It’s a pretty decent game, I still don’t understand why everyone was so down on it. I had a lot of fun playing it, there was decent variety, the gunplay was good, and the silly storylines were entertaining.

GammaGames,

My buddy even produced a 60second live action ad for them that got axed over the “drama”. People act like all the other games were masterpieces somehow. I’d still also love to see a remaster of the first two games but that’s neither here nor there.

The frequent complaints I heard (which I double checked just now against Open Critic) were monotony, uninteresting story and characters, and enough bugs to be annoying.

Mugmoor,
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Because the series hasn’t done anything new since Saints Row 3. It’s just the same game over and over again, and even that was just a more polished version of Crackdown.

@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

I'm not sure what you mean. Saints Row 4's large criticism was that it was too different from SR's heritage what with being a super hero game instead of GTA on crack. Past that Gat out of Hell isn't a mainline title and was even further out there, and then Agents of Mayhem wasn't even a Saints game, and I enjoyed the hell out of that game's unique merits.

The SR reboot was the first real Saints Row release since 3, so you could say that it didn't do enough different (which I can't speak for, I didn't play it), but saying the series hasn't done anything new since 3 is not correct. Whether those games were super great or not is a different discussion, but they were doing something different, unless you just didn't specify between something different for the series or something different from all other video games.

HawlSera,

I loved Agents of Mayhem. Best GI Joe game ever released

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

It had flaws, but I found the three hero swapping mechanic pretty fun, especially due to each one having a class that made them better or worse against certain enemies, and I loved the whole triple jumping thing, combat felt unique and fun.

The rest of the game has a lot of not so awesome bits, but I found it absolutely good enough to warrant an improved sequel. Hopefully they do something with it one day.

HawlSera,

I’ve heard it was because it was a tame, out of touch, white washed version of a series that used to be edgier…

Haven’t played it so I don’t know how true that is.

SenorBolsa, (edited )
@SenorBolsa@beehaw.org avatar

It’s just different, I don’t know as I’ve gotten older the “edginess” of the older titles doesn’t really hit with me anyways so I didn’t miss it at all and I felt it was replaced with a more modern take on the idea. They did some really fun stuff with it, for example there’s a set of missions where you go LARPing all over the map with dart guns in a kind of weird mix of mad max and high fantasy. I didn’t like the characters in the crew at first either but they grow on you I don’t think the gang in the other games was any less corny or goofy these ones are just more modern takes.

I think edginess had it’s time, but it’s old hat now. It still feels every bit a madcap gang adventure a Saints game should be. I wouldn’t spend $60 on it, but for $20 it’s a winner all day if you just want a dumb fun game. There’s plenty to do and plenty of actually new gameplay changing things to discover and unlock. Clearing out gangs feels a bit repetitive, but not much different from something like Far Cry 3/4/5/6

Maybe it’s not your thing, and I think it’s probably fair to level the critique that it’s not what the hardcore fans really wanted, but I don’t think the game fails to deliver a good experience overall especially now that it’s all bugfixed etc. (which it was shortly after launch but still that launch sucked a little)

I still laugh at the one-liners the PC gives after the boss fights. I fuckin’ loved that about the first one. You’re a silent protagonist, except during these random awkward moments after defeating a boss and then you just deliver the dumbest puns and jokes unexpectedly.

TauriWarrior,

Might have had fun playing it if we didn’t have to try the same mission 5+ times because the vehicle we were meant to steal didn’t spawn in, if when i go to an area to kill the rival gang there its empty. Person i was trying to play with couldn’t get the fast travel points which was a bug as i tried to get it for them by using their computer and couldn’t but on mine i could. Things like that meant we lost interest very quick

narc0tic_bird, do piracy w Is anyone concer about denuvo on switch?

Detecting that the game runs on an emulator should be rather trivial I imagine.

In theory, it’s also rather trivial to remove these checks from the game binaries (if you have the knowledge, but enough people have).

What Denuvo does is it not only implements these checks very effectively, but it also modifies/obfuscates/encrypts the game binary/code in a lot of ways. I honestly don’t know a lot about how it works, but this deep integration makes it very hard to remove.

There are two ways you’d circumvent Denuvo DRM. Either by emulating all checks and whatever Denuvo wants in order to verify the game copy is “legit”, or to completely remove Denuvo from the game binary. Both have proven to be very hard and a lot of work. There are likely only very few people out there with the expertise to do it, and of these people, most of them probably work for Denuvo (most people understandably prefer getting money for what they are doing as opposed to street cred), and most others don’t bother.

There’s one known cracker who calls herself “EMPRESS”, but even she doesn’t crack nowhere near all Denuvo games, as it’s simply too time consuming.

Some people assume that the Switch version of Denuvo will be less powerful, but I honestly doubt it’s that much less effective. I don’t think Denuvo would announce Switch availability if they’d think it wouldn’t be effective, they have a lot of high-paying customers to lose (or not to gain).

