorable parts for me about the game, and I’d say franchise as whole

Usernamealreadyinuse, do games w Do we have No Man's Sky fans here?

I should give it a try again… Release was not perfect but I hear so many good stories about the game. Then again, I just started my first playthrough from the Wild Hunt which(er) takes enough time…

There’s !nomanssky but it’s not super active. You’re bound to find some fans in the general gaming communities like this one though.

I’m new to Lemmy BTW.

Welcome!

AethiopeRoot,

Thanks mate

Ah, Halo… the main image that showed up in my feed looked almost like part of Mass Effect 1, but the vehicle wasn’t right.

Same generation, but Mass Effect has a remaster, Legendary Edition. It’s been on sale on Xbox for $6 USD a couple times (what I paid for it)… and that’s for all three.

While I suppose they are technically three games, the intended use of the product is for you to import your clear save from the previous one to start 2 and 3. Your decisions from previous ones carry forward, even minor choices in the first one playing out in the third one.

For straight shooting, Halo wins, particularly against Mass Effect 1 and 3, but I think Mass Effect 2’s shooting was competitive to shooters contemporary to it. Though, it and 3 are a bit more like Deus Ex or Star Wars where you have tech/magic stuff you can do in addition to the guns. I tend to stick to pistols and assault rifles, but I’m known to throw a bit of magic here and there, especially the ones that eat shields.

As far as Halo, I only completed the first one (and did it on PC with keyboard/mouse). Played the first couple maps of the third one on Xbox, never could get the hang of it though. Only single player, never multi.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Mass Effect has been on my list for a bit after a friend bought me the Legendary Edition, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it shows up soon.

I know a little bit about it, but have mostly not dug very deep into it due to wanting to jump in blind (at my friend’s request)

popcar2, do games w Thank Goodness You're Here - most absurd & hilarious game what did I just play?

Loved the game, but… we don’t talk about that cow scene…

macncheese,

I can’t stop thinking about the last time you straighten up the fishmonger’s shop! 😂

tabris,

Reggie’s wife could learn a thing or two.

Gradually_Adjusting, do games w Thank Goodness You're Here - most absurd & hilarious game what did I just play?
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

Ooh how exciting.

I’m tempted, but I’d want to share in the fun with my kid. Anyone who’s played it, What’s the youngest you’d recommend?

MurrayL,

I wouldn’t say it’s suitable for kids - there’s a lot of innuendo and crude visual gags. Mid/late teens probably fine, but it’ll depend on your tolerance.

Defectus,

I played it with my 6year old. She absolutely loved it! And so did I.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah? Admittedly I’m calibrated to the 80s version of what “PG-13” meant. What was the most risque bit? Mine is pretty comfortable with non sexual nudity and rude humour, but anything sexually explicit he’s probably not ready.

dustyData,

There’s a couple of raunchy jokes. One implies a fish is a man’s penis, and he orgasms when you slap the fish repeatedly. There’s the cow you milk with a motion that imitates male masturbation. Also a couple of body horror stuff that look like an anus you enter into a fleshy intestine like cavern. Lot’s of sexual innuendo in dialogue jokes. Definitely not a kid’s game. Maybe play it first, it is a short game, and gauge if it is proper for your kid before playing it with them. Since the game is linear and most interactions are not optional. It’s more like teen immature humor.

Defectus,

Very good explanation. My kid didn’t pick up any of that luckily. But there are defiantly some obscene scenes.

Thunderbird4,

That guy who lives in the dumpster definitely shows full frontal nudity at a couple points.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

I might wait a year, based on what I’m hearing. He’s already got a weird sense of humour compared to kids his age, I should probably cool it.

Honytawk,

As soon as they can hold a controller and know somewhat about what a game is.

The controls are moving in a direction, jump and slap. And you can’t do anything wrong at all.

macncheese,

Some of the humor is quite adult but not explicit. I’d expect a lot of it to go over a kid’s head tbh and they’d probably laugh at the silliness. But you, the adult, know what you’re truly laughing at. And if you’re okay with that then the choice is yours.

gasgiant, do games w Thank Goodness You're Here - most absurd & hilarious game what did I just play?

Brilliant, original game.

Certainly never thought I’d play a game with “On Ilkla Mooar Baht 'at” as part of the soundtrack!

FoxFairline, do games w Thank Goodness You're Here - most absurd & hilarious game what did I just play?

One of the voiceactors has a crazy comedy podcast thats been running for ages called Regular Features.

Can recommend if you like the humor, since one of the devs is a fan of that show and got inspiration from it.

calamitycastle,

Said voice actor also runs a pub in Nottingham, the King Billy! And now I must depart BUZzzzzzz

macncheese,

I listened to an episode last night and it tickles the same absurd funny bone, loved it! I feel like there’s a touch of the absurd or whimsy in the British humor that I respond to, even though not being British I often don’t understand some references. Case in point, I love the podcast Three Bean Salad.
