I beat Kingdom Hearts 1 last week, so this week I’m doing Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories! I think I’m about halfway through now, just finishing floor 12 I think, but the battle’s been rough on me to say the least. I think I’m gonna need to grind up some cards and levels today to get past it.

This is a truly pathetic attempt to save face. Fuck Unity, its now proven definitively that they cannot be trusted for current and future projects. The only thing they’ll learn from this is to not be so loud about these sorts of changes.

X/Tweet/thing from Stephen Totilo

NEW - I got a major update from Unity about their new fees

  • Unity “regrouped” and now says ONLY the initial installation of a game triggers a fee
  • Demos mostly won’t trigger fees
  • Devs not on the hook for Game Pass
ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

How does Unity track my installs?

All they’ll say is what amounts to “just trust us, it’s fiiiine”

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m thinking they might addsome engine-side telemetry we don’t know about, but they’re refusing to actually say anything about how they’re tracking this.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup, no information on how they actually get that information. The only assumption I can make is that it’s some sort of telemetry in the installer or the engine

Unity: YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND! YOU DON’T KNOW THE FULL STORY
Devs: You’re charging us based on how many times a game gets installed and reinstalled, or opened in streaming services?
Unity: Oh so you do have the full story. What’s wrong with that?

Plainly, whoever’s at the head of this doesn’t understand developers or the industry, and is likely refusing to listen to their subordinates.

This is a Lemmy instance, I’d recommend posting Lemmy-formatted links (!game@instance.xyz) here, and kbin-formatted (@instance.xyz@game) links in a kbin-hosted instance.

Good. Free trial is continuing to be all but the 3 latest expansions, and is expanding with the next expac launch. It’d be nice if I could switch my account to limited-access so I can do free trial content on my main even if my sub lapses, though.

But them being driven by subscriptions has helped them keep the game focused on player enjoyment. I hope it never goes F2P q-q

Looking for games with unique core mechanics

I’m requesting for recommendations for games that stand out from the rest in their genre, and not in the sense of being the best game in that niche but actually bringing something new and innovative to the table. I’ve not had much experience in gaming, but I have a few games to give you a hint on what I am talking about:...

ram, (edited )
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar
  • Majora’s Mask: a 3-day timeloop where everything resets when you go back
  • Katamari: A giant ball gets rolled around and collects stuff forever
  • Baba Is You: Movable text is rules to the game
  • Untitled Goose Game: You have to piss people off the right way
  • Billie Bust Up^[unreleased]^: Musicals tell you upcoming platforming challenges
  • Celeste: every time you die you quickly reset on the same “page”/small tile of map
  • Splatoon: you shoot at the ground to go faster, hide, and/or win
  • Odama: real-time tactical wargame pinball
  • Golf Story: Golf-based fetch quests
  • Astral Chain: asynchronously control a companion in combat
  • Okami: paint skills on-screen in combat
  • Astro Bears: Snake but in 3D
  • Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime: Up to 4 players pilot parts of a ship together
  • Pokemon Ranger: draw circles around monsters to catch them
  • Viva Pinata: breed pinatas to create new species
  • Spore: create and evolve a creature

I’ve not played it myself, but I’ve heard the final act jumps the shark pretty bad.

Dropout.tv (formerly CollegeHumour) is also an unstruck company.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

It doesn’t, unfortunately. Programmers, animators, concept artists, designers, each need to unionize in order to leverage collective action grants at the bargaining table. With last week’s decision by the NLRB though, it’s certain to be easier than ever to get unionized. Still, the amount of coordination it gets to even petition the NLRB to have your union recognized is no small feat. Just now it’ll be that much more difficult to bust a union election

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup, was just Steam DRM. There’s universal tools to crack that. Less so “you can’t play our game unless you spend money” and more “it’s slightly inconvenient to install this way, innit? Why don’t you go buy it instead, bruv?”

Sony just shot themselves in the foot.

