I’m in the UK, so some of this might be UK centric:

Podcasts

  • Digital Foundry Weekly, Weekly podcast discussing gaming news/hardware etc (If you know DF you know what this is)
  • The Crate and Crowbar, PCGamerUK used to have a podcast and these guys move to this. Few friends talking about games and it’s decent (not overly technical or in depth, more just mates chatting).
  • IGN UK Podcast, absolutely love the personalities on this, it seems more like some mates chatting with a bit of structure (less like the IGN ethos of pushing as much out as possible).
  • VGC, Again a few mates chatting about games, good production values and I value their opinions.

RSS feeds

  • Eurogamer.net features, similar to DF, but they cover decent articles about games.
  • Uppercut - Features, doesn’t post often but has well thought out articles about games and they’re a joy to read.
  • Polygon - Feature, interesting articles about films/games. I don’t read them all just ones interesting or relevant to me.
  • Rock Paper Shotgun features, PC Gaming articles that explores interesting questions about newer/popular games.
  • IGN Feed, All the feeds above are features where it’s not just regurgitated news that spams your feed, they’re well thought out. Well IGN isn’t features, it’s just gaming news. I hardly read the artcles, just scroll the titles.
Conningemu,

A bit related but do you like using RSS? I've never used it before because it never seemed like it was worth setting up. Do you recommend it/ is it worth it?

giant_smeeg,

Yes I love it.

Pick all your favourite news/content/podcasts/youtube and set them up in an RSS app.

Then it’s all in one place, no visiting multiple apps/websites. It’s just there ready to go. You can then easily keep track of what you’ve read, haven’t read and saved.

peasinspace,

first off, beautiful formatting! Jeff Grubb of current Giant Bomb has Andy Robinson from VGC on his morning show pretty frequently, I enjoy him. I do catch DF content and pods time to time as well.

I’ve never set up an RSS feed but might look into it, something to scroll on the can/ when i have a few mins of downtime would be nice. google’s served articles arent cutting it. Left the thing that previously filled this gap behind a few months ago.

giant_smeeg,

Definitely setup RSS. Can just keep everything in one place. Lemmy, YouTube and Mastodon also support RSS feeds

Nextlander - giant bomb made better imo.

There’s never been a better podcast! (I fell off them at first, but I think that was because the world sucked quite a bit right around when they started, and it leaked into their podcast. They’re pretty great now.)

I stuck with Giant Bomb right up until they canned Jeff Gerstmann. Quickly after that, Giant Bomb just felt icky. That said, I couldn’t hang with Jeff’s solo gig – while he’s still a threat, he sorely needs a co-host(s).

peasinspace, (edited )

I got into GB a bit after when Gertsmann got canned because i enjoyed Grubb and his takes/personality so much. I realize when an outfit has been going for a while like they have a regime change/ almost total personnel change would feel weird af

peasinspace,

now do u say this about current GB or their more well known previous iterations? ive only been into them since their main hosts/people being Jan, Grubb, Bakalar and Ryckert. Tam and Lucy from gamespot are frequent collaborators along with Mike Minotti.

if you’re not familiar with their current crew i suggest giving em another look, they crack me up and bring a ton of personality to the table.

From what I know, nextlander is former GB people. I’ll definitely check it out, i have lots of drive/work/gaming time to consume pods

RxBrad,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

When I bailed right after JeffG left, there were personalities I liked, and some I did not.

Also, since it was a complete dice roll who’d actually be on a given podcast: some were great; some not so much.

And more often than not, their podcasts were populated by randos not even on the crew.

GOG. I don’t like steam so I try to avoid it where there’s not a large price difference.

theangriestbird, do gaming w Communities similar to r/dragonage?

You could check out lemmy.world/c/dragonage? Obviously it’s a bit dead at the moment, but this is the thing: all of these little communities need to be restarted from scratch, and to do that you need to contribute your own content until enough people show up that the feed starts rolling on its own. Lemmy.world is currently the biggest instance, and that community has 102 subs already. Seems like a great place to start if you want to recreate r/dragonage on lemmy.

kat,
@kat@feddit.de avatar

For some reason I did not find this community before. I will try to contribute there. Thank you!

If you’re interested in Mass Effect, please also visit !masseffect. It’s also a bit dead, but we’re trying!

Edit: There’s also the much bigger !masseffect, which I somehow missed.

kat,
@kat@feddit.de avatar

Will do!

Ashtear,

Since we’re dealing with very small niches still, I also recommend participating in genre communities. I’m not really seeing an active one for RPGs but something like Dragon Age would get some run on !pcgaming and !pcgaming (with the usual caveat that kbin currently isn’t always great about getting all their content out to federated instances).

Grow the genre/archetype communities enough and eventually they will naturally break out into individual property niches for sure.

kat,

Fair point, although !baldurs_gate_3 seems to go fairly well, but the fact that it’s a recent game is probably helping.

