here’s a stream VOD of Jeff Gerstmann (formerly of Gamespot, Giant Bomb) checking them out, if that kind of thing interests you.

theangriestbird,

we all float down here, georgie

theangriestbird,

I’m writing them myself. Been trying to make a habit of it, at least over here on Beehaw.

theangriestbird,

thank you, i appreciate the acknowledgment! I think it’s also good for me to have this very minor barrier to posting, so i don’t just mindlessly flood beehaw with every meme i see elsewhere on the internet. lol

theangriestbird,

oh man. I remember Jeff Bakalar of Giant Bomb had a real-life version of that Funhouse table (he was indefinitely “borrowing” it from someone who was sick of it taking up space). The stories he told on the Giant Beastcast about that dummy head staring at him in the dark of his garage…

theangriestbird,

That your first time with Dark Souls? I played it for the first time on that remaster a couple of years back. I remember those goddamn Anor Londo archers being maybe the only thing in the game that pissed me off so much I had to quit and come back. Damn near EVERYTHING in that game feels “tough but fair” except for those fucking archers.

theangriestbird,

For some reason I can’t put down Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire. I’m playing it on my handheld emulator so it’s very easy to just pick up and play a round when i have some spare moments. Pinball has never been my favorite genre, but the loop of actually catching Pokemon across sessions has been weirdly compelling. Idk if all pinball tables are this way, but most of the time when I lose a ball, it feels like I did nothing wrong and the game just decided to bounce off a pixel the wrong way and shoot into the out lane. I will probably put it down when I get the retro achievement for catching 100 Pokemon, because I seem to be getting worse the more I play. lol

Also finally playing Jedi: Fallen Order whenever I have more than just a few moments to game. I’m a big Star Wars head (in the non-toxic way 😅), so I will go in and out of phases where a Jedi video game sounds super compelling. It finally hit me, and man is this game fun when you’re just playing and mowing down Stormtroopers. My only gripe is that the game still feels buggy and hitchy, even 5 years since it came out. I don’t mind it most of the time, except the game is quite fond of in-engine cutscenes. and when these happen, I want to shut my brain off and enjoy the story like a Star Wars show. But little tiny bugs and glitches (jittery cloth effects, characters facing the wrong way) keep taking me out of it. I definitely feel like i’m committed to seeing it through, though.

theangriestbird,

ahaha i think those are the exact two places where i looked things up. did you have a moment where you beat the archers, but then fell off the ledge on accident before you got to the next checkpoint. i did…

theangriestbird,

i heard they made a sequel for that one. not many people know about it!

theangriestbird,

what do you like most about it? is it hitting something unique, or is it just really nice open world “comfort food” gaming?

theangriestbird,

aha you join the long list of gamers that tried and failed to get their partner into a Larian game.

theangriestbird,

hmmm that sounds intriguing…i wonder if it has any retroachievements? a surprising number of romhacks do have achievement sets. i want to check but the site is down rn 😭

theangriestbird,

That makes sense! I haven’t played them, but I remember the marketing of WD1 having a more serious tone. It’s always nice when you have the perfect game to scratch a particular itch

theangriestbird,

i love sharing direct updates from developers! small bit of feedback: in the future, maybe you could put “[Factorio]” in the post title to make it immediately obvious what the post is about from the timeline? In a Factorio-focused community this would be obvious, but it’s less obvious in this general gaming community.

theangriestbird,
theangriestbird,

i was in your exact situation and only have a Switch because I got it before the Steam Deck was announced.

I will say though: a Switch is way better than a PC for couch co-op games. Setting up multiple controllers on PC games remains a tremendous PITA.

theangriestbird,

for a while there, it was actually better to play Switch games on PC with an emulator than it was to play it on the actual Switch. BOTW and TOTK were gorgeous in 1440p 60fps, wish all gamers got to experience that.

theangriestbird,

when i have my non-tech savvy friends over, i don’t want to make them sit there for 5 minutes while i try to connect all the controllers, and then make sure the game in question recognizes them all and isn’t trying to map all controllers to one input or something. Maybe it’s gotten better in the time since I last tried, but my experience has not been “2 minutes to run the mapper”. On the Switch, you just press a button on each controller and you’re rolling.

