GrayBackgroundMusic,

Spend a year on Moonstone Island tending to your farm, crafting potions, exploring over 100 islands in the sky, taming spirits, unearthing hidden temples, making friends, or having a sweet romance — play your way in our adorable, upcoming adventure life-sim!

High magic stardew valley? Looks really neat! I like the look of the card battles, too.

Alternative sources for the No Pronouns mod for Starfield (kbin.social) angielski

In light of Nexus Mods and Mod DB banning the No Pronouns mod for Starfield, I figured I would look around for alternative sources and collect them in one place for others' convenience. This seems like a good place to put them....

GrayBackgroundMusic,

The right calls people snowflakes and then loses their mind when someone offers an option for pronouns. An option. You can still pick cis pronouns. Gtf outta here.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Thanks!

GrayBackgroundMusic,

It definitely has. Gabe links old comics on Twitter sometimes and it gives a really great comparison to how his style has changed.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

“remake” is generous of the titling editor. That’s a tech demo or a mechanic demo. Still good, though. The seamless transitions are nice.

What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending? angielski

The thought came to mind after reading a recent post about Baldurs Gate 3 here but it reminded me of the Japense only PSX game Mizzurna Falls where if you don’t perform a certain action early in the game you are prevented from getting a true ending. While this might not be a traditional soft lock because you can still progress...

GrayBackgroundMusic, (edited )

Xmen on Sega genesis. At one point you have to literally reset the console. I was 10 and didn’t understand that’s what it was telling me to do. No game had ever done that, and prof x was breaking the 4th wall telling the player to do that. The game never broke the 4th wall otherwise. I didn’t understand until a decade later when I read it on some listicle.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

That was amazing. Thank you for linking it.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Good analogy to WoW. I’m a pretty serious crafter and it’s only added headache. I don’t care for it there or here.

Looking for games with unique core mechanics

I’m requesting for recommendations for games that stand out from the rest in their genre, and not in the sense of being the best game in that niche but actually bringing something new and innovative to the table. I’ve not had much experience in gaming, but I have a few games to give you a hint on what I am talking about:...

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Great soundtrack too

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Factorio - its a logistics rts but the pollution mechanic is different. Instead of just gather resources to build things which build bigger things, you also make pollution as a side effect. This feeds the native monsters and also evolves them. Managing your pollution cloud is a strategy. That or build massive defensives for when they come to eat you.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

I don’t want annual expansions. I want good ones, no matter how long they take. Stop rushing shit. I miss “soon ™” Blizzard.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

It was good at release, but it’s been mediocre at best, garbage at worst, since.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

How’s Krastorio vs AngelBob? I keep trying AngelBob but it’s so tedious to make progress that I lose interest after a few hours.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Thanks, I’ll give it a try.

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun? (kbin.cafe) angielski

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Myst. I know, I know. One of the hallmarks of video games. I hated it. I like games that give you a path and let you figure it out. I’ve hundreds of hours into Factorio and it’s kin. Portal! A puzzle game, Portal gives you A and Z and lets you figure out how to get there. Myst doesn’t do ANYTHING. Nothing was obvious to me. I didn’t understand where the A to Z was. I couldn’t find A, Z, or any of the other steps. None of it clicked. Years ago, I watched some parts of walk throughs and I did not understand how I was supposed to know the things they were doing. None of it made any sense to me.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

I’m waiting until it’s out of early access. I don’t have time these days to beta test games.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

I’ll believe it when I see it. I liked pre-season, launch stuff. I didn’t like the balance patch or S1.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Whoa. That world design is very reminiscent of Secret of Mana, which I loooove.

In its first week, Immortals of Aveum had a peak count of just 751 players on Steam. (steamdb.info) angielski

After 5 years in development and heavily pushing Unreal Engine 5 technologies, Immortals of Aveum was met with a whopping 751 player peak. For reference, Forspoken was considered a flop but still had over 12,000 players peak total. This may be the biggest flop of the year.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Went to the steam page. I had no idea what this game was. Never heard of it and the title doesn’t really do anything for me. So, a minus there. Reviews: Mixed. Minus there. The hero is named Jack and it’s high fantasy. That is the most generic name. Minus there. He looks like every other cookie cutter generic white guy main character. The only time he looks different than a movie star clone is the last second of the trailer. Nothing positive there. The hip hop music with high fantasy is not a good mix, IMO. It’s published by EA. Minus there. The dialog is very “I’m so edgy with my quips.” Minus there.

The villain designs are pretty good. The cinematic trailer is well done.

Reviews say it’s really demanding on hardware. Minus there.

Tons of negatives, a few neutrals, one or two positives. Yeah, this ain’t worth it.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Never, ever take Grummz (former blizz dev who made the comment) seriously. He is a complete garbage can of a human.

