I own a couple actual vintage arcade machines and paid less for them than this. If you shop around you can find deals.

I also have one of these 1up cabs and it is definitely not like vintage. Software may be the same but it is using a modern monitor not a CRT. I think I paid around 300 for it several years ago. Not full size.

I've always been pretty bad at Tetris. This video was very engaging and entertaining. It tells a great story.

Almost ALL aliens in sci-fi have human form.

Fantasy fiction should not be categorized near sci-fi AT ALL. Unless it is some sort of cross-over or hybrid, keep it away from the sci-fi.

Old school sci-fi (Niven, Asimov, etc.) is WAY BETTER than this newfangled stuff.

Dune and Star Wars blow.

Brackeys is back, and will now make tutorials on Godot (www.youtube.com) angielski

This is exciting news for every aspiring game developer! Brackeys, a popular YouTuber who used to make in-depth and very user-friendly tutorials about Unity, is returning after a long hiatus, and will now create tutorials on Godot (for those who don’t know, it’s a FOSS game engine, but I’m pretty sure that, if you have an...

Just curious: How do these 2 stack up? In what ways are they better or worse than each other?

guyrocket,

I enjoy Vector Pinball quite a bit. Have also been playing Chip Defense, Gridle and Lexica.

RE: Is Ernest still here? (kbin.social) angielski

I check in here quite often, but for now, I'm just focusing on clearing spam and keeping the instance alive. In January, I was working on the AP module, and there has been significant progress in the work, which hasn't been publicly published yet. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the year, I developed a skin condition that...

I decided to never make an in game purchase for one of the games I play the most. Only once did some random call me a "poor", which made me laugh. One the stupider things I've heard someone say in that game.

Ur-Quan Masters released on Steam (for free) (store.steampowered.com)

You might know the game under the name Star Control 2. It’s a wonderful game that involves wandering around deep space, meeting aliens, and navigating a sprawling galaxy while trying to save the people of Earth, who are being kept under a planetary shield.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Should this also be cross posted to the Steam magazine? I would do it but I don't know how...or IF I can do it being on kbin...

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I remember when they started talking about "photo realistic" graphics...whatever that actually means.

guyrocket,

Another Sup Com fan.

Sup Com had a steep learning curve and a significant time commitment but it's a LOT of fun.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

You want to ONLY play with your group or are you also wanting to play with others? Or both/either?

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

This guarantees that I'll never even TRY their service.

Brilliant move, Netfilx. Be sure to mention the in-game ads in all your marketing materials too. I'm sure people will FLOCK to your service in DROVES.

A couple older games:

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. A very complex RTS with a pretty steep learning curve and advanced strategy. Awesome game but not casual.

Alien vs predator games are specifically 3 player (marine, alien , predator). Not sure if there is a modern version. Interesting because each of the 3 play differently.

Adventure on the Atari 2600. Pitfall on the same system.

Sinistar and Mr. Do! in the arcade.

Cool, did not know about U4 on GOG. Thanks for that.

And yes. I have MoonRing now. Someone posted it here on kbin/lemmy a couple/few weeks ago.

Edit: a word

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Did you play all those games?

I still have my old Atari 2600...and the TV I played it on.

There are also several Atari Flashback units around for retro gaming greatness.

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

Interesting. Which controller?

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Thanks!

I've been hearing that those Xbox controllers work very seamlessly with PCs. I'll probably buy one soon. I'll use it with MAME and some Steam games.

GTA 6’s Publisher Says Video Games Should Theoretically Be Priced At Dollars Per Hour (www.forbes.com) angielski

While Take-Two is riding high on their announcement that a GTA 6 trailer is coming, its CEO has some…interesting ideas on how much video games could cost, part of a contingent of executives that believe games are underpriced, given their cost, length or some combination of the two.

I am curious which indie titles you would recommend.

guyrocket,

He didn't say it but he wants you to RENT software not OWN it. Make no mistake, this would be BAD for consumers.

Tower defense and strategy in general.

I'm going to pick 3 different platforms:

Arcade machine: Mr. Do!
PC: CSGO
Atari 2600: Asteroids

guyrocket,

I have Dorfromantik and play it occasionally. It is very relaxing, which can be nice. And very, very simple. So simple that I sort of hesitate to call it a game. There is some sort of scoring, depending on the mode you play. But I always pretty much ignored the scoring and didn't even want to try to understand how it worked. It is fun just to make your little town, forest, river, train track, etc. So it is more like model railroading to me than a videogame. But highly structured and guided model railroading.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Correct

Does UO still exist?

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Back in the day, around the time of CS 1.6, some co-worker friends and I would have LAN parties. This was when everyone still had CRT monitors so we had to be careful not to trip circuit breakers.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Amazing that it is still up. I might try it.

guyrocket, (edited )
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I went on a binge with that game recently. It is amazingly deep, I never got near all the possible ways to play. I was mostly enjoying getting my ass kicked by the computer in multiplayer.

Fun game. I'll probably get back to it eventually. Seems like it will be around forever.

ETA: There's a pretty large AOE2 community on Reddit (still? IDK?) and frequent vids on YT. I remember some very detailed analysis vids on YT when updates came out. And competitive is still a thing too.

Rogue Tower - Steam description: Rogue Tower is a tower defense game with roguelike elements and a continuously expanding path which you can influence. Unlock, build, upgrade, expand, defend.

I've enjoyed unlocking all the cards and completing the 1-path (simpler) mode. Now I'm working on 2/3/4 path modes and finding them much more difficult. Uncovering levels of strategy I didn't know existed in this game after simpler mode. Surprisingly complex for a tower defense and very interesting.

Also, CS2. Still fun to shoot people in the head.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I am also uncertain but it does seem better than the old 2 layer/level system. I don't like limiting the choices but I do tend to only use a few weapons.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Cool. I've got it now.

I played a whole lot of Ultima IV many years ago on my Commode 64 and this has a similar look and feel.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Commode 64 = Commodore 64

A very old joke...

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Do people like PC Gamer? I was a little surprised when I found out they're still around. I used to get the print magazine with demo CDs.

guyrocket, (edited )
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I am playing now. Looks great. Just shot through smoke which was cool.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

There is a kick option, yes.

Just use a name like noob be gentle. I hate it when ppl kick in casual because someone plays badly.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I appreciate that many older games are still available on Steam either "maintained" as in the article or "remastered". Someday soon I will buy Total Annihilation...again...on Steam this time.

But I do not understand why games are seen as disposable, temporary media. Sure the latest titles are flashy but there are plenty of fucking awesome older games that are still fun to play. And as physical media disappears it becomes much more important for the gaming industry to stop pulling the ladder up behind themselves. History matters. Old <> bad.

There should be an equivalent to the classic rock stations for video games. I greatly appreciate the efforts of the MAME, archive.org and Mr. Lee to keep the classics alive.

hardware: use TV as a monitor?

Hi all My kid will get a gaming pc soon. I can’t swallow the cost of a whole setup at the moment. I’m thinking of getting a good motherboard with a decent second hand graphics card (a colleague I trust can find me one). And over time upgrade where needed. For monitor I would be using my TV....

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

They were selling refurbed Steam Decks recently too so you can get an even better price.
