4.8 in the app store, only 75 mb and it’s got great reviews, people seem to like the story. I went ahead and downloaded it. Sounds relaxing lol

I love Lethal Company :) It's so fun and silly, and it has ridiculously deep mechanics that keep it interesting to play for hundreds and thousands of hours. I've been playing it solo for a while now and it's a really good challenge.

Damn, i can’t imagine playing solo. I struggle just playing with two people sometimes. Major respect to you

my friends and i can never get past one or two quotas before we’re eliminated. we end up drowning on the way back to the ship or not finding enough scrap in time ;-; still fun though

The game can be brutal. I think my friend who hosts backs up the save every quota just in case, we’ve never had to use the backup for this save yet though (we’re about 4-5 quotas in i think?)

Steam link, pleased to say demo works for Windows, Steam Deck (which means Linux), and Mac. Pretty sure this is Fishing Paradiso

For me I stopped playing because the switch is a horrifically uncomfortable console that can barely render the game at a playable frame rate, let alone a good one

Really should emulate it sometime

lime,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

if you’re willing to try softmodding, you can comfortably overclock the switch to run tears at 60 in almost every situation.

easily3667,

Works well in emulator

Did stop playing cause I was bored of the repetition and the unskippable cutscenes. Aka I don’t actually enjoy Nintendo games.

endeavor,

Emulate it on deck, I heard it does great there.

Abnorc,

I’m reading online that the game doesn’t even maintain 30 FPS on the switch in docked mode. That’s kind of crazy for a console game released in 2023. I get that it’s a cheaper console, but at some point, they need to bite the bullet and just manufacture something with better hardware. No wonder people are trying their hardest to emulate the switch.

    I sure as fuck am. I have no problem letting you, the poster, and everybody else know I’m sick of this shit.

    OP Who is now blocked, GET A LIFE AND FORGET TO POST A SCREENSHOT. This screenshot stuff is PURE GARBAGE.

    Zahille7,

    People did shit like this all the time on reddit. Why are you personally taking offense to this?

    The best part starts at the train rails all the way to the canyon level and waking up in a processing plant. It’s a huge chunk of the single player mode that was full of action.

    I just finished my first playthrough of Half-Life and wish I had known about this alternate version, it looks great. Thanks for the write up.

    Zahille7,

    Imo (and most other fan’s opinions) you should absolutely start with the OG, if nothing else than to see how gaming has evolved and such.

    If you’re feeling it, I’d recommend just jumping into BM. With the original being so fresh in your mind, you’ll really appreciate the work these people put into their remake. It’s so full of love for everything in the original (and a bit of HL2) that it still kinda blows me away with all the little details and such. The scientists and other NPCs all look distinct now and have different personalities and voices, and before shit hits the fan you’ll hear plenty of little banter and idk chat between your coworkers as you make your way to the rest chamber.

    There’s also, as a mod for Black Mesa, another team remaking Blue Shift in the new engine and all. They’re not done with the game yet, but what they have is about 3-4 hours worth of story finished (the first 5 or 6 levels I believe), and it’s actually expanded on even more than in Black Mesa or the original Blue Shift. There are more named characters, extra parts added to missions, and it feels like the same care went into remaking Blue Shift as went into making Black Mesa.

    There’s also a fun part at the beginning that has an overlap with Black Mesa where you, as Barney, see Gordon go by in the tram, and I think he flips you off in like a teasing playful way.

    eezeebee,
    @eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

    It absolutely brought me back to the late 90s shooters I grew up with. Lots of fun, but there were also a lot of parts I got stuck on, too. I will need some time before I play again / consider the BM version - maybe after HL2. Thanks for the additional info.

    Wahots,

    Play them back to back! It offers a really nice juxtaposition. I did a whole half life playthrough with all the mainline games + VR and HL + BM :)

    When I played Half Life 1 for the first time, I almost immediately lost interest after getting to Xen. When I played Black Mesa, I almost cried when I got there. Best fan-made remake I’ve ever played!

    cobysev,
    @cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

    They put a ton of effort into remaking Xen so that it blends better into the gameplay and story. I think I read somewhere that Half-Life took about an hour to slog through Xen, but Black Mesa, despite having around 4 hours of Xen gameplay, was actually really enjoyable.

    Flemmy,

    Also it has the Gonarch battle, which looks like gonads on legs.

    Quazatron,
    @Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

    I loved Black Mesa up to this point. They turned Gonarch into a RPG sponge in an arena full of hard to avoid clutter which makes it nearly impossible to dodge the attacks.

    BlemboTheThird,

    The key to having fun with the gonarch fight (and other huge chunks of Xen too, like the Gargantua chase and Nihilanth) is to discover that the jump pack is broken and if you hold your crouch key, it tricks the game into thinking you never touched the ground. So you never lose momentum and can infinitely slide around at a thousand miles an hour, boosting your speed every time the jump pack recharges a bar. If you’ve never learned Source airstafing, the wide open first stage of the gonarch fight is a great place to start.

