They’re doing something with F-Zero!!! 😱

It’s a Battle Royale and it requires NSO to play which I refuse to pay for. 😐

Otherwise I was happy to see TTYD is coming back! I really have to play the original again, I haven’t since it originally released…

@TallonMetroid@lemmy.world avatar

Was hoping to get Capt Falcon in Mario Kart to go with the Blue Falcon kart, especially since I also refuse to get a subscription, but alas. Still, it’s nice to see any new F-zero for the first time in… wow, 20 years.

kibiz0r,

Why do you refuse to pay for NSO?

Kecessa,

Because I find it insulting to have to pay for services that are free on PC, especially when we’re talking about being able to play multiplayer games using a peer to peer connection or the ability to play some older games (amongst other things).

kibiz0r,

I feel ya, but consoles are a different beast.

Reasonable people can debate how the pricing should be structured, especially when it comes to online functionality that doesn’t even take a penny of Nintendo’s server budget…

But I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect zero cost at all, when:

  • Console manufacturers have an unavoidable incentive to sell hardware at a loss (even without factoring in the platforming costs+risks) and make up for it in software sales and add-on services
  • …and they suffer the reputation hit if any of their offerings are not up to par, in a way that e.g. Windows does not, so they have an unavoidable interest in monitoring and triaging issues with games
  • …and networked components tend to be the most sensitive and most traceable part of any software system
  • …and scaling issues tend to be a cross-cutting concern that a third-party vendor who isn’t intimately familiar with the client codebase can affordably help with

It’s just part of the deal you make when you sign up for a walled garden. You get certain guarantees, but only if you pay for the relevant package. You can’t have it both ways – getting the benefit of first-party backing while enjoying the freedom of a purely third-party environment. It’s like a cruise ship that doesn’t let you bring your own alcohol.

Kecessa,

Windows doesn’t offer the service that connects Counter Strike players together, Valve does, and they do it for free and they offer it for first and third party games and they suffer the reputation hit if the service doesn’t work (possibly even worse because at least with consoles you potentially have a physical copy as a backup to play with, which isn’t a possibility with always online games on Steam).

Nintendo gets a cut on all software sold on their consoles, they get all profits from first party software, they don’t tend to be the manufacturer that sells at the biggest loss (if at a loss at all), but people are still defending their choice to lock basic functionalities behind a paywall…

Zoldyck,

Yearly NSO price is super super cheap.

Kecessa,

Weird mindset… you consider that it’s ok because it’s cheap? At what price is it not ok anymore?

It’s unacceptable to me that we have to pay for services that should be free and that we can’t own certain games because they’re locked behind a paywall.

Kelly,

On the other hand your could consider it paying for Fzero and just ignore the rest of the network. If that works for you then the problem is solved.

On the other hand if you are worried that you will never “own” the battle Royale game: that was never going to happen, it will die when the serves go dark no matter how they monitize. You might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Kecessa,

The ownership part applies to all retro games that I can’t purchase because they’re only available to NSO members, it’s not about f-zero specifically.

electrogamerman,

Just jail break your ns. The free games you get will pay for the nso subscription

Oh my… I gasped when I saw another Code, and gasped even more when they announced the sequel was included in the remake. Best day ever, I had kept my old Wii to play this game with my daughter but I won’t even need that anymore !

Super Mario RPG! That’s pretty hype to me.

Hoping by the end of this we get a shadow drop of Prime 2 remake and/or Prime 4 news

Not expecting anything for the Switch 2 as Nintendo wouldn’t compromise holiday sales. Just just regular Switch releases this year and early next year stuff.

F Zero X remake please. original was already 60fps, so upgraded graphics and the original soundtrack in full stereo and full 30 player online. Sounds good to me.

Give me Switch 2, please.

Grangle1,

Probably not gonna happen this time, but I predict an announcement early next year for release within the year.

Centillionaire,

I’m guessing January announcement and releases in April. Makes me wonder what games will be day one release? Metroid, a 3D Super Mario, but surely not a Zelda game. Unless it’s a remake of a game.

Grangle1,

I think instead of a new 3D Mario right away we’ll get a port of Wonder, especially if it’s not backwards compatible. If that’s the case, that BotW demo they supposedly showed off at Gamescom may be a hint at a BotW port, though why they would port BotW instead of TotK at this point would be beyond me, especially when BotW was a launch title for their previous console. A different Zelda remake may be a good bet, like an HD/4K version of one of the N64 Zeldas. I still think the new F-Zero may be saved as a launch title for the new console to show off the new hardware. Either way, they need a solid, brand new entry in one of their big franchises or something new and original (a “killer app”) to promote immediate adoption, especially if they’re apparently releasing so many good games to sunset their previous console. They can’t make the same mistakes in the launch lineup that they did with consoles like the GameCube and Wii U.

rbits,

No way they don’t have a new 3d mario for a launch title. It’s been 6 years since Odyssey. And they definitely need something like that for the launch. They obviously won’t have a new Zelda so Mario is pretty much the only thing they could do. Also maybe Metroid Prime 4, but Metroid hasn’t really been a system seller. Also maybe a bit too soon for a new Animal Crossing.

Brodude,

For sure they don’t want to ruin xmas sales. It would be very dumb to announce a new hardware before the end of the year.

Carighan, w Nintendo of America on Twitter: Tune in on Sept. 14 at 7 a.m. PT for a Nintendo Direct livestream featuring roughly 40 minutes of information focused on Nintendo Switch games releasing this winter.
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder, if the rumors about the Switch 2 are actually true - which so far I don’t think they are simply because it’s a Boy Who Cried Wolf thing by now - then at some point they ought to start firing up marketing for it. Remains to be seen whether anything official pops up in this, because by you’d think it would.

picandocodigo,
@picandocodigo@lemmy.world avatar

The good sign -to me- is if they’re still hyping up major Switch games so late in the game, it probably means whatever comes next will be backwards compatible.

Kiosade,

I mean i’m sure it’s reasonably far into the development by now. The only questions are, is it going to be backwards compatible with the Switch, and is it coming out next year?

bobdowl,
@bobdowl@lemmy.world avatar

They would never hurt their Christmas sales by announcing anything officially until the beginning of next year.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

I was thinking they could announced it and say it would be fully backward compatible, so it won’t effect their games sales, but it would still effect their hardware sales, so I guess you are right.

NewNewAccount,

They could drop the price of the Switch to $200 and grab up the people that have been on the fence due to price.

kae, w Nintendo of America on Twitter: Tune in on Sept. 14 at 7 a.m. PT for a Nintendo Direct livestream featuring roughly 40 minutes of information focused on Nintendo Switch games releasing this winter.

Considering at this point, I only really care about F-Zero and Star Fox’s languishing, as far as Nintendo’s catalogue is concerned; I’m just not going to hype. If something’s worth seeing in the direct, I’ll hear about it and watch it after the fact.

TheTim,

LOL well, they were both technically correct.

The best kind of correct?

Blackmist, w Nintendo has filed a patent for ‘smart fluid’ joysticks, perhaps to eliminate drift | VGC

That patent doesn’t sound like it’s to eliminate drift. Besides, how would you patent something that people already do and have a name for?

It sounds more like force feedback for sticks.

allywilson,

I bought it a month or so ago, and the interface for it I find genuinely bizaree. Like, I don’t understand half of what is being displayed on my screen. The menus are mental. I still don’t really know what my ‘goal’ is - it seems to change between gathering hearts to speak to Amy and getting keys or something.