Steam, because I would want to support the company that respects linux users.

GOG also offers Linux versions of any games that have such a version.

racketlauncher831,

You’re right, but I think OP meant almost all the games that are developed by Valve have a Linux version, meanwhile non of the games developed by CDPR has it.

Steam, because Valve guarantees to keep games playable even if they go out of business. Aaand I keep forgetting that GOG exists xD

uninvitedguest, do gaming w If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?
@uninvitedguest@lemmy.ca avatar

Steam for a few reasons:

  1. Ease of use with the Steam deck
  2. Prices are often cheaper, albeit often through sites like Fanatical/ Humble
  3. Synergizes with my only subscription, Humble Choice
  4. There is a lot of content missing from games on GOG compared to Steam. Most of it is trivial, but sometimes it is substantial. It has created a rhetoric about GOG customers being treated as second class citizens. Google Sheets

I used to try to buy my games at GOG where there wasn’t a significant financial difference. I liked what they were doing, especially with GOG Galaxy at the time. The pendulum swung back to Steam over time, and now I’m just not buying games any more.

DreamySweet, (edited ) do gaming w If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?

GOG because it’s more convenient and less ableist.

Steam’s colour scheme makes it difficult to read and causes eye strain and headaches for people with astigmatism, like me. The way the light text bleeds into the darkness surrounding it makes it difficult to read anything so I can’t be sure of the price that I’m paying without copy/pasting it into notepad or something. When I made a thread pointing this out years ago, when they disabled the old theme system, Valve’s mods banned me from the forum and deleted my thread.

I sent an email to Epic Games about the same problem in their store and got a response that could be summarized as “Don’t care, go fuck yourself.” so they are not a good option either. I don’t like gambling so I won’t use EA’s virtual casino, and I want to keep the games I buy so Ubisoft’s store is also not an option.

It’s GOG or piracy for me.

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ve never had any issues with headaches, have you talked to your doctor about maybe getting a blue light filter added to your prescription? Also, you can pick a different theme for Steam as well. I’m a big fan of Metro.

DreamySweet,
@DreamySweet@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s not blue light. It’s blurriness caused by the white of the text bleeding into the black. Straining my eyes to read it causes headaches. I can use light mode things with no problems.

Steam skins don’t reskin most of the client anymore. I used to use a light skin similar to Metro when Steam still properly supported it.

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

OK, in that case I would see about getting a new eye doctor, if you can. If they were doing their job right, they should have made sure the prescription you got corrected the astigmatism. My doctor worked with me to get it perfectly right, so I don’t have any issues anymore with small text, including on Steam.

If you or someone else who reads this can’t afford to get glasses, there is help available. If you’re in the US, check out New Eyes, which works with those who can’t afford to have their vision corrected.

DreamySweet,
@DreamySweet@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I have glasses. This isn’t something that they can correct for me. Glasses don’t fix the shape of your eyes. Maybe this can help explain what it’s like? It’s about conferences but it’s the same for anything with that colour scheme. The smaller the text, the worse it gets.

Dark mode is not good for everyone.

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No, glasses don’t fix the shape of your eye, but they do correct for that uneven shape. I would know, because they’ve corrected my vision and it’s now crystal clear after being blurry from astigmatism for years. It sounds to me like your prescription just isn’t quite right, because you shouldn’t have any issues if they had nailed it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not dismissing that you have a problem, and I’m not defending Steam or saying they shouldn’t have more accessible options for those with sight issues. What I’m saying is it really sounds like your glasses aren’t where they need to be, and that’s why you’re having issues. With the tech they use to make lenses these days, you should definitely be able to dial in a prescription to get perfectly clear vision with astigmatism.

DreamySweet,
@DreamySweet@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Glasses don’t correct this issue when the problem is bad enough.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Steam’s colour scheme makes it difficult to read and causes eye strain and headaches for people with astigmatism, like me.

The Steam Store is just a website where a user style such as uso.kkx.one/style/219929 can be applied like any other. Game prices are just black on white using that theme:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/13891b37-7681-4137-98d2-250821f89c97.png

The Steam Client itself is largely or perhaps even fully controllable via command line (…valvesoftware.com/…/Command_line_options#Steam) and you can set any color scheme to your terminal as you like:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7e9827e0-734b-401a-9b7b-f01c73c7f45c.png

The Steam Client also supports skins since forever: steamcustomizer.com

Steam may not have color schemes for all kinds of visual impairments and that’s a legitimate criticism but Steam has a bag full of aforementioned features for customization, so with a little bit of research (I was curious about that myself, so I spent like 5 to 10 minutes) I found quite easy workarounds. As someone who does not like to be blasted in the face with light themes, I look for similar workarounds all the time.

DreamySweet,
@DreamySweet@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That works for a browser but I would still need the client to install, uninstall, and manage game settings. Steam skins only work for a few areas of the client. Most of it will still be unreadable.