It’s always a battle between DRM companies and the cracking scene, but with Denuvo it has been a steep uphill battle so far.

joneskind, do gaming w Shoddy PC ports aside, 2023 has already been an amazing year for gaming.

Being a Mac user, this year is indeed a good year.

I’ve been a very longtime WoW player but couldn’t stand the game anymore. I dropped it after a few months of Classic WOTLK (my personal fav) both out of boredom and because Blizzard contempt for macOS users

Finding a game that I love and runs natively wasn’t easy but it finally happened. I never was an hardcore gamer (except maybe in the early days of WoW) so I never felt the need to get a dedicated PC (I had a PC but it only ran macOS and Manjaro)

I’m currently playing Metro Exodus and BG3 (which I absolutely love even in EA). I also bought REV, NMS and Cliff Empire, but they weren’t for me.

The other game changer is Game Porting ToolKit which allows me to test a whole bunch of Windows only games thanks to a friend who added me to its Steam family.

Most of the games run smoothly enough for me (60FPS) so I guess the times I was thinking about buying a gaming rig are over. This money will go in some overpriced Mac option.

Anyway, I never spent that much money in video games. It definitely must be a sign.

WestwardWind,

Which Mac are you running on? I haven’t gone through the game porting kit setup yet because it seemed like a real pain in the ass and I want confident the performance would be worth it in the end on my m2pro

joneskind,

I got a 30 GPU cores M2 Max running the Public Beta of macOS Sonoma.

I just installed Whisky and followed the guide.

After that I just created a bottle and run Steam.exe which I then use as an installer and launcher. Super easy to use.

Not every game is working OOTB yet, but I guess it’s a matter of updates. I didn’t dig too much for that reason.

One weird thing I noticed is that CyberPunk is capped at about 30 FPS, no matter the settings.

i use these guys: https[://]my.tvaster[.]com the yearly subscription is very cheap. i have it on a s905x4 box running coreelec and i can watch all the big games with no problems and very little delay - compared to other services. i will sometimes use a vpn due to my isp being known for using traffic shaping

CheekyYoghurts,

This provider seems to only offer mainland European channels. They also don’t provide a channel list which is very weird and somewhat suspicious. I was interested but need to know more before I pull the trigger. The site offers virtually no real information

the older stuff on newsdemon is hit or miss anyways cause of the way they handle their storage so it will be hard to know if its gone cause they suck or gone cause of takedown.

omalaul,

Overall not too happy with the performance but wanted a provider that accepted crypto

thisusernameistaken,

i can understand that about crypto. Fwiw, this discussion was posted recently about usenet and crypto, lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/2612428 Others take crypto and several of the ones mentioned take it directly without a processor and have better perf. than the newsdemon system.

squid, do piracy w Is anyone concer about denuvo on switch?

its just another layer of security that will be broken

totallynotfbi, do piracy w Is anyone concer about denuvo on switch?

Personally, I think that the Denuvo protection on Switch games would probably be a simpler system than the full-fat PC DRM. It would probably be too intense for the Switch’s meagre processing power, and customers are definitely going to be annoyed when their game takes a minute or two to load up.

Could it pave the way for that crap on other consoles as well?

At this moment, the only current-gen console to be jailbroken is the Nintendo Switch. There’s no need for external DRM on the PS5 and Xbox because publishers can trust that users will only be able to play legit copies of games. Switch games, on the other hand, don’t have that guarantee, because dumping games on a jailbroken switch is very easy to do. Hence why Irdeto is planning to offer DRM for the Switch only.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that third-party DRM was used on a Nintendo console. Some DS and Wii games were protected by an anti-piracy system called MetaFortress, which aimed to protect against flashcarts and pirated copies. Here’s a video from the Dolphin emulator team about its use in the all-time classic, “The Smurfs: Dance Party”

moody,

Their goal is to prevent emulation. I don’t know how effective it would be at stopping on-console piracy.

Vilian,

but can’t emulation emulate the denuvo?

riquisimo,

Denuvo phones home constantly. Unless denuvo is removed from the game, the game won’t be playable unless it was legitimately purchased and can be verified on denuvo’s servers.

Furthermore denuvo encrypts the game files and the denuvo files and scrambles them all together, like mixing two jars of sand from different beaches, but the denuvo sand pieces know where everything is, so the game and copy protections still work.

So it’s hard to remove.

Oha,

Best explanation ive ever read. thanks

maxprime,

I wonder if an emulator that breaks DRM could be considered illegal. I would imagine that emu teams would tread carefully around this sort of thing to avoid litigation.

Moonrise2473, do piracy w Is anyone concer about denuvo on switch?

On the bright side it will eventually make emulators more accurate

tiwenty,

I’m curious, how so?

moody,

Emulators typically cut a lot of corners to make emulation faster rather than make it more accurate. A truly accurate emulator would be impossible for the software to differentiate from the actual hardware.

Vilian,

but it gonna run slow as shit

Ok i see, thank you!

Note that 100% accuracy on emulators is not always a goal. Super accurate emulators might take more computation/emulation and run slower.
