EmpiricalFlock, w Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director wants series vets and newbies alike to be surprised by its twist and turns, seeing the remake as more than 'just a callback'
@EmpiricalFlock@beehaw.org avatar

Oof. You’d think if they wanted to surprise people with twists and turns they’d just make a new game instead of altering the plot of a remake (unless I’m misunderstanding).

Bring dedicated servers back.
Can’t have persistent server capacity issues if I can throw my own hardware at it.
This also gets rid of match making, which is whatever. Just give me a server browser and I’ll find a few favorites and hang on those.
It can also keep working long after the companies give up on them too.

Arbiter,

Seriously, it’s also the only way to preserve the online game long after it’s stopped being profitable.

conciselyverbose,

This also gets rid of match making, which is whatever.

In the real world, probably.

But it doesn't actually have to. There's nothing stopping you from letting users add multiple matchmaking servers, and even adding some basic rules to queue up in multiple (eg: primary matchmaking for 30 seconds, if no signal indicating good progress towards a match, fall back to also joining server two, etc). It would take a little thought to the base server you provide to handle everything gracefully, but if your priority is actually to give your players the best chance to have a long term ability to form their own communities and play the game reliably instead of to maintain an iron grip to squeeze every penny out, you could do it.

WanderingPoltergeist, w Highly anticipated indie Sims 4 rival Paralives sets early access release window for 2025
@WanderingPoltergeist@kbin.social avatar

@mike591 I'm excited for this game because they've built up a lot of sensible gameplay elements so early on in development. The social system seems more interesting than The Sims 4, where you could become best friends and marry someone on the same day you met them (I've done this so often, even with conflicting personality traits). It takes both time and effort to befriend the other Paras! That is what I desire from a social sim, investing time into creating the story for my character and having that time feel meaningful.

Stating that all future content and expansions will be free even outside of early access is a powerful idea. I'm not sure how it'll pan out for them financially, but as long as the core game is good and runs well I think that the incredible wall of paid content in the Sims and that immediate feeling of "I'm not getting the whole thing" when considering only buying the base game is definitely something that's basically stopped me from moving on from Sims 3.

Why go to 4 if I have a content robust game already, and getting a similar amount of content there would cost a small fortune? If a well playing competitor arrives with one base game price and a promise that future content comes free, I think that could be a real foot in the door for this genre.

It really sounds like there will still be a required network connection even if you don’t pay monthly for it.

Which is still a deal breaker for me.

Much-needed clarifications from the dev:

Hello Subnauts,

A few of you noticed some information shared online by our publisher, KRAFTON 🕵

While some of the news is exciting, we’d like to clarify:

Early Access is not intended for release in 2024, but we plan to share a lot more information later this year!

In reference to “Games-as-a-Service,” we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription.

The game is not multiplayer-focused. Co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game. You’ll be able to enjoy the game as a single-player.

As always, we are so proud and incredibly grateful to have such a passionate and engaged community, who love the Subnautica games deeply.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for any news about our progress on the next game.

We’re so excited to show you what we’ve been working on and hope that you love it as much as we do.

– The Subnautica Team

They definitely shouldn't've used the term “Games-as-a-Service”

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

It doesn't sit right, why they would use that full well knowing what it actually entails?

This feels more like PR damage control, instead of just saying its not GaaS and the claims were a mistake.

Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription.

No DLC, no monthly paid “expansion” content packs?

A very specific set of no’s and a very clear yes to GaaS…

verysoft, (edited )

They haven't fucked us over so far with DLC, MTX or any bullshit with their previous entries, so no reason to believe they will do here, they are very open with their development and talking to the community. So until they actually screw us over, it's unfair to pretend we are being.

It just sounds like a miscommunication/misuse of the term by KRAFTON, Unknown Worlds then came out to clarify. We will just have to wait and see, we can get actually angry once we know there's going to be some bullshit involved.

The only current downside to the next Subnautica is that it's going to be built on UE5, I just hope they manage to avoid all the shortcuts.

WHYAREWEALLCAPS,

Shortcuts?

verysoft,

A lot of UE games are low performance or use shit features (like TAA). You can make something which "looks good" quickly with the engine and a lot of devs do just that instead of taking their time to tweak things for better performance or visual fidelity. So instead we get stuck with blurry messes.

grue,

It feels like the developer and the publisher not being on the same page to me.

olafurp,

Yeah it sounds like it would be a subscription and you’d have to subscribe to get updates.

@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

Well, they failed to answer one more huge question when it comes to GaaS... Is it always online DRM?

On console platforms like the Switch, I can play Subnautica offline anywhere, and though the second game is likely far outside the switch's capabilities, I think DRM model is an important thing to clarify when it comes to GaaS definition.

M1st3rM,

Thank you that really was a much needed clarification. I was really sad when I read the title

I really loved Subnautica, didn’t like Below Zero but am still playing Subnautica from time to time. I can’t even imagine how a game with such a great setting and story can become a gaas. I can get behind co-op, but isn’t the ultimate goal in that game to get back home?

verysoft, (edited )

It's not becoming GaaS, they just meant it will receive updates like the current ones did, was a mistake in wording.

I hope it's more like Subnautica and not Below Zero too, having a silent protagonist explore a world and uncover story was far more fun than full voice acted characters. Not the mention how broken the BZ story was and how the world never made you feel uneasy like the original did.

Yes I agree. Even the soundtrack wasn’t good anymore and don’t get me started about the ending :)

verysoft,

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/an-update-about-the-next-subnautica/ :)

I thought the soundtrack was good on it's own (I love Ben Prunty's music), but it did not fit the game.
The way the music and audio design in-general in the first game all fit together so well is what made half the experience.

And yeah...

This was a mistake in their wording, the next Subnautica will be like the others, they simple meant it will receive updates for a time after, just like the other ones did. There won't be any battle pass or mtx bullshit.
