Yes. It's hyper super bestest ever effective. There are unfortunately absolutely no way around their rock solid implementation.

Can't you just open a new private tab or window for every video that you watch?

Kbin_space_program, (edited )

Absolutely you can. There are absolutely no other, easier ways to circumvent it and this is absolutely not a failed attempt at sarcasm at how laughable their malware attempt is.

Even the "endgame" one is laughably easy to circumvent. I'm not giving them any hints though because Fuck Google.

twena, w Has YouTube Blocked Your Adblocker Yet??

Not from US but my uBlock has a problem with YouTube since yesterday. It blocks the ad video but the sound of it is still audible.

mah,

twena,

JelloBrains,
@JelloBrains@kbin.social avatar

I followed this from Ublock's Reddit page, it's working for now.

Current anti-adblock status: Latest fixed (ID: 462a8d5d)*

Please, remember these 3 steps:

Force update all your filter lists (click uBO icon > ⚙ Dashboard button > Filter lists pane > 🕘 Purge all caches > 🔃 Update now)
Turn off all other extensions AND browser's built-in blockers
Remove all your current custom filters AND custom filter lists that you have enabled / added manually (Adguard lists...)
It might be quicker to make a backup of your config and restore to defaults before proceeding to step 1.

Fixing anti-adblock can cause ads slipped. If you see any ads slipped, please report back the EXACT URL and your country when accessing the URL so volunteers are able to investigate.

The filter lists can be updated multiple times a day, so please always do step 1 before reporting.

  • About the ID above, it's the ID of YouTube's script that's used for anti-adblock, you can monitor it via this link: https://pastefy.app/G1Txv5su/raw (top to bottom is oldest to latest). It means that the current fix is matched with the script with corresponding ID.

If the latest ID (the last line) does not match the current one written above, it means YT has updated the new one and it might cause anti-adblock again. If it matches and you still get anti-adblock, kindly check the 3 steps above. Thank you.

twena,

I will definitely try this. Thank you really

Their free VPN is good enough that I have not had to purchase their paid version, but I probably will anyway.

I mainly stick to x265 for the size. I’m not too snobby with quality and for the size its fine with me. I want to like AV1 but have issue with playback on some of my devices. Usually i just play locally off a HDD on xbox (Kodi) . This may not be an issue if/when I get a NAS. Not sure if there are issues with transcoding as I haven’t really looked into it

Coelacanthus, w Whats your preferred codec?

VP9 for video and FLAC for audio. Avoid AV1 because my GPU can’t decode AV1.

ArugulaZ, w My 2tb jellyfin server with a disney collection go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
@ArugulaZ@kbin.social avatar

Jellyfin? What is that, some computer based television network you populate and schedule yourself? Because I totally would want that. That would rule.

Whom,

It’s a FOSS alternative to Plex, if you’re familiar with that. Less like a tv channel, more like a streaming service you populate yourself.

lemann,

more like a streaming service you populate yourself.

As a long time Plex uset who loves the ease of use of Plex, is it for me? Also there probably aren’t apps on that many devices? My main concern is Android TV and the Tizen thing by Samsung.

Xelnoc,
@Xelnoc@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The advantages ofjellyfin are mainly its open source nature, and lack of needing to pay to unlock features such as downloads. It may be a little more effort to set up but still isn’t too difficult. Once set up, it works pretty much flawlessly, except for the occasional hiccup which can be resolved pretty easily.

It has an official app available for android TV, which is in the store, and as for Tizen OS, there is an official app (on their github), however it is somewhat more difficult to install from what i’ve seen.

