bionicjoey,

Rimworld (with all the mods (regular Rimworld doesn’t crack the top 3 IMO))

Portal 2

Outer Wilds

bionicjoey,

I suspect 4K is the biggest killer. Most YouTubers aren’t playing at that resolution.

GhostCowboy76, do gaming angielski
@GhostCowboy76@mastodon.social avatar

@gaming anybody know much about Dwarf Fortress? Having trouble with stairs and digging out areas.

bionicjoey,

Have you tried following the guides on the dwarf fortress wiki?

bionicjoey,

The noob guides on that wiki are the best way of getting into it.

bionicjoey,

Weird that the author includes ESO. That’s an outsource game using Bethesda’s IP. They might as well include Fallout NV (which would of course top the list if it were included)

bionicjoey,

“Wait so how many companies are there in the world now?”

“Nine.”

bionicjoey,

As far as I’m concerned, it’s just going to be a Stellaris mod with more targeted flavour and a preset starting position, like CK or various other PDX games. I see this as an absolute win. It’s not like it will invalidate Stellaris, it’s building upon it.

bionicjoey,

I mean… I’m gonna. And I just started watching ST this year.

(Now former?) Telltale employee: "This is a sore subject, but I feel it necessary to add to the gaming layoff news: Telltale laid most of us off early September. Status of TWAU2, I can't say (NDA)." (twitter.com) angielski

have not seen this picked up in gaming media yet, but i would assume it’s forthcoming if this is accurate (which i see no reason to believe otherwise)....

bionicjoey,

They should fund their games through Kickstarter. They are apparently not going to achieve commercial success, but I’d happily pledge to help pay for a sequel to TWAU or TFTB

bionicjoey,

Ever since the Steam Deck, I haven’t really felt the need to give Nintendo another penny. Valve made a better Nintendo console than Nintendo, and with the 3rd party emulator integration, it feels like a native experience.

bionicjoey,

Same. I remember beating the game and then finding out that there are multiple campaign missions. And I was like “no thanks, once is enough”

bionicjoey,

My favourite OpenTTD gameplay video is the Valefisk video where he invites his Patreon supporters to play a game with him and his friends and then ruins their day by basically starting the server early so that his corp already has more money than the other players.

bionicjoey,

I remember playing the shit out of Alien Swarm back when it came out over a decade ago. It showed a ton of promise. It’s a shame they haven’t really fleshed it out since then.

bionicjoey, (edited )

Sounds a bit like State of Decay. Or maybe Surviving The Aftermath

bionicjoey,

A hacking sim like Uplink, but with a less rigid story and a more open world. Also with simulated bash that allows for some scripting

bionicjoey,

How would that be better than procedural generation? AI wouldn’t be able to invent new game elements, since they still need to be coded in

bionicjoey,

“Subnautica in space” as in “outer space” or “on an alien planet”? Because outer space is kinda empty. Probably wouldn’t make for as lively a backdrop as under an ocean

bionicjoey,

Rimworld with the starship mod?

bionicjoey,

If you get a spaceship and can just go wherever, that sounds to me exactly like NMS. I think part of what makes Subnautica what it is is the constrained resources of the environment, and that feeling of being stranded. NMS lets you just bum around space forever, which is fun, but you don’t really feel that need for survival like you do in Subnautica.

bionicjoey,

You clearly misunderstand both how language models work, and how procedural generation works. Procedural generation is as “random and unexpected” as you want to make it.

bionicjoey,

Bioshock, System Shock, and Dishonoured are also examples.

bionicjoey,

Massively disappointed to this day that Adult Swim never picked up the TF2 show for a full series.

Wait, was this ever a real possibility?

bionicjoey,

User reviews tend to be far more reliable than professional critics. Critics have so much incentive to go against the orthodoxy, there’s no trust with them. The big review sites like IGN are meaningless to me. The numbers have also gotten inflated to the point of meaninglessness. Like I don’t think there are very many games I would describe as “10/10, perfect”, yet that is a common score from reviews sites for any new game.

Sometimes there will be specific critics whose reviews I trust, but almost always those come with a lot of examples of actual gameplay. Like, I used to really enjoy TotalBiscuit’s reviews (rip), but he always published his review as a video where you could see exactly how something looked when he talked about it. He wasn’t trying to tell you if a game was good or bad, he was simply telling you “what is it?” And “what do I like about it?” Then you could decide for yourself if you thought you would like it too.

