TIL about Bomba Patch, a series of Brazilian mods for Pro Evolution Soccer for the PS2 that, for a number of years, were more popular than the official FIFA games. (en.wikipedia.org) angielski

Bomba updates the game with current rosters, Brazilian translations, a custom theme song, and even meme teams (like a team of real players that all went to prison at some point, and the whole team is in matching prison gear. They’re still updating to this day! The Patch was originally sold on discs, but has since moved to...

theangriestbird,

I wonder why PES specifically is so popular for this? I think it has something to do with PS2’s being able to play burned discs without needing a hardware mod, but i’m not 100% sure.

theangriestbird,

and the gyroids! and the NES emulators! There are additions to modern AC that really bring it up a notch (custom fashion, WAY more furniture items), but there really was a charm to the original that modern Nintendo would never bring back. They don’t want to scare kids with villagers that could be anything other than vaguely positive towards you, and they don’t want to give their back catalog away for “free”.

theangriestbird,

wtf it DOES??? this is important news

Uhhhh...Goomba? (beehaw.org) angielski

[alt text: a screenshot from “Mario Super Sluggers” (a Mario baseball game for the Wii), showing Goomba stepping up to the plate and Wario on the pitcher’s mound. Goomba has no hands, yet the baseball bat appears to be emerging from somewhere between their chin and their feet, which creates a suggestive image.]

this could have been an email (beehaw.org) angielski

[alt text: an illustration of Jarl Balgruuf the Greater from The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, in which the Jarl appears to have been woken up very early in the morning. There is text on screen in the style of the dialogue options in Skyrim, which says, “I need your help. I need to trap a dragon in your palace.”]

[Request] Retro Recommendations angielski

I’m trying my best to dive back into the past and play all the gems that I missed as a kid because I was either born too late or too much of a kid to consider playing them. I found myself really disappointed going back to the old mario nes/snes titles because they felt really bad to play as I’ve become accustomed to modern...

theangriestbird,

There’s a remake of Kirby’s adventure for the GBA that will probably feel a bit better.

theangriestbird,

You have tons of great game suggestions here so i’m not gonna suggest another game. I’m just going to recommend RetroAchievements as a way to add a little meta-progression fun to your retro journey, if you aren’t using them already. They integrate into various popular emulators (RetroArch especially), and it’s fun to be playing Super Mario World and get a little extra recognition for beating a boss.

theangriestbird,

extremely fair! I just broke a 2-month fever with Pokemon Pinball bc I became obsessed with getting the “beaten” marker on RA. I think I was still having fun up to the end? but not totally clear. So I get it. lol

theangriestbird,

Yeah but after Cities:Skylines 2, you have to imagine that LBY had to be looking ROUGH if Paradox was afraid of showing it to the world. They probably did us a mercy tbh.

theangriestbird,

The latest EA sims stuff has just been utter micro transaction slop, or at least last I checked.

Feels like the only valid way to play the Sims these days is to pirate it. No one wants to pay $500 for the complete DLC collection, and if you don’t have that you’ll always be plagued with fomo and possible mod conflicts.

theangriestbird,

C:S 2 got lots of preview coverage as well. Marketers are very good at hiding performance issues in preview coverage.

Aliexpress is definitely the way to go. Here’s a link to spreadsheet with the best prices from legit stores: Link

(Compiled by /u/DargillaUomo over on reddit - i think he earns an affiliate cut, but they do seem to genuinely be the best prices if you’re buying new)

theangriestbird,

you bet! I got really into these handheld emulators like 6 months ago, just glad my hyper-obsession could help someone else!

theangriestbird,

imo it’s sort of like computer graphics cards. There is never one singular best time to buy because something better is always right around the corner, and prices are always fluctuating up and down. If the SP is drawing you in to buy now, then go for it! The SP already emulates every non-analog stick console perfectly (and even a couple that do have analog sticks), so it’s not like there’s any point to waiting for a more powerful device.

theangriestbird,

Hell yeah! What’s your other one? I’m pretty content with my RGB30, personally.

theangriestbird,

All you had to do was pay the damn workers, CJ…

theangriestbird,

oh man you have to pomodoro it? I do not have kids, but I feel like this would sort of kill the fun for me a bit. It would make play feel like work. I get that maybe that’s just what you gotta do, but I do not envy gaming parents.

theangriestbird,

Patrick says as much in the article, saying that he’d rather spend the time with his kids now while they still want to spend time with him.

theangriestbird,

Really, if any game in your Steam library has a playtime of over 500 hours, you may be getting enough value from the games you buy that a catalog service actually becomes worse value by comparison.