    I do agree the gonarch was changed to be a ridiculous sponge though. Its regular health bar is set a bit too high anyway, but on top of that it’s actually invulnerable through the whole sequence between the first and last stages of the fight. Which would be fine, except they didn’t do anything to communicate that to the player! It still bleeds, it still makes pain noises, and the only way to figure it out is to waste a bunch of time dumping ammo into it. Very silly oversight.

    Quazatron,
    @Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

    Finally, someone who understands my pain. Thank you for the insights.

    Damn was I wrong. You are building the Lemmy museum of videogames.
    Thank you!!!

    cobysev,
    @cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

    Thanks for your support! My posts originally started as just a random screenshot or two of the latest game I was playing. But I always hated how people just talked about specific video games like everyone on the thread was intimately familiar with them. Especially if it was a game that sounded interesting to me. I wanted to know more about it!

    So I decided to use my screenshots as a way to introduce newcomers to each game; give them a little intro to the plot and gameplay so they’d be interested in trying it out for themselves. Or to remind previous players of a great game they hadn’t played in a while.

    By the time I started writing long-form blog entries on video games, I already had a bit of a series going and I didn’t want to suddenly change the title of my numbered posts. So they are “random” screenshots of my games, but they’re also a spoiler-free in-depth exploration of each game.

    One day, I plan to go back and re-do some of my earlier posts so I can actually have in-depth discussion on those games too.

    I’ve also been archiving my posts on a personal blog, in case any of them get taken down or blocked here for any reason. If anyone’s interested in checking out my history of posts, it’s a bit easier to review the archive at that link.

    anakin78z, do games w Is Baldurs Gate 3's voice acting so great that it ruined other games for me?
    @anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

    One thing I find jarring about BG3 is the lack of vo for the player character. It seems like a weird omission in this day and age. (Not counting the dumb ‘I clicked here, so my player has to say something’ vo. Like, shut the fuck up with your dumb chess references, Gale!)

    brucethemoose,

    It’s supposed to be immersive, I think, so as not to force a voice that doesn’t match the roleplaying in your head.

    I’m with you, though, I’d much prefer VA.

    Elevator7009,

    I am in the other camp, I like the immersion.

    I also have a tendency to not bother with VA, though, and to just click through the second I finish reading the dialogue, except for lines in particularly dramatic parts of the story. Sometimes not even then. Just figure I’d offer a counter opinion especially since this thread is probably going to be full of people who always choose voice acting when it is an option, given the thread is all about it. I am glad so many people derive joy from it, just because it is Not For Me doesn’t mean I think it’s Bad And Worthless :)

    Coelacanth,
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

    I played BG3 straight after Cyberpunk and that really stood out to me as well. The immersion and emotional impact of voiced protagonist lines really got me invested in Cyberpunk in a way I missed in BG3.

    Lesrid,

    They recorded some lines for the custom character. They think aloud when you approach the gith gank squad.

    They also reverted a decision to have all the origin characters do a bizarre past tense narration in favor of the present universal narration the familiar narrator VA does present tense. Maybe they abandoned having the player character speak when they changed that course.

    kieron115,

    I think the silent protagonist choice is valid in more of “sandbox” story like BG3. Speaking for myself, voiced protagonists tend to “lock” me into a specific character. I absolutely love the voice acting for Geralt of Rivia but when I play a witcher game I’m not inserting myself into the game, I’m becoming Geralt and making choices based on how I believe Geralt would make them.

    anakin78z,
    @anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

    I don’t really see it being a sandbox. I mean, all answers are given, and you select from those choices. That’s the same as other games that have pc vo. I feel like it would have made more sense to have no voice options at all, and to just get rid of the ridiculous quips. That way, you create your own voice in your head. In no universe would the character I created complain about having to put her hands onto everything before opening a door.

    Anyway, not a big deal, but like I said, it was a bit jarring.

    Here’s a bonus screenshot for you. I really like this image, just because it’s sort of an ominous “quiet before the storm” shot. Seeing both scientists watch you with silent anticipation as you’re about to cause a world-altering event in that next room.

    fritata_fritato, do gaming w What game do you really want to play, but haven't yet because you feel it in your soul that it will get a remake/remaster soon enough?

    All power to you, but I honestly don’t enjoy remakes. I know it’s illogical but playing remakes changes my perception of the old game in a way I feel like I’ve lost something.

    Remasters are different and I’ve moved to unity versions of doom and daggerfall happily.

    brsrklf,

    Thinking about those I’ve played, I don’t think remakes have ever detracted from the original to me.

    The first time I finally completed Metroid 1 was shortly after Zero Mission (which had the cool effect that the locations of some power ups was still fresh in my mind).

    I also enjoyed Samus Returns despite it missing the point of Metroid 2, and that didn’t make Metroid 2 worse in retrospect.

    Kind of similar with Majora’s Mask 3D, Mario 64 DS…