Should I stick with The Outer Wilds? (EDIT: yes) angielski

I’ve read a ton of good things about this game, so I started it this week. I’m a couple of hours in now, but all I’m doing is floating around in the little space ship so far, and respawning every so often when I do something dumb....

bionicjoey, (edited )

It sounds like you keep dying early on in your runs, which might be keeping you from seeing the main thing that is going on in the game.

Very Minor SpoilerThe sun is dying and is about to go supernova, you will die in about 20 minutes, even if you don’t get yourself killed via dumbness. Your job is to figure out why you keep respawning, why you get to keep your memories when you respawn, what is causing the sun to go nova, and how to stop it.

You should primarily be using the console inside your ship, which keeps track of the web of information you’ve already learned and helps you figure out where to go next. A lot of the game is using the translator to read ancient writing, so if that’s not your thing it may just not be for you.

bionicjoey,

You haven’t visited the ruins on the attlerock it sounds like. That should probably be your next step. They are on the other side of the moon from the whistling guy.

bionicjoey,

Well, OP was talking about putting the game down, in which case they never would have seen it anyway. I’d rather someone know it’s coming and stick with the game than not know about it and stop playing

bionicjoey,

Don’t forget how far they’ve advanced Linux gaming and hardware

Dragon's Dogma 2 brings back all the joy of Capcom's 2012 cult hit with few real changes (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

Dragon's Dogma was the action-RPG for people who wanted to play alone, but didn't want to feel alone. By far its most charming feature was the Pawn system, whereby you'd create an AI-controlled sidekick and hire two others, shared online by other players, to accompany you on your journey through a fantasy wilderness of...

bionicjoey,

Even in numbers, a weakling is a weakling still!

bionicjoey,

This reminds me of the WOTC OGL debacle. They walked back the retroactive license change that they knew probably wouldn’t have held up in courts, but they maintained that they could have retroactively revoked the license. Which of course just nuked a lot of the goodwill they had with 3rd party developers.

bionicjoey,

Holy shit, what if Cave was based on Gabe

bionicjoey,

Here’s hoping they never go public and GabeN lives forever. Imagine the horror if they started being driven by a Board of Directors instead of a loveable fat guy with a beard.

bionicjoey,

Me too. I have this terrible fear that Valve will rapidly turn evil without him at the helm. I hope he has done some succession planning…

bionicjoey,

It’s probably BS that his mentality toward anything has substantially changed.

bionicjoey,

How is it a monopoly when mediawiki is FOSS? Lots of fan wikis use that instead.

bionicjoey,

UESP is such a gem

bionicjoey,

Yeah I think hosting is the thing that they’ve captured, far more than the notion of a domain-specific wiki. Of course, there’s nothing stopping an aspiring wiki admin from hosting on a platform that isn’t targeted at game wikis.

bionicjoey,

If there’s an ownership dispute between the creator of the thing and the people who sell it, I’m always gonna side with the person who created the thing. Publishers are a cancer.

bionicjoey, (edited )

From what I’ve seen and heard, Starfield is on par with Fallout 3. I can’t imagine being upset about that. Fallout 3 is great. Seems like some people wanted it to be No Man’s Sky + Star Citizen + Cyberpunk and like… no, it’s a Bethesda game. You know what that means already. I’m looking forward to picking it up and playing it, as I’ve always enjoyed their games for the weird sandboxes that they are.

Proprietary software A is bad. Long live proprietary software B!

Unity, remind yourselves that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer

bionicjoey,

The nice thing about a company being run by evil people is that you can rely on them to eventually do something overtly evil, and then everyone will be aware they are evil.

The next Sims game will be free-to-play with paid DLC (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

The next Sims game currently goes under the name Project Rene rather than The Sims 5, but that aside, we know a growing amount about EA Maxis' next social simulation. During today's latest Behind The Sims community update, they shared more, including the news that the next entry in the series would be free-to-play and without...

bionicjoey,

Good thing there’s that spiritual successor (paralives) coming down the pike

bionicjoey,

Agreed. Working is the worst part of the Sims. They make you just fucking sit there for all that time staring at the outside of a building
