Kenshi and Rimworld, with tons of mods its like adding different spices to the same yummy dish ☺️

spriteblood,

I've had Kenshi on my wishlist for a long time, and I haven't pulled the trigger. What's your favorite part about it? Most of what I know is that it's punishing and has deep roleplaying opportunities, but I don't know a lot of the specifics.

Lurra,
@Lurra@lemm.ee avatar

I love that its brutal when you start out. Everything can kill you. From bandits, to creatures, hell even certain regions are hazardous. First time playing and exploring the biomes I was walking on egg shells constantly, really enjoyed that. Overtime you get attached to your npc as they continuously get into fights and try to not lose a limb (seriously). Lore wise (if you are into that like I am) you start shifting through bits of relics from the past on your travels. You can buy maps or just randomly discover landmarks as you roam. There’s also politics and you’ll learn with time who is in charge of what. Is it safe to enter here or stay there? You are free to be whatever you want; Have a storefront and sell your crafts for cash (cats), explore and make bank with old artifacts you find, become a thief and run mock stealing, grow drugs and profit from that, you can build a base or not. Choose to make a large squad or keep is small. Watch as they fight & work together. Each play through is always different and if you love mods then you can go crazy with added customization. If that sounds good than you can totally wait for it to go on sale if anything. Kenshi 2 is in the works now so will definitely look forward to that one ☺️

Dymonika,

Everything can kill you.

Sounds like Noita.

Lurra,
@Lurra@lemm.ee avatar

Gotta look it up now ☺️

Dymonika,

Apparently Noita is gonna be in April’s Humble Choice, if that’s up your alley at all.

chloyster, do gaming w What are some games you find yourself frequently coming back to?

Binding of Isaac for sure. Been playing on and off since I was in high school and there is just so much content there and new crazy synergies to find. Across all platforms I have well over a thousand hours. Hoping I can 100% it some day!

@illectrility @Vej Solid backpack, but not a CCW backpack in any capacity

illectrility,

True and also just saw the no Velcro request. The inside of the backpack is all Velcro for the divisors

You might like Remnant or Remnant 2, I think.

Berttheduck,

Not sure it fits as it’s souls with guns, so missing the spectacle fighter element, but it’s definitely worth a look. They are both excellent games. I love the core loop they’ve got, the shooting feels excellent.

darkphotonstudio, do gaming w What are some games you find yourself frequently coming back to?

Doom (1993). Though, I use a source port and the Brutal Doom mod. The Binding of Isaac, as well.

Do you play any other Doom WADs?

darkphotonstudio,

No.

Not out yet, but coming very soon, Another Crab’s Treasure (Check the release date trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEaLBYS6YMw ).

Of course, since it’s not out, we can’t say if it’ll be a good game or not, but it looks good, and is a colourful looking soulslike. (Which I am looking forward to myself)

Quexotic, do gaming w What are some games you find yourself frequently coming back to?

Rayman Legends and Borderlands both live rent free in my mind. I don’t know how to feel about it.

Horizon Zero dawn comes in a close 3rd place.

TheBest,
@TheBest@midwest.social avatar

Man I WANT to love Horizon. It seems exactly like my type of game. But everytime I play it everything feels… insincere? Idk something about it doesnt hit. Still paid for it day one when it came to PC though to support the cross platform Sony initiative.

Mic_Check_One_Two,

For what it’s worth, I wasn’t a huge fan of the story at first. It took me a few hours and a few quests to actually get into it. It suffers from Kingdom Hearts 2/The Witcher 3 Syndrome: The two hour long intro/tutorial is absolutely the worst part, which is a shame. The game really begins to shine once you get to Meridian, but that’s several hours in.

TheBest,
@TheBest@midwest.social avatar

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The tutorial sections did absolutely put me off the first time, but I saw flashes of brilliance after I got over that hump. Definitely gonna give it another go after the Helldivers rush wears off.