theangriestbird,

Well the NES and SNES were a different bag. In those gens, Nintendo had a good, affordable console with a solid library of games. Back then, that alone was revolutionary, so they essentially created the market out of thin air and then reaped those benefits. I guess the Switch is the same in the sense that Nintendo struck when the iron was hottest - 2017 was the perfect time to make and release a handheld/TV hybrid console. The tech was just strong enough and just affordable enough to make the concept work, but there weren’t really any competitors yet. Fast forward to 2024 and now we have the Steam Deck and all of its copycats eating that lunch a little, but when the Switch came out, there was nothing else quite like it.

theangriestbird,

what percentage of active Switches are “Mario Kart machines”, do you think? I’d bet money on like…10% at least.

theangriestbird,
theangriestbird,

this is a good point. funny how we got the prices down and then they ended up right back where they started! Well…for everyone except Nintendo, but who knows? Maybe this successor will come with an “inflation” induced price increase?

theangriestbird,

theangriestbird,

leave me alone you stupid ass birds

theangriestbird,

Mad Catz and their controllers that seem like they were designed by two actual, mad, cats. They still make ridiculous stuff like their R.A.T. mouse with like a dozen different dials and sliders and removable parts for customization:

Of course, I think Mad Catz was absorbed by some other company at some point, so i’m not 100% on if it’s even the same people anymore. But the spirit is alive and well, it would seem.

theangriestbird,
theangriestbird,

it must be hard to be a gamer with big hands. it ain’t me, but i feel for you. You know they made a special 20th anniversary re-release of the duke, right?

theangriestbird,

Very cool. I wish I had something like that for the Switch, so I could play Balatro with one hand while petting my cat with the other.

theangriestbird,

Hitboxes are something else. I understand why they are ideal, but it’s so funny to see years of ergonomic evolution compressed down to a box with a bunch of buttons on it, for more precision. Lol.

theangriestbird,

Omg WHOA That’s actually very impressive!

theangriestbird,

the orb! The Orb was the number one controller i had in mind when making this post. I never had one but i’ve watched so many videos about it. It’s like a controller from an alternate timeline of what could have been, if we never moved to analog sticks or mouse look. Apparently the tech is still preferred in the 3D CAD space. After several acquisitions, the company is now a Logitech subsidiary called “3Dconnexion”, and they make CAD tools like the SpaceMouse that use the same 6-axis tech that the SpaceOrb used:

theangriestbird,

Kinda? Idk I guess to my mind, “weird controllers” is distinct from “peripherals”, but i can’t really explain how.

theangriestbird,

tbh i might just be inclined to view older peripherals as controllers? Which isn’t exactly clear and logical. Idk, i guess the counter to that is that I would consider Guitar Hero guitars “peripherals” rather than “controllers”, so you maybe it is a “general” vs “specific” thing. Except a lot of these controllers we’re talking about were only officially supported by like, 5 games at most. So i’m back to not knowing the difference haha.

theangriestbird,

This drives me nuts on the Switch on handheld. The Joycons have no natural “grip”, so it’s hand cramp city unless you invest in a grip case. Was it so hard to give the Joycons an ergonomic shape?

theangriestbird,

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for this. To my mind, the modern Xbox controller is the perfect controller for PC. Like you said, this the AA batteries and colorways are great, unique features. On top of this, it’s well-laid out, feels good in the hand, and every button, stick, and trigger feels great to use. And most importantly, it has the broadest compatibility. Every game recognizes the Xbox controller, and almost every game has Xbox button prompts built in.

The only thing missing is hall-effect sticks, but I’ve never experienced stick drift on an Xbox controller so it’s not like I would notice a difference.

theangriestbird,

DS4? As in the one for the PS4? It’s a bit of an unfair comparison bc they are different gens, but i would definitely argue that the current Xbox Series controllers are higher build-quality than the DS4. My Xbox One controller had creaky, rattly shoulders and an okay but not great d-pad. The newer ones fix that, fortunately.

All that said, I will not dispute that it’s probably less ideal for smaller hands. Sony has always gotten that part right.
