RebekahWSD, do games w What are some great games that require you to bust out a notebook and pen?
@RebekahWSD@lemmy.world avatar

I usually wrote a lot of scribbles for Stardew Valley, at least when trying to go for perfection.

Heaven’s Vault feels like it should have its own journal, but it really didn’t.

Sid Meier’s Pirates! could use a notebook at points or at least scrap paper.

theunknownmuncher, do pcgaming w Budget gaming: steam deck or build a cheap gaming PC?

Steam deck is definitely a viable alternative, but I’d still go with building a desktop if that is an option to you and if you do not need the portability of steam deck. $600-$700 will get you a pretty decent system (especially if you already have a monitor, mouse, and keyboard) that you can continue to upgrade in the future.

BarrelAgedBoredom,

Yeah the 600-700 figure is just for the PC, I made a little room for a monitor, keyboard and headset/speakers as I would wind up needing those whichever way I went

theunknownmuncher, (edited )

Given that you also need to build a library of PC games, this could swing the needle towards the steam deck depending on what games you want and how patient you are to buy them. But because you can build that library over time, and PC games tend to be cheaper than console games and have much better sales, I still lean toward suggesting you build a desktop.

BarrelAgedBoredom,

I’m not in a rush by any means. Between working full time and being in college, I don’t have a lot of time to play games. I have a handful of AAA titles I’m interested in, but indie gaming has been a pretty large draw for me towards PC gaming in general. There’s so many interesting and innovative titles out there that I simply haven’t had an opportunity to play on my Xbox

theunknownmuncher,

I think a desktop will pay off in the future when it’s time to upgrade again because you can at least reuse the peripherals, case, PSU, fans, hard drives, typically the CPU cooler, maybe GPU unless that is being upgraded, and maybe even the mobo+RAM depending on the upgrade path. I think the AMD AM4 platform is currently the best bang for the buck, but will almost certainly require replacing mobo+RAM on your next future upgrade.

g0nz0li0, do games w What are some great games that require you to bust out a notebook and pen?
@g0nz0li0@lemmy.world avatar

I hear Lorelei and The Laser Eyes was specifically designed around the idea of the player using a physical notepad to help solve the puzzles. Recently released and reviewed strongly, you should check it out if not already on your radar.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

It definitely does, and I’ll second the recommendation, but at least one set of puzzles only really requires the the notepad because they didn’t give you sufficient software tools in game, not because it couldn’t be done well in game.

RubberElectrons, do games w Making peace with liking very few games?
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

It’s ok dude. What do you look for in games, is there a common theme?

I’m the same, I actually look for cinematic games with clever, interesting stories. Idgaf about multiplayer or any of that shit, I want to be a director in my own movie.

Bioshock, half life 2, LA Noire, and so on.

aesthelete,

You like horizon? I played the first one and thought the story was pretty good. Maybe not like Bioshock level, but better than most games of the type.

RubberElectrons,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Never played actually. I’ll check it out. I don’t have much free time generally as I work on a lot of projects, so I usually look for really good stories if I’m going to invest my time.

I’ll take a look though, thanks for the suggestion.

aesthelete,

Sure, no problem. Hope you like it.

RightHandOfIkaros, (edited ) do games w How Xbox backward-compatibility works?

AI is not a great source to ask for any sort of factual information, just a heads up. Its good for creating new stuff, like improvising story narratives or something like being a TTRPG dungeon master, though. I just wouldn’t ever rely on anything it says to ever be factually true.

Im not an Xbox/Microsoft employee, but I will answer to the best of my knowledge. Some or all may be wrong though.

  1. Both.
  2. It does not transform the game at all as long as there are no bugs. Usually the only benefit is increased internal resolution, and sometimes increased framerate Everything else is identical to the original release.
  3. AFAIK, no. When you install the game it doesn’t actually copy the files, it downloads them because some of the files are patched. No internet means you cant download. I think it also needs occasional connection to check. I do think you can play offline but not for 20 years straight.
  4. To my knowledge, no, there is no significant difference. I think it probably is exactly identical, actually. It is however, different from how backwards compatibility worked on the Xbox 360. It is significantly improved.
  5. Cross-generational System Link. Its cool being able to have one player on Original Xbox and one on Series X in the same game.
SolarPunker,

In reference to point 2 I would like to ask you a question: do the x86 versions that are downloaded offer improvements over the original X360 games in terms of image contrast (notoriously dark on that platform) and audio? PS3 games sounded better at the time due to blurays and audio chip.

RightHandOfIkaros,

It is exactly the same game. Audio quality will be identical to the X360 release.

The picture may be a bit brighter, I haven’t noticed the X360 being darker. But picture output is effected by the emulator in the same way that picture output on a N64 emulator will appear brighter than a real N64 plugged into the composite plugs on an LED TV.

De_Narm, do games w What are your most recent games played?

  • Witcher 3 (don’t judge)
  • Eiyuden Chronicles

PS4:

  • Code Vein
  • Disco Elysium

TachyonTele,

Witcher 3 can’t be worse than Xcom2 on the switch. No judgement here.

Most of the really good games have been posted already, so here are three that you should play regardless if you’ve never heard of them before:

  1. Frog Fractions
  2. Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm
  3. GAME OF THE YEAR 420 BLAZE IT

Check them all out because they’re short and free

superkret,

notabot, do games w Blizzard may have violated the UK GDPR following my 2019 Data Erasure Request

Whilst it’s quite possible they’re up to no good, it’s also possible that someone is fraudulently using your payment details in Irvine to create a new Blizzard account. It sounds like your bank already blocked your card, which is good, but they may also be able to block payments to Blizzard when the card is unblocked.

vikingtons,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I thought about that, but it’s an entirely new card. Even if they had the AN, SC, Card number, they’d still need the new expiry date and security number. I don’t think these are required for business, however.

notabot,

Is there any chance your new card details got leaked from somewhere you used them? Using stolen details to sign up to something like that and, say, making a pre-order, would be a good way for a crook to validate them without a transaction appearing on your statement.

If it’s not that, then Blizzard definitely have some awkward questions to answer. Good luck!

vikingtons,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I suppose there’s a chance but it’s not even my main payment method. I primarily use an entirely different card from a different vendor for the majority of my purchases today.

I’m also wondering what a fraudulent customer would need to do to warrant a test charge. I can’t think of anything an end user would do to invoke an attempt of $0.00 on their first transaction with my details.

notabot,

Pre-ordering something would usually cause a $0.00 transaction to confirm the card details are valid. It would be a ‘pre-auth’ transaction where the merchant reserves an amount on the card for payment at a later date, when they ship the item. If a fraudster makes a pre-order they xan validate that the card details are valid, then cancel the order, usually leaving the victim none-the-wiser. In your case, the bank noticed the transaction and notified you, but that seems to be rare. Once the fraudster knows the details are valid, they can sell them on.

It’s just a theory, and unless your bank and Blizzard work together to track the transaction, why it happened, and who instigated it, its going to be difficult to get to the bottom of it.

vikingtons,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I see, good to know. There’s always potential for that. I suppose we’ll see in the coming weeks.
