ZephyrXero,

Japan has laws that say executives must take a pay cut before they can lay anyone off

ZephyrXero,

This won’t affect FF 17, but it could mean for a return to turn based with FF 18. Because FF 17 is probably already half way through development and these massive games are too large to make such a major change this late in the dev cycle

10 incredible PC games that never got console ports—until Steam Deck happened angielski

Here’s the thing most people still miss about the Steam Deck—and I’m saying this as someone who’s been yelling about it since forever—is that for decades, the PC had countless exclusive games that never set foot on a console. No ports, no Nintendo love, no Sony handshake—nothing....

ZephyrXero,

Still not ported to a console. SteamDeck gives you a console-like experience, but it is not a console

ZephyrXero,

The key ingredient that separates PC from console is you can deploy code custom optimized for the fixed platform hardware. This is why you have to go up a tier in GPU to have an experience on par with what a console would have because it’s running generisized code.

ZephyrXero,

30+ years of studying game and software development lol

ZephyrXero,

And you’re clearly a troll. Goodbye

Looking to get into Sonic games angielski

Not having played any games related to the Sonic franchise before, I picked up The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog and played through it in one sitting after having read about it in a post here on Lemmy. Safe to say, I absolutely loved every second of it. The art style, the characters and their dynamics, the murder mystery setting...

Sonic 2 for the Genesis is my favorite game of all time. So I’d suggest starting with that one, personally. First Sonic was good too, but the second game refined the controls and made some small quality of life improvements. Then Sonic 3 + Knuckles and Sonic Mania are also excellent.

The 3D Sonics have been pretty hit or miss though. The controls are dumbed down and not nearly as tight as the classic 2D ones, although Frontiers was a step in the right direction.

ZephyrXero,

Yeah only way to get the original soundtrack is via emulator or an actual cartridge. I think it only pertains to Sonic 3 though. I don’t think part 2 (Sonic & Knuckles) had the same issues

ZephyrXero,

Style and aesthetic only go so far. The low poly counts and blurry textures will still drag it down for anyone not already enamoured with legacy 3D graphics.

Pixel art games seem to have much more longevity than early 3D

ZephyrXero,

I’m fine with the concept of upscaling tech. DLSS 4 with the transformer model looks excellent. And FSR 4 is looking pretty damn decent as well. The earlier attempts weren’t as good. Ideally it would be acting more like DLAA, but 8.3 million pixels is a lot to render (4K). And if 8K is going to be a thing one day, it makes even more sense there.

I think too many people focus on the now and can’t imagine what things will be in the future as they progress.

Now frame generation, that one I feel less optimistic about. Especially when I see people using it for 60fps or less. It should really only ever be used at 80fps or higher, where the lag is less of a problem. But one day inferred frames, where it only looks at the prior frames and does not wait for the next frame, might make it a better experience.

Lastly, it’s NVidia and AMD’s marketing departments fault for having them all conflated. DLFG & FFG is what the frame gen tools should have been called, rather than shoehorning them under their super sampling and super resolution branding.

Your all-time favorite game? Let's discuss the best options! angielski

I feel like my “all-time favorite” changes depending on my mood, but if I had to pick just one, I’d probably go with The Witcher 3. That game just hit all the right notes—amazing story, incredible world-building, and so much stuff to do without feeling like pointless filler. Plus, the expansions were just as good, if not...

ZephyrXero,

My all-time favorites have been in place for many years now.

It’s a tie between Sonic 2 (Genesis) & Final Fantasy 6 (SNES).

They are two very different games that represent two different concepts in gaming. For Sonic it’s all about smooth, fun gameplay. With FF6 it’s all about the story and the experience of controlling an ensemble cast of characters. I can beat the first in under an hour, as while the latter usually takes 60+ hours. They’re like the yin and yang of videogames for me.

ZephyrXero,

So…bad frame rates all around? 😓

Are modern Final Fantasy games bad?

I started at 7 and looked forwards to every iteration of the series since then, 8 was more of the same with a weird story, 9 was cute and a good throwback, then I went back to 6 which was a masterpiece, 10 was emotional and beautiful, 12 wasn’t great but had cool worldbuilding, being a FFT fan....

ZephyrXero,

He’s probably referencing the tech we already saw a few years back where the game would render incredibly simple untextured geometry, then the gen AI reskins it to look like a realistic video.

Or maybe someone’s convinced him we’ll make whole games out of Gaussian Splats

ZephyrXero,

And yet still no official support for PS5 Pro smh

ZephyrXero,

4 of those are remakes. And Fantasian came out in 2021, it’s just now getting ported to other platforms.

Also Metaphor is only half-turn based, you only directly control one character.

Like a Dragon is the only one I would actually count in such an argument

ZephyrXero,

Easily the best game I’ve played all year 💙

ZephyrXero,

I’m still not happy they’ve brought him back to life…smh

Tune in tomorrow for a PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation hosted by Mark Cerny (blog.playstation.com) angielski

Rumors have it this event will announce the PS5 Pro. I know the PS5 has been out for years now but does anyone feel like a pro version might be unnecessary? Current gen games already look great and run fine*...

