theangriestbird,

I’d bet that the “former WOW devs” population encompasses like 30% of all working game devs at this point. It’s been going for so long and I’m sure a lot of small roles were filled with short-term employees.

theangriestbird,

“… Characters feature a lot of details that, while seemingly unnecessary now, will become relevant in the future of the project.”

Custom Dentist Minigame DLC confirmed!

theangriestbird,

I wish for a way to capture 30-60 seconds of a simulation to go forward and backwards in Photo mode.

Pretty sure both Nvidia and the Windows Game Bar (Win+G I think?) have recording functionality. Not exactly what you’re looking for, but an easy way to capture a short vid and then scrub through later for screenshots.

theangriestbird,

Ohhhh gotcha you’re wishing the cinematic camera mod was in the game 😂 that was the name of the mod that did that in CS1. lack of mods is another reason I’m holding off on this one!

The Cities Skylines 2 Hardware Benchmarking, Performance, and Settings Guide - CityPlannerPlays (youtube.com) angielski

A nice, level-headed video from Cities: Skylines YouTuber CityPlannerPlays, cataloging performance benchmarks for C:S2 on a variety of systems. I know I set off a firestorm on my C:S2 post the other day - hopefully this helps y’all make rational decisions about this janky (but quickly improving) release....

Well, Cities: Skylines 2 is here, and it's another broken game release. angielski

I don’t really understand how people make the review threads, but we’re sitting at a 77 on OpenCritic right now. Many were worried about game performance after the recommended specs were released, but it looks like it’s even worse than we expected. It sounds like the game is mostly a solid release except for the...

theangriestbird,

If you compare the game on max settings to modded C:S1 (and if you ignore the leveling plot issues), I actually think it looks better than C:S1, or at least pretty close.

theangriestbird,

Here’s a pre-release video from City Planner Plays that discusses the new roadway options. I believe even C:S1 added in snap-to-angle options eventually, which made it very easy to build roads at right angles. Unless you mean parallel roads? This is something that vanilla C:S1 did not have, but it looks like C:S2 has that on launch. The new road-building tools are one of the features that had me most hyped.

theangriestbird, (edited )

Yep we better all go drop $3k on a new computer so we can get this game to playable fps!

theangriestbird,

What is your deal? Do you believe that gaming should only be a hobby for the wealthy, or?

theangriestbird,

No one is expecting the game to release with 0 bugs. It’s the severity and quantity of bugs that is the issue.

FWIW, my current take is that this release would be fine if they had simply released it in early access.

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games? angielski

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

theangriestbird,

oh man. It’s wild how prestige games are always trying so hard to be like prestige movies and TV, but somehow they have not yet adopted the practice of the recap.

theangriestbird,

oooooh i love that. Like Amazon Prime Video’s X-ray feature (which i really wish other streaming services would adopt).

theangriestbird,

Nintendo is very good about this in all their games. I think it’s primarily because on the Switch, if you are using an individual JoyCon, the actual button names are not consistent, so you have to rely on the position of the button to convey which one you want players to press. I don’t think you can control BOTW or TOTK with an individual JoyCon, but I imagine they have those assets just ready to go.

theangriestbird,

A new Mario game blew the critics away? Who could have predicted this?

sarcasm aside, i’ve been sort of skeptical of scores on reviews of Mario games ever since the New Super Mario Bros series. Critics seem to be physically incapable of giving a Mario game a low score, as best immortalized by this videogamedunkey video.

theangriestbird,

eeeeexactly. I’m not gonna say they haven’t earned that respect, but it’s still frustrating when you just want good, honest reviews.

theangriestbird,

totally. I’m sure that if you’re a reviewer reviewing the 3rd New Super Mario Bros game, and you come out of it feeling like the game was pretty mid, it can feel scary to post a review with the lowest score. It’s easy with something like an Ubisoft game, where the quality of their games has been in question for years now. But with a Mario game? We all know the internet is full of assholes that will tear you apart for giving a bad score to bad game from a beloved franchise.

