DianaSt75, do gaming w What's the age cut off for socially acceptable gaming

I have wildly diverse hobbies, so I usually manage to mention something that people around me find weird. Gaming is one of them, and since I am not just your age but also female, I have received tons of strange comments over the years. At least my being somewhat fluid in English isn’t making me stand out anymore!

I think computer-related activities are seen different by our age group since we didn’t exactly grow up with it, or at least most of us didn’t. I know I was already a teenager when my parents bought us kids a computer, and that one needed inputs in BASIC and was textbased only. And while several of my classmates had similar experiences plus parents who insisted this was useful to know for our futures (and boy, where they right!), most of us still preferred to spent our time elsewhere. I see the difference in my kids, who grew up with not only computers and related technology, but also the internet. My son occasionally played board games via an internet platform by the time he was five (under supervision, of course), and as such, video games are much more part of daily life for that generation.

In my eyes, the decades-long discussion on when to give your child his/her first mobile phone has similar roots: We were used to a slower pace of life, that as a child you carry a few coins so that you can call your parents from a pay phone in an emergency, and otherwise you had to be at home at a specified time. Play dates with school mates were discussed in person at school, and so forth. Our children are dealing with far faster pace, discussion with class mates only occasionally take place eye-to-eye, and their schedules have become much more complex and fluid. Also, they grow up knowing everybody and anybody carries a phone in their pocket, and of course they want the same. Technology is integrated into their lifes from the start, and that means gaming is far more acceptable as a pastime.

TIN,

Very thoughtful response, thanks!

Battletech
Descent (first edition)
Mage Wars Arena
Battlestar Galactica
Food Chain Magnate
Scythe
Blood Bowl
Twilight Imperium (fourth edition)
War of the Ring (second edition)
Millenium Blades

Cosmic Encounter
Sidereal Confluence
Sekigahara
Triumph & Tragedy
Iron Ships & Wooden Men
Cloudspire
Forbidden Stars
Go

Twilight Imperium, really? I only played it once and it was the longest, most boring experience. Each turn just takes an enormous time, almost as long as a Warhammer 40k turn and I played with 5 other players. When you were done with your turn you could go for a really long walk and when you came back you wondered how the hell they just finished 2 turns...

I really really enjoy boardgames, but not ones that take a weekend to play...

(this isn't meant to insult you, I am just seriously wondering if my experience with it is a lot different than yours or if you like boardgames that you play an entire weekend)

EvaUnit02,
@EvaUnit02@kbin.social avatar

My group can get a game of 4th edition finished in four to five hours. We are seasoned players, though. Twilight Imperium is both a strategically and tactically rich 4X game, which is why it's one of my favorites.

That said, I am not opposed to long games. I recently played Fire in the Sky, which took me and my opponent 4 four-hour sessions to complete.

I look at it as no different than a campaign game such as Gloomhaven. Gloomhaven took my group two years to finish.

BentiGorlich,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Well with gloomhaven its multiple clearly seperated missions though.
My limit is at about 4-5h with a game that I've never played before. If I played the game before the limit is at about 3h I'd say 🤔

b42, do piracy w Fully understand if this is impossible, but is there any way to pirate/emulate switch games?

You definitely can! I'm using Yuzu on Linux with an jurassic 1050Ti and it works perfectly. I basically play Mario Kart 8 and BotW (for now, TotK in the queue) and never touched an actual Switch in person (seriously! I'm Brazilian and these things are hell expensive here).

will_iam90983402984,

yeah I get that, 300+ for something you’re using for maybe 2 games makes no sense

Gush,
@Gush@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t want to spend 400 and more just to play miitopia 😭

sombrero, do gaming w PC Games to play in local co-op?

I was a bit confused when you said local co-op. It implies 2 computers on the same local network(connected to the same router, no internet connection required). I think the term you’re looking for is split screen gaming.

When I looked at pictures of Spelunky games like Clonk and Liero popped into mind, I think there are options for split screen multiplayer in those games, they’re old school PvP games.

ono,

I was a bit confused when you said local co-op. It implies 2 computers on the same local network

My friends call that LAN play or LAN co-op. To me, local co-op has always been a more general phrase, covering all of the above.

@CAVOK Anonymous torrenting? Is this a fever dream?

Sharp312,
@Sharp312@lemmy.one avatar

Nope, and it’s awesome. I2P works similarly to tor except instead of being discouraged, there’s a torrent client built in. Only down side is as it’s an entirely P2P network with alot of hops (more than tor) it’s quite slow.