If you want to check availability, there is a list of clients at jellyfin.org/downloads/clients/all/

aldalire,

yeah, i switched over to jellyfin from plex after i hit a paywall on plex. They wanted me to pay to watch my 4k mission impossible (1996) movie. Afterwards, i’m like “fuck nah,” literally the reason why i torrent was to not pay for shizzle

One time payment or a subscription?

rockhandle,
@rockhandle@lemm.ee avatar

It lacks some of the functions found in plex, most notably the sync feature. That being said, it’s still a very good free alternative to plex. It does run on android tv

chumbaz,

I enjoy plex but the sync feature being missing isn’t saying much. It barely works on plex too. 😝

grue,

Jellyfin is to Plex as Lemmy is to Reddit.

balderdash9,

A lot of people haven’t even heard of it? lol

mhz,

Android is no problem at all, Tizen however is a mistake I will never do again. I have a MU7000 samsung TV (2017 model), it has plex (came free in its store) but no emby (emby is another option that is mostly open source) or jellyfin (Emby fork that is fully open source). I had an Intel NUC5 celeron based that acted as a server, the cpu was pretty efficient (6w) but it was not powerful enough for transcoding (converting the video to something the tv can play)

My experience with my Samsung TV.

Plex: Can direct play almost anything (stream to the tv without converting the video). I’m a non-native english japanese anime fan who needs subtitles all the time. The problem is that plex will turn to transcoding if subtitles are on and my server was not powerful enough to handle fluent transcoded stream.

Emby: it is not in the tizen store (at least for my tv), fortunately the emby team release a tizen binary that can be installed through a USB thumb drive. Now emby works pretty good with and withouth subtitles. It does not have ads (for premium subscription) on android but it does have a once every 24h add in the Tizen version. Not a big deal but just remember you are more likely to be treaded a 2nd class consumer for having a damn Tizen TV.

Jellyfin: Not available on Samsung store, I had to enable devlopper mod on my tv and install Tizen studio with CLI on my pc to compile Jellyfin for my TV, then install it through Tizen CLI only to be surprised by how sluggish it worked, the UI was very unoptimized which is natural as it was not supporting my tv to begin with. Half my remote (samsung one remote black version) did not work so I decided it was not worth it.

PhAzE,

I’ve used plex and emby, both are good but plex is easier to setup and share, and has apps everywhere. Emby is a close second, but jellyfin isnt there yet imo, with apps and availability of those apps on everything.

devdad,

Unsure if your asking seriously (if not, whooosh to me), but it’s an open source alternative to Plex.

Plex is a media server that you run to host your TV shows and movies. Think of a self-hosted Netflix.

Firefox + UBO and ReVanced still working rn.

Virual, w Whats your preferred codec?

HEVC 10 bit in order to reduce banding for animation, especially during dark scenes. I know H264 Hi10 exists, but it has poor hardware support, so using HEVC 10 bit is the best option (I don’t own a single streaming device that supports HW accelerated Hi10, besides my PC). Also, an added benefit is reduced file size. I find that doing my own encodes is very rarely worth it, but when I do, I use FFmpeg in the CLI and not tdarr.

nix,
@nix@merv.news avatar

Banding?

Virual,

Banding is that annoying color gradient you see sometimes in dark scenes.

Example

On the left is 8 bit and on the right is 10 bit.

argv_minus_one,

Hold up. That entire image is 8-bit. It’s a JPEG image. JPEG can’t encode more than 8 bits per channel. Nor can most displays, including mine, display more than 8 bits per channel. And yet the left half of your image exhibits far worse banding than the right half.

The left half looks more like 5 bits per channel rather than 8. You’d see that kind of banding in gradients back in the days of Windows 3.1, when 16-bit color was common. (16-bit color uses 5 bits each for red and blue, and 6 bits for green.)

Virual,

It’s an exaggerated example to demonstrate the concept of banding more clearly, not a technical breakdown.

argv_minus_one,

Then it should be marked as such. It’s highly misleading to anyone who doesn’t know better. Again, you’re demonstrating the difference between 5-bit and 8-bit color, not the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit color.

Virual,

The purpose of the comment is to demonstrate banding. The only reason I marked it in bits is to show how banding can be reduced in video encodes by increasing the bit depth, not the specifics depths itself, it’s not a technical write-up.

argv_minus_one, w Whats your preferred codec?

One that’s not patent encumbered.

tombuben, w Proton VPN. How good is it?

Proton is a great company with a pretty good record, but I wouldn’t recommend them for passwords when Bitwarden exists. Proton only open-sources their clients, and for service based offerings like mail or VPN I don’t care about the servers being open-source, but for password management I want to be able to host my own (making sure that self-hosted mail gets properly received by Gmail is pain and self-hosting a huge VPN network is basically impossible).