I swear i watch more videos than just dunkey, but this recent vid of his actually captured this other side of the coin pretty well.

theangriestbird,

yeah this is an unfortunate part of the modern game review landscape. Probably the reason why many people just watch their favorite influencers for game opinions instead.

theangriestbird,

thank you for your take! you make a valid point. Also dunkey clearly edited that down to every critical thing he said about the game and none of the positive things. The point stands that I have trouble trusting review scores on Mario games, and this is me speaking as someone that loves Mario games and is hyped for Wonder.

theangriestbird,

No, and yet Steam is still winning. Game Pass can be a sick deal but many still prefer paying just a little more on a Steam Sale to own a game forever.

theangriestbird,

I hear u on this, I’m just speaking to the real world use case. I get that Valve could shut off Steam tomorrow and that would be it, but the odds of that happening are low. What I’m saying is, if I usually take 2 months to finish a single-player game, and the game regularly goes on sale for $20, I’m always going to buy the game on Steam vs. Game Pass. That way, if I decide I want to play it 3 monrhs later, I don’t have to pay ANOTHER $10 to Microsoft to access it.

And if Valve takes the game away in 10 years? That sucks for game preservation reasons, but realistically I almost never play games that are more than 10 years old.

theangriestbird,

showcasing why i stopped watching ZP years ago. not that yahtzee had to always come up with a new theme song, but like nothing about the format has changed since he joined The Escapist a decade ago.

theangriestbird,

I love that the thumbnail for every article about Starfield is an uncomfortable close-up of a character’s dialogue face.

theangriestbird,
theangriestbird,

yeah tbh I don’t think the comparison to gaming chairs is 100% there. Everyone can benefit from a better office chair, but most people can’t perceive the audio difference between a gaming headset vs dedicated audiophile headphones + dedicated mic. While it may be true that it sounds better, it’s just not worth the extra hassle for most people. I have a wireless Arctis headset and the ease of use is unreal.

theangriestbird,

I don’t know FFT too well, so i did NOT read through your spoiler post. Just wanted to say that Remap is planning on doing a retrospective podcast sometime soon, so that might be a cool place to hear some deeper analysis and discussion on the game. They’re doing it under their Remap 101 series, which is a continuation of the Waypoint 101 series from before Vice dissolved Waypoint.

That said, only one of their crew seems genuinely hyped about the podcast (Cado, who has been streaming their playthrough for the upcoming pod), so it might not hit as hard as the Waypoint/Remap 101 podcasts usually do.

theangriestbird,

there isn’t one. At the moment, they aren’t aiming that high. Their performance varies wildly from game to game, but at best, their most powerful card atm punches at about 3060 levels.

theangriestbird,

damn this hits. Watching him just flip through all the voices like nothing makes me think of Charles like the Mel Blanc of our time, just holding all these wacky personalities in his head.

theangriestbird,

Smash players are real serious about their latency

theangriestbird,

they do use bluetooth. However, it should be noted that not all BT devices are created equally. Check out this table from RTINGS.com of reviews of wireless bluetooth headsets. You can see that the very worst headsets have 300+ milliseconds of latency, while the very best have almost 0 ms of latency. I imagine that the Joycons hit a similarly low latency.

theangriestbird,

I think your idea sounds neat! Have you ever played any Zachtronics games? Those games have kind of a “programmer” logic to them, and might be useful to you in getting ideas on how to dress up programming concepts as game mechanics. I could see Zachtronics fans really digging your game idea. One of their games, Exapunks, is literally about being hacker and doing actual (simplified) programming to beat levels. Another called Opus Magnum dresses up the concept as a “transmutation machine” that you must program to create alchemical creations.

theangriestbird,

It’s 10x worse than whatever you’re imagining.

theangriestbird,

just with the sales and free online/cloudsaves PCs are cheaper in the long run

This may be true, but then i think this is just annother example of how it is more expensive to be poor. Even if PCs are cheaper in the long run, it’s hard to scrounge up the $1000+ upfront to buy a worthwhile PC if you’re living paycheck-to-paycheck. Over 60% of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck. If you are living that way, it’s much easier to come up with the $300-500 for a console (in the US, that’s an average tax refund amount), and then the $15 a month for gamepass/PS plus. And don’t tell me you can buy a lowend PC for that price - any PC you buy for $500 is gonna play games worse than the comparable console.

