Tattorack, do games w Oblivion Remastered Impressions (and Discussion Thread)
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Can’t run the game because Unreal Engine runs like crap on Arc GPUs… Or in this case, not at all. :/

I’ll have to wait till MESA 25.1 drops later next month to see if it fixes my issues.

Besides that, from the few gameplay videos I’ve seen; I don’t like the Argonians. From the reveal video the developers said they’re using the same lip-sync animations for all races/species, and it’s very easy to tell that the large, blunt faces Argonians have in the remaster are a design decision for this. It still doesn’t look right either because the teeth inside their mouths are animated with the lips.

Other than the Argonians, however, the game looks great. Just wish I could play it. This was my first Bethesda game, and the first open world game of its kind I played.

MonkeyBrawler,

How often do you have issues with that arc card? Considered getting one for a spare pc.

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Only with Unreal Engine games, it seems. That includes Direct X 12 implementations in Unreal Engine 4 games:

  • The Ascent runs at 2 fps on the main menu, where it basically just renders one dude standing on a roof with a completely red background. It’ll also freeze.
  • Outer Worlds Spacer’s Choice Edition also runs at 2 - 5 fps in menus, has low framerate in-game, and crashes every 5 to 10 minutes.
  • I have Conan Exiles. Not DX12, but still UE4. Should probably give that a try and see how it goes…
  • Oblivion Remastered refuses to launch. Says my system doesn’t support DX12.
  • Nightingale also refuses to launch. Same error.
  • A couple of indie games still in development switched from UE4 to UE5 and now crash immediately after trying to launch.

Works just fine on everything else. My card is the Arc A770:

  • Can get a reasonably stable 40 fps with ultra settings (including ray tracing) in Cyberpunk 2077.
  • Helldivers 2 is great. Had to use launch commands to force DX11 at first, but after a few numbered updates to MESA that’s no longer a problem.
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 is great. Avoid the option to launch the game with Vulkan, though. It is really badly implemented and causes very obvious graphical glitches all the time.
  • I get a stable 50 fps on KCD 1 on ultra. Though I have only played it for three hours recently (started a new game).
  • Very smooth in Sins of a Solar Empire 2, except for truly massive fights (thanks to the large VRAM size my card actually does a better job at rendering large battles than some of my friends with more powerful cards).

For none game related stuff:

  • Great performance in Blender 3D, though it’s finnacky to set up and I think I still didn’t do it right (can’t get One API to work), but despite that it still performs fast in cycles.
MonkeyBrawler,

That gives me hope. Sounds like it’s just drivers they need to fix. I really just want something for transcoding, which it sounds like they’re great for that. Figure they’ll go up in price once the bugs are ironed out.

Thanks a ton for the detailed response.

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Little tip for transcoding:

Friend of mine in the Netherlands has a server at home with Jellyfin. He bought the weakest A series ARC card (forgot the exact model number), because he found out all the ARC cards use the exact same hardware for transcoding. Meaning there’d not be any performance difference between the lowest end card and the highest end card.

Check that info yourself, of course, but me and my group of friends have been using his Jellyfin for watch-parties and it’s been going great.

drmoose,

I’m on AMD 6600RX and mesa 24.x was unplayble and runs almost perfectly on 25 now. So have hope!

mrfriki, (edited ) do games w Man, I really slept on Days Gone (mini review)

I didn’t liked it when I played on PS4 and I quit a couple hours in, but a couple of years later I played it on PC and loved it, put around 70 hours in it. It’s a pity that we don’t get to see a sequel and I understand why, but it is still a very fun game.

alehel, do games w Steam Deck / Gaming News #11

Shame about Nightdive not getting permission to do Goldeneye. They’ve done great work in the past, and a remaster of Goldeneye would have been awesome to see.

Don’t be nervous, I love your posts, and I’m sure others do to 🙌.

peculiar_goat,

Yeah Goldeneye has a legit good campaign… would love to play it on PC with some modern convenience. The Perfect Dark decomp/port project is fantastic so maybe there’s hope for a Goldeneye port too regardless of what Nintendo says!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Add to this you’d have to (maybe?) factor in what Amazon would say, because they now own the James Bond I.P.?

