Brace yourselfes

made crypt of the necrodancer and phantom brigade , both of which are really good ideas and if you haven’t checked them out, you should.

Arkane Studios, for Dishonored, Prey, Dark Messiah, Deathloop.

Used to be Looking Glass Studios. And then Ion Storm. Do you see a pattern?

Grzmot, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

Boomer today is used for anything that’s old, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you get Gen Xers that get called boomers. Since boomer shooters are a homage to old shooters, we call them boomer shooter. The ultimate problem is that it’s just catchy, so unless you find a more catchy term, you’re shit outta luck.

bonegakrejg, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

I’ve been saying this forever too! Boomers were the ones complaining about thier kids playing them back in the day because of the violence and demonic imagery.

In the 90s people called them "Doom-like"s. I usually just say “90s FPS games”. Which I guess could be confusing and make people think I’m talking about framerate, but eh.

Renacles, do games w Best sidequests in the Fallout games?

Wasteland survival guide and the mechanist quest are some of my favorites but Fallout 3 has fantastic side quests in general.

Fallout 2, 3 and New Vegas are basically a pile of side quests with an optional main story.

bionicjoey,

Wasteland Survival Guide combined with the evil ending for the Megaton bomb quest is one of my favourite bits in Fallout 3.

I get that the term doesn’t line up age wise with actually Boomers in terms of calendar years, but also video game generations are shorter than social generations. We’re currently on the “ninth-generation” of video games, and Doom came out at the beginning of the third generation of video games. So you could consider Doom-likes to be 6 generations old, and baby-boomers to be 4 generations old. So in terms of “generations”, Boomer shooters should maybe be named after an older generation such as the “Greatest Generation” (6 generations ago). Therefore I propose we call Doom-likes “Greatest Shooters” instead of “Boomer shooters”.

Oh, I’m liking this take. Get ready for “Z Shooters” and “Alpha Shooters”.

frog, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of March 10th

Playing Subnautica this week. Having the slight problem that I find all the small fish so adorable that I feel bad about cooking and eating them. It’s also worth noting that I have thalassophobia, which is impeding progress a little because underwater caves are scary, deep water is scary, not being able to see the bottom is scary, and not being able to see the surface is scary.

Skua,

As a fellow scared-of-the-ocean-ist, I actually feel like it kinda adds to Subnautica. The game is meant to have some horror. We just get a bit extra

frog,

Yeah, it’s definitely more of a horror game if a lot of the setting fills you with primal dread! I’m definitely enjoying it, just… only in small doses.

It looks like a tractor… that is green?

Bastion

Albbi,

Such a good game. Those guys are my favourite developers.

mathematicalMagpie,

I recall Bastion winning GoTY from some major publications.

Does a disc even matter these days? There’s still a 100gb patch and likely internet connection required?

llii,

Yes. You can resell discs.

etchinghillside, do games w What does getting "delisted" off Steam means for games I already own?

I still have Rocket League and might expect the same behavior. It just won’t be sold or appear in search.

Radicaldog, do games w What are some good games with *zero* replayability?

A lot of people are posting games that are short and linear. But to match your energy, games that cannot be replayed unless you forget what you learn;

  • Case of the Golden Idol is a mystery/deduction game, a la Obra Dinn.
  • Toki Tori 2 is a puzzle metroidvania, where you can do your full moveset from the start - tweet and stomp. Right from the first screen, big chunks of the map can be shortcut through once you put your later learnings into practice.

I’m currently playing through the ace attorney series, couch party w my fiancee. We’re having a blast, but there’s absolutely no doing this a second time. The nature of the games is such that you can’t really progress in any of the cases without having asked every question of every witness, gathered every piece of evidence and explored every relevant branch in cross-examination, so by the time you finish a case there’s just nothing left to go over a second time.

SmoochyPit, do gaming w Let's discuss the 3ds family?

I bought a Japanese “new 3ds” system about 2 years ago off of eBay and I’ve been using it a lot! I’ve been loving the Ace Attorney Trilogy lately, but I also played

  • SM64 via a homebrew 3ds port
  • NSMB2
  • SM 3D Land
  • Shantae 1 & 2 (gbc and dsiware, but I wanna play the 3rd, which is a native 3ds game)
  • Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition (dsiware, originally gba)
  • Pilotwings Resort
  • CTGP-7 (great mk7 modpack)
  • So, so much Picross

My favorite 3ds game is Pushmo! I played it when I was younger, but it’s still fantastic.

I also loved the 3ds ecosystem outside of strictly games. Mii maker, Streetpass and Nintendo Video were all really fun extras.

Also the VB emulator Red Viper just recently released, so if there’s ever a time to try virtual boy games, it’s now! 3D baybeeee!!

blindsight,

Nice. Wario Land for the Virtual Boy was a fantastic game. It’s a shame so few people have played it.

sleepybisexual,

I have a new 3ds too, pokemon sun was good. To be fair I don’t remember any bad games on the system