I fit in this bucket, and so do a few of my friends. I’ve gotten so used to the Steam gamer lifestyle of waiting for games to go on sale, buying them on sale, and then slowly building up a massive catalog of games that I think I will enjoy gaming. It’s very rare that a hot new game will entice me to play it without waiting for a sale, because I know what it feels like to be disappointed in a $70 purchase.

If there is a hot new game that I am interested in, Game Pass might be appealing because it allows me play a new game for cheaper. But I also don’t play games very quickly, because I’m busy. A narrative single-player game usually takes me at least two months to get through. If I play that game via PC Game Pass, that’s at least $24. Most of the time, I can get a game on sale for $24 or less within 2 years of that game’s initial release.

I also think about how, if I go the Game Pass route, I will feel a pressure to play that game quickly, because I feel like the meter is running and I don’t want to waste my money. This makes it harder to enjoy the game because I am forced to play it at times that I don’t really feel like it. If I instead buy the game on sale, I can pick up and put the game down at my leisure, which just fits my life better. Sometimes waiting for the sale sucks, but I have my backlog to keep me warm.

theangriestbird,

Fuck YES! Unions unions unions! Unionize the whole industry, let’s fucking goooooo

Some of my favorite homies on the internet! I need Oberhof Racing merch ASAP

theangriestbird,

strangely-relevant meme that crossed my feed after posting this:

theangriestbird,

You should see how excited some kids are about Roblox. I used to work in public schools around like 2017, and even then I met kids who were OBSESSED.

And I think you’re 100% right - parents are responsible for this just as much as Roblox themselves. But the point is that Roblox could absolutely be doing more.

theangriestbird,

there was 3D Dot Game Heroes for the PS3. I think that sorta qualifies? No other games are coming to mind.

theangriestbird,

I’m not sure why this style isn’t more common! My guess is that the main indie engines (Unreal and Unity) aren’t built for it without some heavy modification, and so if a dev is interested in this style, they settle for voxel graphics that don’t snap to a voxel grid.

theangriestbird,

Found the fortnite developer. I didn’t know they ever let you guys take breaks!

theangriestbird,

I always wonder this with these brand crossovers that fortnite has become synonymous with. My guess is that it’s something close to “neither” - there is a contract that is signed, but I think because both parties benefit, very little money actually changes hands between Epic and the IP owner.

theangriestbird,

Sadly, it remains a great game to play with friends bc even casual gamers understand the appeal. So alas…it continues to take up 60gb on my games drive.

theangriestbird,

New first-party peripherals, with less than a year left on the console in question? Idk, the only other one that comes to mind is PS4 back button attachment, and that was also puzzling, then and still.

theangriestbird,

As an aside: Magnets to attach the joycons seem miserable.

How so? It doesn’t sound revolutionary, but it does at least sound like an improvement over the current plastic rails system?

theangriestbird,

well the rumor at the moment is that the new console will be backwards compatible with the old joycons. they won’t attach to the new console, but you will still be able to connect and play with old joycons.

theangriestbird,

so far all we have is rumors, but i think the stuff i read said that they would be theoretically stronger than the plastic rails, at least from forces from specific angles. They’re supposed to use this new kind of electromagnet tech where it only needs a small burst of energy to activate or deactivate the magnet. Time will tell if Nintendo can actually pull that off, but it sure would be neat!

theangriestbird,

That’s fair! I mean I have Animal Crossing ones, and they’re not really that special, just unique colors. Other thing to consider is stick drift - if you’ve had your special edition Joycons for awhile, they may be on their way out pretty soon…

theangriestbird,

Here is Dolphin’s article about the release, where they talk about the nuts and bolts a bit more: dolphin-emu.org/…/unlocked-retroachievements-come…