Its tricky, but its a shame we never got a ‘pure’ Nightdive version!

Dr Mercer was advantageous to the Marker to have alive and doing his work, so he isn’t killed until his usefulness has run its course

Canonically: the markers try to influence people to do what will assist in Unification. Isaac vehemently doesn’t believe in Unitology so the marker throws enemies at him to try to stop him / manipulate him into doing what it wants (in DS2 & 3). Other people in the series are believers, so they don’t need to be killed off if they’re more useful alive for the time being

Survivors lasting by staying behind locked doors isn’t too unbelievable, either, given the fall of the Ishimura took a while (1 month from marker discovery to it getting on board the ship), and you arrive not that long after it falls (less than a week). It’s been at most a week since she went dark, I think, which is a believable timeframe to survive given the comms going black is at least a day before the big fall of the ship

Oh hey my memory was pretty close: Check the year 2508 section

Other games absolutely pull that shit too much, but DS did a pretty good job with background story details to explain why some people aren’t dead

Bezier,
@Bezier@suppo.fi avatar

Was going to say this myself, but you already did it better. Mercer didn’t survive the enemies, he was one of them.

Luffy879,

Well, but Isaak was believing that after he talked to Dr mercer, or am I wrong?

I mean, he brought the marker back to the planet, which should be what the marker wanted, so why were they still attacking him?

But also, from another perspective, they have set up this twist perfectly. I mean, first of all its pretty logical: everything all right --> marker removed --> everything going to shit, so everything all right <-- marker brought back <-- everything going to shit

This, the betrayal, and Dr mercer being one of the people studying the marker in the first place (and Isaak’s girlfriend actually being able to interact with things, and the necros attacking her) have really convinced me that bringing it back was the right thing to do, and the necros not attacking all of a sudden would have been way too obvious

Edit: Wait, is mercer the guy developing the invincible necromorphs, or is he the one helping you bring the marker?

gamermanh,

I mean, he brought the marker back to the planet, which should be what the marker wanted, so why were they still attacking him?

The marker wanted to stay off of Aegis VII, actually. Their entire goal (as we learn in 3) is to spread the Necro infection and eventually make a Brother Moon. It’s likely the marker kept attacking Isaac in an attempt to stop him from putting it back on the planet that was about to fall apart. Isaac’s mental infection isn’t hardcore until DS2, either, so he’s not being manipulated very hard yet

Dead Space gets fucking complicated if you read the extended lore in all the games holy shit I sound insane

Wait, is mercer the guy developing the invincible necromorphs, or is he the one helping you bring the marker?

Mercer is the guy making the invincible Necro. In the remake he kills himself willingly, in the original he’s “betrayed” by the marker. The guy helping you is June, poor bastard

I love my Anbernic. Such a cheap and convenient way to emulate old games.

davad, do games w (my first time here sorry) prison review and suggestions

I haven’t played in a few years so take this with a grain of salt.

My approach is to build things out incrementally. If your cashflow stays positive the entire time, you won’t have money problems.

For design, try to find modular chunks you can repeat. A cellblock with bathroom and showers. A canteen. Make blueprints from them and twist them.

Do you have a foundation and walls around the entire space? I usually kept most stuff outside with a fence around the perimeter.

Oisann,

i honestly just go with the flow like the plan comes in my head its not the best as you can tell but i try to keep it quite better looking this prison as you see i am trying to make it like a very hard prison to escape from but at the same time somewhat of a prison for reform its not the best looking as i said but i try my best

FeelzGoodMan420, do games w Useless rant about Witcher 3 romance

The whole triss vs yen thing was lazy fanservice added by CDPR. If you read the books, it’s clear Geralt is destined to be with Yen. The books make this abundantly clear. It also makes it crystal clear that Geralt thinks of Triss like a little sister, not romantically. There was absolutely no reason to have that in the book. It’s straight up stupid fanservice and made the game into kind of a meme in my opinion.

