PerfectDark, do games w Old gamers don't understand what mobile gaming has become
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Mobile gaming, on Android, is an interesting space right now. I used to buy flagship phones exclusively, as high spec as I could just…because I could. I played a few emulated Nintendo Switch games on them, as well as the odd Game Pass title (with a telescoping GameSir Xbox mounted controller thing) and then I realized I really had no use for them. I rarely played, and my most recent phone purchases have been mid-range.

That said, so much is now possible on Android. You can emulate everything from Switch to PS3, use pretty front-ends to use as a launcher station (a quick note of appreciation for the totally FOSS option - Lemuroid), and as unbelievable as it still is to me, you can even play full PC games like GTA V using winlator

The scene for Android emulation is incredibly dramatic with frequent in-fighting, but also pretty impressive from a technical standpoint. It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea - and that’s fine, but the mobile scene which isn’t just gatcha games hooking kids on the Play Store is so varied. Then you’ve got actually impressive games like DREDGE getting a Android release, replete with custom builds and changes for the Android system (no lazy ports!). Heck, even No Man’s Sky is coming to Android soon!

Still Project Zomboid, it’s been like 10 years. The game have evolved, and current unstable version includes a lot of completely overhauled mechanics. I’ve seen some bugs, but those guys know their job, so even a “buggy” content works better than some “released” other games.
Recently got Green Hell, and this is one of the best survival experiences I’ve seen. Basically you are dehydrated, starving, and infested by parasites in South American jungle, but on a good side, you have some meat to fry if you won’t die before you’ll manage to make fire.

RightHandOfIkaros,

Waiting on Build 42 to get multiplayer so I can play it with my brother…

I’m going to be waiting a long time again, aren’t I?

toofpic,

I think so - to sync all of the new stuff (ragdolls alone) for multiple people is a big work. And I already had a multiplayer-like bug where the game hung on me when I was driving. When I reloaded, the car was stopping in front of me, and I was standing on the road with zeds around. I survived, but damn!
They changed survival with the animals - I’m living on a farm, drinking milk, making bone stuff

I have a lifelong friend with Addison’s and it always seemed horrible to have to constantly manage and worry about. And he was fortunate enough to not also have Diabetes!

I adore your posts and will miss them dearly, but please take care of yourself and focus on your health. Don’t push yourself, if I understand right extra stress is particularly bad.

Much love ♥️

I haven’t seen the Lego games mentioned here. (Lego Indian Jones, Lego Batman, etc.)

They tend to be story driven, and have excellent amounts of play-testing, resulting in an enjoyable playthrough that I’ve always been able to finish.

(Except Lego Dimensions, which was developed separately, and not to the same play-testing standards.)

brygphilomena,

Lego games are great for just putting on and playing. So very little intro tutorials and learning. They just are fun.

I’m in the same boat where I don’t want anything that takes too long to get into. I don’t have the time to learn complex mechanics anymore.

Reil, do gaming w Are there any Android controllers with split D-pads?

Pretty sure that if you have a Dualshock 4 or 5,there should be a way to just use that! Modern controllers should work as generic Bluetooth controllers

theangriestbird,

If u go with this, OP, highly recommend a controller clip like one of these: https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/2ef420f9-9c1f-4f67-ac19-8dc3efe3a304.jpeg

pimento64, do games w Are there any Android controllers with split D-pads?

Is there a reason you can’t use a Playstation controller?

kayky,

How can I get them to pair with Android?

I don’t know much about it, but it looks like something specific is required ti pair controllers with an Android phone. I can pair them just fine with my PC.

I’m mostly asking out of curiosity; a regular Playstation controller isn’t able to hold the phone.

scott,

It’s been like more than a decade but there was some script I used to mod a PS3 controller (via USB) to connect to generic Bluetooth devices. They use Bluetooth, it’s just something specific value that needed tweaked.

glimse,

Hold Home and Screenshot until it turns on and starts flashing then pair it on your phone

Quetzalcutlass,

You need to hold the PS button and select (I’ll never stop calling it that) until the LED starts flashing, then it’ll be in pairing mode.

You can buy phone mounts for PlayStation controllers. It’d definitely be cheaper than a whole new controller.

kayky,

Thanks a ton for explaining this for me. I tried it out and it worked like a charm.

Now I will look for phone mounts.

If you liked Skyrim, check out Enderal - it’s a total conversion mod, but in Steam as it’s own game. It’s much more linear than Skyrim - the world still feels open, but it’s much more dense, and it’s scaled more like a traditional RPG, so if you wander off the intended path too far, you’ll get your ass beat by mobs that are much higher level than you.

Side quests are meh, with a notable exception of the Rhalata line, which is kind of like a combo of thieves guild and dark brotherhood. Main quest line is fucking wild.

If you skip the vast majority of side quests, you might have an issue with scaling, since you’ll be missing out on all that xp. If you run into that and don’t want to do the quests, just use the command console to cheat some in.

kinkles, do games w Hesitating getting a Switch 2 (1st game console in 15 years)...
@kinkles@sh.itjust.works avatar

The screen thing is really overblown. Yes, there are technical analysis that point toward issues. However most people, including myself and several of my friends, don’t notice anything wrong in real life. Maybe if you’re an absolute snob about display tech you’ll notice something is off but that’s it.

If you are planning to play docked with family then the battery life isn’t really an issue.

If you are only going to use it for Switch 2 games then there’s no hurry to buy one now. There’s hardly any. But there’s a big catalog of fun Switch 1 games you can play on it that make it viable to buy now.

rumschlumpel, do games w What are your favourite single-player games without much fluff, grinding or difficulty spikes?

I usually have a good time with isometric fantasy rpgs in the vein of Baldur’s Gate. They don’t really have grind, the world is generally well-filled with a relatively dense story and interesting quests (denser than Skyrim at least), and if the game becomes too hard you can turn down the difficulty. Though you do need to actually be interested in the combat mechanics (which are much more complicated than e.g. in Elder Scrolls games) to really enjoy these games, IMO. One downside is that these types of games are usually really long; I’ve dropped a couple of them halfway because they overstayed their welcome.

Some examples:

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 (don’t really need to have played 1+2 to enjoy this one, though they’re still very good)
  • Divinity: Original Sin 1+2
  • Pillars of Eternity 1+2 (2 has much better combat, but the first one is pretty important to understand the world)
  • Tyranny (this is a relatively short one)
  • Pathfinder: Kingmaker 1+2

For more Skyrim-style games, I really enjoyed the Gothic series. I think their level of grind is about the same as Skyrim (probably a little less, but it’s been a while), and if you can get past the outdated graphics of the early titles they’re quite fun. Especially the dialogues, they aren’t as serious as Skyrim’s.

@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Oh, and I just remembered the old Thief games. They had pretty consistent difficulty. At least for the first two. I cannot remember if that was retained with the third because it was a little more open in terms of what you acquired in the hub world and took on missions. And we don’t talk about the fourth (which was a reboot nobody wanted, not even the dev team).

Maybe the Half-life games? You go through the game on rails, the most challenging part is the final bosses but you can skip those or use cheats.