Doing things in games because it simple felt good. angielski

I’ve been thinking about the PS1 game ‘Driver’ a lot recently. It’s a game I spent a lot of time on during my youth, and whilst I’m sure it doesn’t hold up some 20 years later, it was still a highlight from my ‘gaming youth’....

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Risk of Rain 2: Get 5 to 10 movement items and just zoooooooom around.

Deep Rock Galactic: Drill thru the walls even when it’s not the best idea, because I just like the idea of destructible terrain and navigating in 3d.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Same. It’s very broad, but not very deep. I’m generally a deep-system type gamer. Gimme Factorio or it’s kin. I really get frustrated with NMS’s implementation of logistics and stuff. I just gave up. It’s an explorer’s game and I’m not an explorer type.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Blech. Another military worshipping, boot licker clone. Whatever.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Never heard of Escape Simulator, but looks like I’m about to give it a shot. Portal is literally top 5 game for me.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

I’m frustrated by the current largely-unethical state of the games industry

It’s the fate of any large enough company in a capitalist system. Greed creates/incentivizes this behavior and then rewards it. Microtransactions and dark patterns wouldn’t exist if they didn’t work. Greedy people know this and the rest of us are plagued by them.

What are some game genres / styles you like that aren't being made anymore, or are being mde but not very often? angielski

For me it’s first person puzzle games. I can think of maybe a dozen off the top of my head that came out in the last decade. I especially enjoy when they’re open world. The ability to just quit a puzzle that’s stumped you and go try something else for a little bit is incredibly refreshing.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Turn based strategy. As others have said, RTS’es, as well, but TBS. Yes, Civ series isn’t dead, but everything else seems to be. Master of Magic (1994) is literally one of my favorite games of all time (none of the sequels or successors measure up). Colonization, also 1994, (warning, MANY ethical issues) had a great logistic and economic model… (Just ignore eeeeeeverything about the white-washing of history/slavery/indentured servitude/genocide.) Alpha Centauri. Maybe I’m just old.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

limited inventories are kind of abused currently and that unlimited inventory systems would give more player choices.

In some sense that’s correct. You’d have more options, but you wouldn’t take them. Having a limited inventory forces you to make choices. Yes, you can use that scroll/potion/whatever, because you’re gonna run out of room, so feel free. On the other hand, I think that many devs don’t consider inventory management enough! I think that it’s often an afterthought and could use more dev attention.

What game mechanics do you love and hate?

Hate: instakills. Diablo 4 and Risk of Rain 2 are my current games that have this. ROR2 is not as bad, you can prevent this by getting enough defensive items. D4 is worse about this. You can be chewing thru trash mobs just fine but get to a boss and immediately die. There’s no ramp up to this.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

I do. Thanks! I didn’t even realize there were mods.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Oxygen Not Included

2nd vote for ONI. Many hundred hours in it.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Prison Architect.

Space Haven, though it’s EA.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

That is amazing!

Reminds me of the Reboot version. youtu.be/k7SqlwATPeI?t=32

Which reminds me I’m old, lol.

What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

Have you ever played a game and wondered what if you could do something that it doesn’t really allow you to do, for example being able to move around blocks in Minecraft fluidly instead of in sectors, edit the world in Hogwarts legacy with spells, be able to fly in a world like Elden Ring or Elder Scrolls with epic sky...

GrayBackgroundMusic,

I want Master of Magic but modern. I want all the same style of gameplay (squares, not hexes) with similar art style (not grimdark browns) but uprez to modern resolutions (still pixel, but tiiiiny ones). I don’t think turn based strategy with tactical combat is popular enough right now to justify it.

I want World of Warcraft but it’s an actual role playing game. It’s not. It’s got roller coaster dungeons and the main characters are putting on a stage play, not actually there. They hide main characters when they’re not needed or inconvenient. There are so many Plot-By-Stupid writing mistakes. I don’t know if it’s possible to create a world that actually seems plausible (not realistic, but plausible). I want to love the story of Warcraft again, but it’s been years.

I want a game that doesn’t get corrupted by rich executives trying to squeeze every last dime out of people, but has the fidelity that large resources allow. I hate microtransactions, even if I don’t use them. I play games to get out of the world and its disparity of incomes and being poor. People running around with things I’ll never buy just reminds me that rich people are there.

Stray really disappointed me. I want a real cat game.

Just an open world survival game, only you’re a cat, dealing with regular cat problems. You have to hunt, avoid larger animals, compete with other cats, figure out which humans are dangerous and which will give you treats, judiciously spray things to maintain your territory, maybe mate and reproduce (your sex and fertility...