Lojcs,

I really don’t care about the book. If anything his relationship with Yen feels like pondering to the book audience without much of a setup or explanation in-game

FeelzGoodMan420,

I mean… The game has numerous book references. It expects you to have read then. Half the characters and references are from the books. So not sure why it’s the yen part that specifically bugs you :-)

Lojcs,

As far as I understand the games aren’t book cannon right? Then let the books not be game cannon. It is unreasonable for the books to be required reading between witcher 2 and 3 or even to expect the audience to know to read them.

A never before seen character from the books showing up in the game doesn’t bother me because they’re new and they’re explored as if they’re new characters. Yen bugs me because she’s a new character to me but as soon as they meet in Skelliga, her and Geralt get back together as if nothing has changed since the books. On the other hand Triss is an established character who has a history with Geralt that I know of, but now both are giving each other the cold shoulder without explanation.

In terms of Triss and Yen the books don’t give context to the status quo. They become the status quo.

FeelzGoodMan420,

The books are canon for the games, yes. The games are not canon. Idk what else to say. I played W2 and 3 originally without having read the books. It didn’t seem weird in W3 because W2 was spent looking for her the entire game. And it gave clues about their history. After having read the books W3 makes even more sense since I understood more about the characters. There is nothing unreasonable about how they did that game. The game is totally fine without having read the books. But I am telling you that it makes more sense if you did.

Lojcs,

W2 was spent looking for her the entire game

Witcher 2 was spent looking for Triss not Yennefer.

The books are canon for the games, yes

And I said maybe they shouldn’t be because warping the game story to fit the books is what I’m complaining about in the first place.

If you were fine with how w3 handled Yen before reading the books good for you. But it was not at all clear for me and that’s all I said. Sorry for being brash but it is obnoxious to then get comments preaching about how Yennefer is objectively right for Geralt and Triss is just fan service and the game itself favoring Yen would make sense if only I were to read the books

FeelzGoodMan420,

Huh? Witcher 2 was primarily focused on Geralt looking for Yennifer. Are you mixing up names?

Lojcs,

Witcher 2. The game. Assasins of kings. Letho captures Triss at the end of act 1 to get away and Geralt can recue her on act 3. Yennefer is only ever mentioned in name. Please look things up before condescending

FeelzGoodMan420, (edited )

Bruh yennefer is mentioned multiple times. You’re also looking for her. What I’m saying is not wrong. I’m gonna stop responding to you because you seem to clearly have no desire to engage in good faith conversation. I was not being condescending . You’re clearly looking to pick a fight. Goodbye.

chicken, do games w I want a law for PC games to be offered in physical versions again

If we’re wishing for things that probably won’t happen, how about a government agency for game preservation? Source code gets submitted before release, approval for sale is conditional on them being able to successfully build and deploy it. Then 20 years later it gets automatically published to the public domain. That way even online only games will end up being preserved.

Is there another meaning to “PSA” that isn’t “public service announcement”? It confuses me being in the title as this entire post is written as a suggestion / CTA, not a PSA.

Guessing it’s the sales tax? Most countries will price things with tax included, not add it on afterwards.

@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

The weird discount application and the sales taxes.

The sales tax always drove me nuts (and in total I loved in North America for a decade), I could never get it over it.

Where I live we just get an item list (with true cost per item) and a subtotal.

TommySoda, do gaming w Oblivion "remastered"

My favorite mod for Fallout 3 was the one that got rid of the awful “green” filter they slapped on it. You’d be amazed how much better the game looks. If this is how Oblivion Remastered looks I’ll wait for a similar mod to come out.

PanArab, do gaming w The steam deck is just great

I have both. So far the only advantage the Switch Lite has is that is lighter and pocketable. The Steam Deck is not just about gaming which it does so well, it has also become my main and only PC outside of work. I have it hocked up to my TV more often than use it in handheld mode.

Try Stellaris. It’s similar gameplay, but it’s realtime and the space battles you can get yourself into can be truly epic.

Denjin,

As someone who just spent the last 30 years in a huge galaxy spanning war to try and seize Terminal Egress from a 7 strong federation and then had a 10x Unbidden appear in Fen Habbanis that produced 85% of my alloys crippling my ability to fight them off for 20 years. I second this recommendation.
