Consoles have just been proprietary PCs since the Xbox 360. It’s a wonder they’ve lasted this long.

Still crossing my fingers and waiting for Steam Machines 😔

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

If you have Steam on your pc, you have a steam machine

You obviously don’t understand what those words mean.

I have a Steam Machine. But many many more would have them if Valve sold them directly.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar
  1. A Steam Machine runs SteamOS
  2. SteamOS does not, at any time, require a mouse or keyboard
  3. Gamescope
helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

No, what you suggested was:

If you have Steam on your pc, you have a steam machine.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That’s not what it is though LOL

I’ve already explained to you what it is LOL

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I’m getting a sense that there are other steps that could have been taken to prevent this tragedy aside from this video game that features guns.

Do you ever get the sense that it’s possible for more than 1 thing to contribute to an event?

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Why all the salt?

Because we’re all completely fed up with having shitty AI jammed down our throats. It’s nothing but a shitty marketing buzzword.

AI has its place, but it is abundantly obvious to anyone who has seen or experienced these characters that this ain’t it

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Then start it in experimental games. There’s no reason to have garbage AI in production games in order to improve it. Make it functional, then deploy it…

Can somebody explain why game makers don't start their own companies together? angielski

It seems like every other week a game studio is massively laying off employees; sometimes after years of development. What I’m reading is that it’s a quick way to lower expenses and pad the investors’ pockets, flooding the market with developers and reducing their value, to then hire them back a few months later at lower...

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

what’s holding back gamedevs from banding together to either unionize or start their own companies

Same thing as any other business: money.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

They do. There are plenty of indie Devs.

Exactly. In fact, there are so many indie Devs that it’s nigh-impossible to break through the massive numbers of them. Occasionally there are breakthroughs like Stardew Valley, Hades, Vampires, etc.

On the other hand, you partner with a company like Microsoft or Sony and you’re basically guaranteed success. They put up all the capital to make sure you make it to release (albeit probably a rushed, half-baked one that you just fix later because why not). Even if your game blows ass and is completely broken, full of DRM, microtransactions and ads, gamers still buy that shit up.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I feel like a community manager’s job is to represent the company’s interests to some degree.

I mean, I think he was. All he did was show the community how to communicate their feelings to Sony. He tried to save them from themselves.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I mean there are certainly benefits…

I would argue modern games are much more fun when their publishers aren’t trying to explore new ways to fuck you (which seems to be always).

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Would be a waste of time. Very few people would play offline co-op.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

bug-ridden experiences

That’s one of the best parts of the game though.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Other games have functional crossplay without it.

As does HD2…

@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I should be surprised that a bunch of nerds are fixing game-breaking updates in their spare time that were created by a multi-billion dollar corporation, but I’m not, at all.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

This is the way YouTube likes it, unfortunately

Game designer created a Playdate game to pop the question to the love of his life (beehaw.org) angielski

Game designer Aaron (Pikaaroon) today showcased how he built a game to propose to his partner. Having previously worked on Sea of Thieves and Warcraft III: Reforged, he’s no stranger to creating colossal playable experiences. For this incredibly important moment in his life, though, he chose to work with the Playdate. Which I...

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

“No Steve, stop trying to always get me to play your stupid video games!”

That’s how that would have worked out for me.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Blizzard has not produced a good game since Overwatch 2

I think you meant Overwatch. O2 seems universally hated. Rated “overwhelming negative” (17%) on Steam.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I think the concept of “Pay what you want.” is a very friendly approach to this.

Very “friendly” but not even a little profitable.

You would have to at least have a base minimum purchase price and then accept tips on top.

And to be honest, I’d be all for that. But there’s no way any distribution platform would allow that. They want their cut of every dollar.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

No doubt. Same with CS.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You’re entitled to your opinion, but it was a very popular and well-loved game by many. O2? Not so much.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Greed.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Not really true. While there are lots of factors in how profitable a game is, the biggest one is marketing. Regardless of how good it is. Brand name recognition. Like any other industry. It’s why games like CoD and Assassin’s Creed are ridden the fuck to death despite continuously getting worse.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Hmm, you make a convincing argument…

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

What exactly is it that needs to be “fixed”?

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I don’t necessarily have a problem with advertising in general. I kinda hate that too. What I have a problem with is super invasive advertising where it collects a monumental amount of personal information, maliciously and often without your consent, to target ads for specific products.

And anyone who says they’re not doing it, I don’t believe them anymore.

Roku is capturing everything that’s on your TV and processing it as personal data.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It’s when they fill it full of mtx and drag every aspect of the game except the enjoyment out for as long as possible to try and convince you to buy shit to make it actually enjoyable after you’ve already paid full price.

You’re confused. Those are the profitable ones.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I mean, it’s a legitimate question:

What is addiction, and how does it differ from just “really entertaining”?

I’ve got several thousand hours in Rocket League but I wouldn’t say that I’m addicted to it.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Infinite scrolling is a very simple example

Have to strongly disagree. Having to constantly reload entire pages of content is incredibly annoying. The only reason it makes people want to quit is because it’s annoying.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I didn’t say or imply that it was invalid.

The fact that you chose that specific example, one that I think is plainly wrong, just goes to show that the discussion is not as simple as you or other people make it out to be, and that any regulation around this will most certainly ensure that future games are shittier.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I dont like you stating things as if they were an objective truth.

You’re the only one doing that.

But it is a retention method and not just a QoL feature

So you agree that it’s both?

@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Raskin claims his intention was to create the most seamless experience possible for users

And it worked 🤷

You’re making my point for me.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I give exactly zero fucks about downvotes

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Control. DmC.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

MGSV bored me to death. I think I watched 10 minutes of cutscenes, got bored of watching a game, and then never touched it again.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

What’s not to like? Super cool main character with telekinetic and space gun abilities. Explosions like crazy. Regular upgrades. Not too complicated. Lots of exploring. Plenty of storyline, but not too much. Intriguing characters. “Open world”, but with a mostly clear sense of direction.

Probably one of my fave games of all time. Even though I hated Alan Wake.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I doubt the settlement amount came close to what the legal fees would have cost. They knew they were going to lose.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Okay

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You’re not saying anything I haven’t already addressed in the comment you replied to. The Yuzu settlement was $2.4M. That’s more than enough to cover a good attorney’s fees for several years.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Yes, it’s really an emulator. It’s Yuzu. SURPRISE!
