Like many open source games, it has that distinctly ‘alpha’ feel to it right now, but I do enjoy NodeCore on occasion. It’s a zen minimalist block game with a unique diagetic crafting system. Instead of a traditional “recipe book” or “crafting grid”, you produce new materials through in-world transformations. For instance, to make glass, you have to surround sand with fire, and to control fire, you basically want to build a deliberately-shaped dirt or stone pit… the whole thing feels a little like minecraft and a little like a sand physics sim or cellular automata.

popcar2,

Pretty interesting, reminds me of Vintage Story. Thanks for sharing.

Helium Rain launched a few years ago as a commercial game with an open source launcher (BSD-3), and as of a few weeks ago the game became free on Steam. The developer is no longer maintaining it, but there’s still a small community that are interested in it.

Pixel Dungeon, or its more updated and popular fork, Shattered Pixel Dungeon.

Randomized Dungeon Crawler.

Available on PC and Android (at least)

klay, do games w Game wikis just aren't as popular anymore?

I think part of the problem is just that there are a lot more good games that people know about! Unfortunately one of the tradeoffs for all the riches of heaven is that it’s a lot harder to cover them all.

Xonotic is the only one I’ve played out of all the games in this post. Only tried it for a couple hours, but it was fun.

Zero-K. It’s a competitive online RTS loosely based on the classic Total Annihilation (which led to Planetary Annihilation and Supreme Commander). Some of its features are a bit overcomplicated, but it does an amazing job innovating within the RTS genre.

It’s fast, aggressive, and fun. You spam units, claim territory (in the form of metal-extractors and energy-grid that upgrades their output, and building defenses to protect that) and raid and assault your opponents.

It abandons the hoary old concept of factions, instead giving you your choice of starting factories… and as the game progresses, you can expand into other factories to access the synergy of units. So you start a battle with a narrow slice of the unit-pie, but ultimately can access the whole inventory in a single match. There is no “teching” really, besides constructing resource-buildings, which keeps the focus on resources, construction, and combat.

It has a full single-player campaign that introduces the game’s complexity bit-by-bit… but the campaign does have some difficulty spikes, particularly since the units do get rebalanced once in a while and so an old mission will become suddenly easier or harder as the developers patch the game.

The game has a Lua-based GUI plug-in architecture if you like WoW-style UI mods as well.

Not all are open source, but a fair chunk are. All games on the list are free or one time payments.

taco_ballerina,

I play this game at least a couple times a week. It’s an all-time favorite!

Final Fantasy IX Remaster

  • I’ve never finished FF9 on PS1 (my optical drive died), then I got distracted playing FF9 remaster a few years earlier. Finally decided to stream the game with a guide
  • The battle is slow, even with fast forward, the animation seems to be slower than FF8 or FF7
  • The fast forward in this remaster is not implemented as good as FF8 remaster’s.
    • It’s only either 1x or 4x speed
    • If you started the fast forward and forgot to turn it off before a cutscene, then the cutscene will play at 4x without any way to reset the speed.
  • Despite all that, I am enjoying the game, characters are likable. I’m currently at Disc 2, after the Clerya section

Resident Evil Remake

  • Again, I’m following a guide to get unlimited rocket launcher. I really dislike that 3 hour time limit. Or maybe I just really dislike time limit in games.
  • I’m not into survival horror, but I enjoy the shooting / action part of Resident Evil
  • So far, not enjoying it, since I’m just kiting zombies, skipping cutscenes, etc. My aim is to get unlimited ammo, then finally play both Chris and Jill sections without the ammo, and in some ways, inventory constraints.
nutbutter, do piracy w Youtube - like apps like piped.video, but as Android app?

I am amazed why no one has said Clipious.

It uses Invidious instances, and if you enable the proxy option, Google won’t even get to know your IP address, which is not the case with apps like LibreTube and NewPipe.

gunpachi, (edited ) do piracy w Youtube - like apps like piped.video, but as Android app?

Libretube is what you are looking for. It uses piped api. It’s also available on F-droid.

Newpipe or Newpipe X Sponsorblock is also a good option.

Blizzard,

Newpipe X Sponsorblock

Wow, this is great. Are there any downsides of using this vs using regular NewPipe? Like updates delays etc.?

Quereller,
@Quereller@lemmy.one avatar

Delay is usually 1-2 days. You can have both installed in parallel.

Leax, do gaming w Anybody else in love with the base-control gameplay loop of the middle Far Cry games?

A good post reminding me why I love Far Cry games! I got bored playing FarCry 5, but had lot of fun on FarCry 6. Unfortunately the bases were a bit too easy in that game…

bermuda,

I heard Far Cry 6 changed a lot which is why I’ve been hesitant to give it a shot.

Leax,

I think you should! I loved coming back to a tropical island, with the Cuban inspiration.

transientDCer,

I enjoyed 3-5 and also really enjoyed 6, I think you might like it.

Mostly waiting for Lies Of P to land in a day or two. I have spent more time with Starfield, but as I mentioned in a previous comment, I think I’m reaching the end of my time with that one.

I don’t think it’s ‘bad’, but I do think it’s a severely compromised game that underwhelms more than it should for a game of it’s budget and the team behind it. There’s moments where you can see so much potential but it is always somewhat hidden by this mid 2000s design that I thought we’d moved past.