I don’t know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I’m an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It’s not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want PlayStation+, nor will they purchase any of Sony’s games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated an entire market with this move. Sony, publicly apologize and cancel your 30% price hike for PS+ or you can kiss your business goodbye.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s a 15 year old copypasta lol

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Fair! The og was about Square “shooting themselves” in the foot over releasing FFXIII on the 360. It’s one of my favs

ram, (edited )
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s only Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Do not expect, nor hope for, literally anything else.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve not played enough of the other FF games since 7 to say with certainty, but FF7,12,14, and 15 were extremely explicit political dramas. That was their entire plots

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

$9.99 for a month of gamepass PC, or $10.99 for console (ultimate you’re paying for cloud access or online play, so it’s a disingenuous comparison) You can play starfield for a month, then buy it for 20% off through gamepass, so $55.99. $55.99+10.99 = $66.98.

So you basically get a $11 month-long trial, then $2 off the full price if you decide you like it enough to keep.

In its first week, Immortals of Aveum had a peak count of just 751 players on Steam. (steamdb.info) angielski

After 5 years in development and heavily pushing Unreal Engine 5 technologies, Immortals of Aveum was met with a whopping 751 player peak. For reference, Forspoken was considered a flop but still had over 12,000 players peak total. This may be the biggest flop of the year.

ram,

It is an indie game tho, it’s just published under EA’s EA Originals label which is for indie studios.

I got some malware yesterday, here are the sites I visited as a warning angielski

Windows defender showed it as being a trojan- it appeared as a popup with a sports betting page popup anytime I opened my browser. I quarantined it and took care of it and did a few different scans with windows defender and malware bytes, all of which came back negative after the initial scan....

ram,

Fr you’re a mod, you’re not allowed to be a human with feelings and ideas and opinions! Just blindly care about the community, don’t contribute to the discourse!!

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Fuck him, not for trying to get the game out there, but for trying to make a profit off it.

ram,

Arguing is a large part of discord.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Steam and GOG also take 30%. Nintendo, Microsoft, Google, and Apple too for that matter. The only exception is Epic who takes IIRC 12%?

ram,

You know all these companies have investments from the same Chinese company, right?

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

This is great news. Glad to see Xbox players will get to play this fantastic game!!

ram,

If they go against that now, then they’ve engaged in false advertising and will immediately get slapped with a huge lawsuit and/or fine,

No they won’t. Companies aren’t beholden to their commitments from advertisements in perpetuity. In the first place, someone would need to sue, or begin a class action. That’d drag out for years, and almost certainly lose.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Cloud streaming is their sole complaint, but yes the regulators are idiot.s

ram, (edited )
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

a game of this magnitude isn’t a common occurrence.

It kind of is though. We’ve already had at least 3 games of this magnitude drop this year alone.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

None are baldur’s gate. While I’m loving baldur’s gate, it’s far from a market disruptor. The three games I was thinking of were TOTK, Diablo 4, and FFXVI.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

To be clear, of the ones listed I only care about TOTK and BG3. I’m looking at “megaton games” by a general ascertainment of how relevant they are to the enthusiast gamers, and how much they sell. FFXVI came out and kinda did not great for an FF game so I’ll concede there. No idea about Diablo 4, I assume it was middling or “as expected”, while TOTK sold 18 million in its first 6 weeks; though I may largely be familiar with that due to being in proximity of Nintendo-related circles.

It really is subjective what measure we’re using though. BG3’s been amazing in relative terms to what would typically be expected of “DnD RPG” (maybe there’s a better term), and developers have been reacting to it far more than they would most other megaton games. TOTK’s no slouch on its own, impressing developers over its extremely impressive yet performent physics engine.

polygon.com/…/tears-of-the-kingdom-bridge-physics…

Anyways, not really interested in arguing my perspective though, since like you said this is extremely subjective, and honestly quite arbitrary.

ram,
@ram@lemmy.ca avatar

Fair say! I’m personally not someone who particularly vibes with the aesthetic of bethesda games so I’ll be missing out, but I hope it’s as good as fans expect ❤️