In cases where our only power is in our wallet, people with bigger wallets will be the only ones with actual power.

theangriestbird,

yes of course, we all know Best Buy accepts common sense as payment when you don’t have enough money for that 4060 🙃

theangriestbird,

To what extent were the og Saint’s Row games and the remake made by the same people? I know Volition’s name was on both games, but I wonder if a lot of the experienced leaders left Volition after Saints Row 4? Seems like that’s always the explanation whenever a studio’s games take a sudden dip in quality.

theangriestbird,

Is it a “boycott” if they raise their prices to unreasonable levels and everyone independently decides that that is too much?

theangriestbird,

i’m just saying it seems silly to me to boycott a price increase. That isn’t a boycott. That’s just being a consumer and deciding that the value isn’t worth the price anymore.

theangriestbird,

Thank you for understanding my meaning. Sorry if this is coming off as pedantic, @zevlan! It just strikes me as odd phrasing lol. Saying “This is too much money for me/not worth it to me anymore because xyz. What do y’all think?” would be how I would phrase this post. “Boycott” is usually used in the context of a political choice. I, for example, am boycotting Activision-Blizzard as a personal choice bc of the sexual harassment shit that they never really answered for. I really WANT to play Diablo 4, and the price is a good value to me, but still I don’t buy it because I am boycotting. They could sell it for $5 and I still would not buy it, until I am convinced that they have actually done something about that harassment.

theangriestbird,

u don’t even need the /s lol. the apple thing is really just a more sophisticated version of this. A lot of folks got the impression that it is a a camera of the user’s eyes. it isn’t. it’s actually like a 3D render, that uses the eye tracking to mirror where the user is looking.

In some ways, googly eyes achieve a similar effect. lol

Having a hard time settling on a VPN angielski

I torrent (on the same PC that I run a Plex server from), but also auto connect on my devices whenever I’m on public wifi, so speed and avoiding blocks/captchas is also important. From what I understand having port forwarding will make a big difference in my torrent transfer speeds and ability to connect to peers....

theangriestbird, (edited )

Idk if this was the article you were thinking of, but I used this article from torrentfreak and also settled on Mullvad. I’ve been subscribed for years, they’re great and pretty cheap.

Edit: I reread your post and realized that you’re looking for a VPN with port forwarding. Frankly, I trust Mullvad enough at this point that if they removed port forwarding as a feature, then I assume that feature is probably just a bad idea for VPNs in general.

theangriestbird,

That first City of Tears moment is incredible.

theangriestbird,

tbh my most recent one is probably Forza Horizon 5. I’m not really a “car guy” but nothing beats getting high and doing sick jumps over gorgeous natural landscapes in bodacious sports cars. Bonus points if your Ferrari has an anime girl spraypainted on the hood.

theangriestbird,

it’s great! but it’s hard. if you don’t have patience for difficult platforming and/or difficult 2d combat, it might not click for you.

theangriestbird,

I remember split-screen being real shaky for D:OS2 on the PS4. Not surprised that they struggled to get it working for this even-more-demanding game on a resource-limited console.

theangriestbird,

I’m just telling you, it ran fine on my laptop with no discrete GPU 🤷 RAM seemed to be the only limiting factor. But yeah if you’re stuck with 8GB, it would probably be rough. I mean it’s free, so you could always give it a shot? I think it might just use your page file, which would be slow but might still produce results?

theangriestbird,

The industry is very different than it was when Bioware joined EA. I think these days, smaller devs are more leery of being acquired by the giants. That said, studios like Double Fine and Obsidian saw a value in being acquired, so who knows? Maybe Larian will join EA someday, when the lead designers are ready to cash out.

theangriestbird,

i hear you, but we live in a capitalist world. Dev studios are made up of people, and those people sometimes run out of fuel and want to move on to other adventures. Selling to a large studio is a great way to make that transition, from an individual perspective. Your studio was already going to hand the reins over to the next generation, so why not take the payout? We can’t fault our favorite artists for not wanting to keep making the same thing over and over again for the rest of their lives.