The_Che_Banana,

If you can, srart collecting all the recordings and play them, they add so much depth to the game and…they are haunting.

beefcat,
@beefcat@beehaw.org avatar

My problem is that i can’t seem to get a hang of the combat, at all. Taking down even some medium sized dinobots feels like a slog, 20 minutes of me breaking line of sight, taking a pot shot at its weak point, and somehow missing, rinse and repeat. I feel the game either didn’t do a good job teaching me how to deal with them, or I’m just playing it wrong and don’t know better.

I’ve started the game three times and each time I get about 6 hours in before I get bored.

med, do gaming w Flashy, simple souls like?

The only soulslike that’s reasonably flashy yet simple enough that comes to mind is Code Vein

It’s slightly more cartoony than black desert, but has a high degree of character customization.

Story’s fine, but not required.

Combat was cool. I found it fine even on a bluetooth controller. Didn’t get massively frustrated with input lag.

Character builds can vary quite a lot, and are mostly viable. I played a glass cannon and my friend played a tank. They worked just fine alone or together. On that note, the coop is serviceable.

store.steampowered.com/app/678960/CODE_VEIN/

Probably wait for a discount.

flashgnash,

I’ve got code vein, got a fair way through it before my co op buddy bailed and then I didn’t pick it back up again

It is a little on the cartooney side as you say but it is cool looking

That next to last link does not work for me. Not sure if it is a regional thing, though

I was going to mention this! I don’t think it meets the criteria completely, but it is quite Souls-like in many aspects.

Juice88, do gaming w Flashy, simple souls like?
@Juice88@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure if it counts but Monster Hunter? That’s pretty much a boss rush game, especially Rise.

KrokanteBamischijf,

Just to be clear, Monster Hunter is 60% boss rush, 30% resource management and 10% gear progression.

Compared to Souls gameplay, Monster Hunter is more grindy and mission-based and you’re always pointed at the next big thing. Beat a monster, collect materials, craft weapons and armour, repeat ad nauseam. And do everything all over again when you hit High Rank.

Don’t go into Monster Hunter expecting a Souls game, it’s a different experience.

That said, I absolutely love the Monster Hunter series and have probably sunk over 800 hours into different entries combined. Definitely give them a go! And if you do, keep in mind that the newer games have some handholding QoL features not found in older games, so keep that in mind when you decide in which order you might want to experience the games.

I want to add OpenTTD and Battle for Polytopia to the list.
OpenTTD is a free as free can be transport simulation. You have to get used to the controls, but I had some fun with it on my android tablet. Although I prefer to play it on PC.
Battle for Polytopia is a Civilization style game with awesome Voxel graphic for mobile devices. One game in standard mode lasts about an hour. It is free2play in a way that you get the game and the first 3 civilizations for free and can buy additional ones for a small fee. Offline playing is possible and I've never seen any ads in it.

Oh, and of course try Gwent.
This is a CCG in the world of The Witcher - known from the books, the games and of course the Netflix series too.
It's free to play, and very generous to free players. No ads, no pay2win, and you gain ressources to craft your cards very fast.
If you want to see some gameplay: I am streaming it every wednesday on Twitch.

Might not fit exactly but check out Titan Souls

flashgnash,

Titan souls looks awesome and I may well give that a try, not sure it scratches the same itch as 3d souls likes though

bungle_in_the_jungle, do gaming w Flashy, simple souls like?

Not sure exactly how much this fits the bill for you but Kena: Bridge of Spirits may be what you’re looking for. I personally describe it as a Pixar game with Souls-ish combat.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

What about its combat is souls-ish?

I mean I love Kena, but it’s more a game comparable to other classical action-adventures such as the Zelda games, not Dark Souls as it places very little focus on accurate dodging and judging when not to dodge, plus it has no gameplay loop built around repeated death.

flashgnash,

I have tried out kena, it never really hooked me for some reason. Cool looking game, I like the art style

I think part of it was it felt very soft and family friendly, as you say it’s a lot like a Pixar movie
