Not sure if many will join me on it, but with Microsoft going on the death march for studios, this might be the first of their major releases I don’t even bother with on Game Pass. After all, they fired Tango Gameworks, who knows when they’ll cut these devs loose.
I finished the first one only last week. I almost dropped it over the puzzles especially the finding runes in the environment one. That one broke the momentum of the narrative/plot for me as you’d be going through an area and you’ve the narration going on or you’ve just been through a big action sequence and now you’ve hit a wall until the puzzle is solved. So I’m in no rush to play this one, I did think the last third was great though and definitely less repetitive.
I do agree that a lot of the find-the-symbols puzzles felt like an afterthought, but overall they didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the game. The story and presentation were fantastic and I thought the blind trial was extremely well done and one of my favourite video game levels.
Reckon this is worth picking up on sale? I’m interested in it having played all the previous games, but I’m worried the battle pass and mtx is ruining it.
Now it’s been out for a few seasons what do you think?
They made a lot of changes this season to weapon crafting and modifying that's made it much easier than previous seasons. There's also a couple things that they made available across all difficulty tiers instead of the two higher ones. I haven't looked into specific specs, but I believe they've also buffed a bunch of the skills.
I don't know about mtx, but the paid battle pass is really only cosmetic stuff and doesn't affect core gameplay, if that's what you're worried about. There are things called "smoldering ashes" which serve as season permanent buffs, but they are available on the free battle pass, so everyone gets those.
This is exactly where I’ve been for the last week, it’s insane just the sheer difference the changes they made have had on the overall gameplay.
It feels as if I went from playing the technical demo (season 3) of the game to the actual launch version (season 4) - which sounds dramatic but it’s the second time I’ve made it to WT4 (I usually can’t slog through this much) and never this early!
I just finished Immortals of Aveum. I really liked the story. Felt like an early 2000 science fiction action movie. It’s gorgeous looking but the shooting didn’t have enough oomph to be really fun, so I stopped playing after the credits rolled. Didn’t feel the need to 100% it.
It has a lot of Doom-like exploration for new gear and other goodies. Also a handful optional bosses which are pretty hard to beat. But the shooting revolves around basically 3 weapon types (magic types in this case): a DMR, an SMG and a shotgun. The variations thereof don’t feel different enough and the feedback lacks kick, so the shooting doesn’t feel very meaty. It’s still solid enough, but the story is definitely what carried me through the 20ish hours of the game.
The characters are great. It’s not BG3 obviously, but there’s enough depth there. Like I said, it’s on the level of a goofy action movie plot from 20 years ago. No ones gonna get an oscar but you’ll be entertained nonetheless.
I’ve played all of the mainline games over the years, but my only experience with FFXI was a couple of hours of the beta. Tried the marathon as a set of replays several years back and only made it to the start of IX. The load times and the glacial pace of the battles was too much by that point. I think I was planning on skipping XI.
Currently playing Dark Souls 3. Haven’t played it before, so I guess it’s a good time to check it off the list. I guess I’m near the end now.
I’m a bit disappointed by its linearity. It’s way more linear compared to Dark Souls. It’s also pretty easy compared to Elden Ring. I’m just using a base build. Mostly leveling up on strength stat without much thought.
I think DS3 is great in its own way and has some awesome areas, but it’s hard to compare anything to the first half of Dark Souls. That level design is just something else.
What I like about DS3 compared to ER is there are a lot less delayed attacks and fakeouts. I get that FromSoft needs to constantly up the challenge but it makes it harder to get the same kind of enjoyable combat flow, at least for me. DS3 has some bosses that are just so enjoyable, even though they’re not super hard.
Oh and, don’t know if you’ve done them yet but the DLCs should be more challenging than the main game, if that’s what you’re after.
I’m about 60% through Ori and the Blind forest. Its curently scratching an itch I have for metroidvania games.
However, I learned that instead of patching the original game or releasing a DLC, they just made a re-release and im not buying the game a second time just for a new area and some improved QoL with fast travel.
I’m further behind in Ori but I’m enjoying it greatly. I’m not a big metroidvania aficionado, but I played and loved Hollow Knight despite it’s difficulty (some of the bosses really tested my tolerance for punishment). I appreciate that Ori is (so far) a more accessible game.
Watcher Knights I think are near the top of my list. I just rewatched my recording of beating them and I was fumbling so badly lol. It’s obvious I’m running with the “pure desperation” tactic rather a more skillful approach, but it finally managed to work out.
I was addicted to exploring that world but I am satisfied with the one playthrough I think.
My wife was playing Ori around its release, we both got stuck on the first tree escape, where it floods. Absolutely massive difficulty spike for a relatively chill game to that point. Beautiful game though and I love the sound track.