ZephyrXero,

PS5 came out in 2020, PS6 is expected in 2028 or ’29. We’re right at the half way point. Seems about just right really

ZephyrXero,

Well, I mention that type of psuedo console device within the video. But I think it’s going to be a third option.

But yes, if Valve came out with their own full fledged console, the Xbox would have a big problem. And it’s the operating system they fear the most. If SteamOS picks up traction beyond just the SteamDeck, Windows is in trouble

ZephyrXero,

Did an AI write this? Completely mixing up history and the present in the same sentence

Developed well over two decades ago, the original Silent Hill 2 is the magnum opus of Polish horror stalwarts Bloober Team. Running on then-innovative “Unreal Engine 5” technology created by Jazz Jackrabbit publishers Epic MegaGames, it’s a wonderful abyss of a game that remains perfectly playable today,

ZephyrXero,

This is a news article, not an art project. Really poor decision for the writer

ZephyrXero,

Oh yeah, a patent isn’t definitive proof of anything. The housing could potentially be different, but the pin out would be pretty well defined here. I’m inferring a lot on this one

ZephyrXero, (edited )

Huh, I was not aware some GC Color games would do that. Never had one, always thought of the Color as the first Pro model rather than its own generation.

ZephyrXero,

What’s click bait about it? The whole thing is about the words you were presented with. Click bait is tricking you with something other than it said it was going to be

ZephyrXero,

“content of dubious value or interest”. So no. This is not click bait.

I care deeply about the topic and put a lot of effort into this video. If you’re not interested, that’s not the same

ZephyrXero,

Well I can’t fit a whole paragraph into a title. “This” is multiple things. It you want to know what “this” is, you’ll have to watch it. If you don’t care, then simply don’t click it

ZephyrXero,

I don’t know if this can really be called “HD-2D”. This seems more like “2.5D” with the amount of 3D graphics in use

ZephyrXero,

…but it does look pretty nice

ZephyrXero,

PAX is probably the closest thing we have left in the US

ZephyrXero,

A few, but you’re going to see a flood of UE5 games soon

ZephyrXero,

I used to have Chao fights with my friend at lunch in high school. The VMUs totally worked

ZephyrXero,

You could also make your Chao fight each other, kinda like a Pokemon battle. Required two VMUs hooked together

ZephyrXero,

I truly believe there were only 2 factors that mattered in its death. First and foremost was the massive amount of debt the failure of the Saturn had left Sega already trying to recover from. If they hadn’t had that to worry about it would have been financially successful as it stood.

The second factor was more insidious. Sony did such a good job hyping up the PS2 that people really believed it would be way more powerful than the DC. Yet the DC could produce better graphics than the PS2 at launch. But that’s not what the public perception was. I worked at Electronic’s Boutique during the PS2’s launch, and no matter how much I tried it was impossible to diffuse the hype around it when I would try to convince people there was no need to wait and they should get a Dreamcast today rather than waiting for the PS2. But it was a lost cause most of the time. And ultimately those people are better off with how things eventually played out

ZephyrXero,
ZephyrXero,

It’s because the US doesn’t have anti-monopoly laws. We have laws that you can’t abuse your monopoly powers. And in this case, it was easier to prove against Google.

But it’s still bullshit. Vertical Integration is just a vertical monopoly

ZephyrXero,

I worked at Electronics Boutique over 20 years ago, and we’d do the same thing. If someone brought a game back and got a refund because they didn’t like it, or they got it for the wrong platform we’d just re-shrink wrap it and put it back out as new. But the lazy person who did yours didn’t even break out the heat gun smh

Also, I’m not sure if GameStop even allows this, but back in the day employees were allowed to borrow almost any game in the store to try it out, so we could know about it when selling. And we’d re-shrink those too

ZephyrXero,

Standard practice at game stores for over 20 years. They do this to prevent theft. Before this policy got instituted we’d have angry people showing up with empty cases because someone slipped it out of the box and then out of the store

ZephyrXero,

I wonder if this is a sign the rumored “Deckard” stand-alone VR device is getting announced soon…

ZephyrXero,

I bought BotW right when it came out and I’m still not all that much further than you. I’ve come back to it multiple times, but just can’t get into it. I had trouble with the freezing area too. Took me an hour before I finally stumbled across a solution. I’ve gotten a bit further than you, and it just keeps getting more and more over complicated as you go.

I just don’t think the game is fun, personally. But I also don’t think Skyrim is fun. I’m not really into most open world games. I wish they would make us a new one more in the style of Ocarina and Twilight Princess, but it seems like we’re in the minority

ZephyrXero,

I wonder if the codename implies you will be jumping and bouncing around a lot in the game

ZephyrXero,

Oh did they change that too? I was just going off the “capped at 4%” part. Before you only had to exceed $200k to have to start paying

Alleged GTA 6 Videos & Source Code Leaked; Schreier: It's Real (wccftech.com) angielski

Grand Theft Auto 6 has yet to be announced, but last year, we managed to get a glimpse at the sixth main entry in the series by Rockstar Games thanks to some leaked videos. While there's been nothing since, official or otherwise, some dedicated fans have provided something new on the highly anticipated game this week....

ZephyrXero, (edited )

You linked to a Google doc, and I appreciate that. But there are no vids in that WCCF link

ZephyrXero,

Polygon actually did link to some vids in their article. But they look to have been taken down