Stardew Valley is a really chill and fun game. You can talk to the towns people but don’t have to and the dialogue is all very short if you do.

@YourHeroes4Ghosts@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, I’ve played that game to death at this point, I’m afraid.

Tahssi,
@Tahssi@yiffit.net avatar

I’ll also add Urbek City Builder. It’s a city building game but it’s a more simplified one. Resource management is very easy and you can build your city as fast or as slow as you need.

Nobody’s gotten this yet unfortunately. Solution:

spoilerIts Prince of Persia The Sands of Time. Princess Farah, who you escort, always find a conventient crack only she can fit through whenever the game needed her gone. This got kind of memed.

GiuEliNo, do gaming w What are peoples thoughts on games requiring always online? How does it affect your enjoyment of those games?
@GiuEliNo@feddit.it avatar

I hate it I try to always avoid always online drm but sometimes it’s really impossible, i’m gonna be honest and say that i got some issue with my steamdeck for them. (f u ubisoft btw) So if i find that a singleplayer game needs an always online drm i just don’t buy it.

loops,

Same. I really loved the first two Diablos, but I wouldn’t touch the new one because of it. I’ll just wait a decade or so and emulate it.

Quentinp, do gaming w Whats a game that everybody seems to love that you cant stand for one reason or another?
@Quentinp@lemmy.ca avatar

Never into the 3d Metal Gear Solid games. Also most RTS; no matter how cool they look they just aren’t my cup of tea.

Auggie_Otter,

I like Metal Gear Solid a lot. Metal Gear Solid 2 was okay but the bait and switch from Solid Snake to Raiden was just aggravating and the plot started getting more crazy than I cared for. By the time Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater came out I was just done. I know I’m in the minority here but it just isn’t for me. The first Metal Gear Solid for the PS1 was about the right balance of game play and funky off the wall story for me.

Hideo Kojima needs someone to tell him when enough is enough.

GetsThruBuckner, do gaming w What are y'all's all time favourite game OSTs?
@GetsThruBuckner@lemmy.world avatar

Persona 5 Royal. Close 2nd is Nier: Automata. Both amazing OSTs

youknowthatthing,

P5R had an excellent soundtrack

BluePhoenix01,

My main wish after P5R soundtrack was released… is that I wish there was a definitive playlist of the order once both soundtracks are merged. As of right now, there is a set list for P5 and then a separate one for P5R…

Maybe I need to keep looking, or generate it myself (it’s harder than it seems though).

Check out J-music Ensemble’s Persona 5 cover album Metagroove! It’s really well made, I couldn’t go back to listening the vanilla soundtrack without thinking of it.

Red Dead Redemption 2. Everyone goes on about how awesome it is, but I just found the story and gameplay really slow and dull.

sjolsen,
@sjolsen@beehaw.org avatar

RDR2 suffers heavily from the same problem as GTAV’s single player mode: it’s a movie posing as a video game and both aspects suffer for it.

RDR2 would have been great if it was just the part where you wander around tracking critters and collecting flowers and playing cowboy dress-up, but the game really doesn’t want you to do that. Not to belabor the point, but between how unpredictable the connection between “interact with item/character X” and “start mission with character Y” can be and the game’s tendency to fail missions the second you go off-script, RDR2 often felt like it was directed by someone who actively resented the concept of player agency.

Kindajustlikewhat,

You articulated my issue with it perfectly. In theory it was this amazing open world with tons of player freedom, but the minute you engage with the actual story at all you have no choice in anything. There was one quest where I HAD to rescue Micah and kill a butt load of people which really annoyed me given I was going for a white hat run.

Stardew Valley. I don’t find it relaxing at all but a chore and stressful due to the day/night cycle. I feel like Terraria is handling day/night much better.

sydneybrokeit,

Yep. I love planting things, harvesting them… I want Stardew Valley without the time management stuff.

asqapro,

If you’re on PC, there’s mods to help with the time (even stopping it altogether). I haven’t tried them out myself, but this mod would solve the time management issue: www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/169

sydneybrokeit,

Yeah, I’ve tried those out before. It tends to make the game feel weird, if that makes sense? Like, everything is still expecting time to progress.

Really, I want a game like Stardew, but without the hard timeline baked in from the start.

laresek, do gaming w What’s everyone playing this weekend?

Tears of the Kingdom. I’m going to be here for awhile, but this game has made me want to play some other Switch games in my collection that I’ve been putting off, like Xenoblade Chronicles.

Xenoblade is awesome! It blew my mind that sooo many really outstanding Switch games were in fact done by the same company!
