Poiar, w Denuvo by Irdeto now registered as authorized Nintendo Switch™ middleware

Damn… I feel sorry for legitimate Switch owners.

Hopefully Nintendo will find that degrading the performance isn’t the way to sell more copies of a game.

mindbleach, w Nintendo Switch emulators Yuzu and Ryujinx can already run Red Dead Redemption on PC

Hilarious, after the tortuously long road Xenia took to get there.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Switch’s operating system is based on the OS from 3DS. The ARM architecture was already well documented and emulated. Tegra has documentation from NVidia.

With all that, making a Switch emulator was relatively “easy”. They took Citra, the 3DS emulator, and worked from there.

Xbox 360 is a different beast. Even its OS was only kinda Windows, so they couldn’t just take Wine and a PowerPC emulator and call it a day. Taking long is IMO not much of a surprise because of that.

mindbleach,

IIRC the original Xbox has even worse emulation, to this day, despite being infamously close to a stock PC.

What makes RDR’s emulation struggles noteworthy is that it’s a highly desirable game that still took ages to unfuck. Most nightmare cases for emulators seem to be random D-list titles. Pinball Fantasies on Game Boy had incomprehensible crashes, early and reliably, for no discernible reason. True Crime New York on Gamecube was a white whale for Dolphin despite being absolute garbage.

RDR was a huge deal for its own sake - and it ran bad, looked worse, and stayed that way for a while. Back in the day it was common for emulators to only work properly for big-name games. NESticle and SNES9X absolutely cheated to run major titles. Early N64 development was nothing but. So having this killer app refuse to work, year after year, was a lingering presence in people’s minds.

Finally getting it working, only to have a nearly painless alternative drop, is pretty goddang funny.

lamebox, (edited )

Aside from poorly documented hardware, one reason why Xbox emulation is in such an early state was simply lack of interest. The Xbox had a meager first-party library and what exclusives there were, were already available to play on every Xbox released ever since via back compat.

I think a more tragic case would be if MGS4 was ever re-released as part of the Master Collection ports. That game was designed from the ground up for PS3, and runs terrible even on the custom RPCS3 builds designed specifically for it.

Centillionaire,

This is the most crybaby thing to complain about. Reminds me of the reviews on Steam that are “I do not recommend” (this player has 3,432 hours logged)

ech, (edited )

The state of video games is wild to see. People will play a hundred hours of a game and say it’s lacking. Players expect endless content and it’s honestly unhealthy for gaming at large.

smeg,

It’s completely unnecessary as well. We are absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to video games, I pick up more for free than I have time to play, and with services like gamepass, offers like humble bundle, and the ever-present steam sales, there’s no reason to ever have to fork out big money for a game you feel you need to play a hundred hours in just to feel you’ve got your money’s worth. If you don’t like it after a few hours then just move on to one of the myriad games in your backlog and you’ll soon forget the boring one.

Someguy89, w Microsoft eyes closing its giant Activision Blizzard deal next week

Totally not a monopoly… 🙄

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

I’m concerned with the state of consolidation in the gaming space (and just about every other market, I might add) but I also find it hard to argue they’re a monopoly. They’re number three in the console space and thanks to Proton Microsoft’s de facto stranglehold on PC gaming OS’s is weaker than ever. I could see cloud gaming being a problem in the future but it’s such a nascent market who knows what will happen there.

illi,

thanks to Proton Microsoft’s de facto stranglehold on PC gaming OS’s is weaker than ever

Can you elaborate? I had to miss something…

Aggy,

I think consolidation creates many issues even if it isn't a full monopoly right now. Like making it easier for that full monopoly to show up later.

scottmeme, w Microsoft Plans to Close The Activision Blizzard Acquisition Next Week, Says Report

This is really bad news for the games industry that Microsoft is a monster.

scottmeme,

What do you mean. They own a monopolistic amount of studios. Adding more to that is only going to make things worse.

ryathal,

I mean the industry is already a cesspool. The consolidation is troubling from a failure of regulators. The games Industry deserves what it gets here though.

Overall I don’t agree with that, but I do agree they’re better than ActiBlizz. You’d have to blast down into bedrock to get lower than Bobby Kotick

andxz,

Microsoft still support AoE2 after all these years, while Activision more or less fucked the SC2 proscene so hard it’s amazing it’s still going as strong as it is.

Not to mention what they did to the classic WotLK launch. It couldn’t get any worse than that.

StunningGoggles,

What happened in the classic wotlk launch? I haven’t played since the original wotlk so it’s been awhile haha

andxz,

The servers were essentially 95-99% of either faction, and they locked migration several times seemingly on random. A lot of people got stuck on servers that were nigh unplayable because of the other faction dominating everything.

It even included paid server transfers on some servers for some weird reason. I got hardlocked on 98% alliance server while playing a tauren resto druid. Their customer service told me to “level another character on a server of my choosing”. Leveled to 80 out of sheer spite and then quit when my game time ran out.

Truly one of the biggest disappointments in my entire life. I know it’s just a game, but I had looked forward to getting to redo wrath since they first announced classic in general, and they completely ruined it.

StunningGoggles,

Damn! That sounds horrible, I remember when WoW’s customer service was seemingly top notch, how far they have fallen. I guess it’s not surprising with how disappointing Diablo 4 was.

pimento64, w Hatoful Boyfriend dev has not received any royalty payments from Epic games since Spring 2021

That’s because Epic doesn’t have any money

meatand2veg,

What’re you even talking about??? Epic takes a revenue share of every game made with unreal engine, plus Fortnite runs exclusively on mommy’s credit card and is still insanely huge. Even if the epic games store doesn’t take as big a cut of every sale, they’re held by daddy Tencent who’ll probably kick em some lunch money if they’re actually desperate.

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Guessing you didn't see the recent news about Epic doing a big layoff and shedding properties recently?

atlasraven31,

Just because you make a lot of money doesn’t mean you can’t spend it even faster.

Enkers, (edited )

This. They’ve been burning money trying to give games away for free to entice people to their platform. It’s quite possible they have a cash flow problem. That they just layed off 900 people definitely supports this idea.

sugar_in_your_tea,

I doubt it. Fortnite alone probably covers all of those free games and then some, it’s an insane cash cow. Add to that Unreal Engine revenue and they’re not hurting at all for money.

Layoffs just means they probably finished the bulk of UE5 dev and are seeing softening revenues with the COVID spike being over, so they don’t have as much demand to get that and related projects done sooner. Amazon and other big tech firms have done similar layoffs, and it’s not because they’re losing money, but because they’re seeing an end to the crazy growth in the gaming industry due to COVID-19 demand changes.

So no, I really don’t think Epic is hurting for money, they’re just cutting costs to improve margins now that revenue is likely falling.

Aux,

Epic Games is a privately owned company, thus we don’t know their financial state. We don’t know which debts they have and what ventures they have undertaken over the last few years. They might have huge debts and Fortnite might not be enough.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Sure, it’s possible, but I think unlikely. This sounds like the normal BS reasons companies give when their investors want better margins. I’m guessing Tencent isn’t happy with profit margins and wants a better short term return for their stake.

But you’re right, it’s all speculation at this point.

Hildegarde, w CD Projekt apologise for Cyberpunk 2077 Ukrainian script's potentially "offensive" references to Russians

Localization is generally contracted out to external studios. With the dozens of languages games are released in, localization is rarely done in house, especially for languages added in a patch well after release.

When CDPR says “These lines have not been written by CD PROJEKT RED staff and do not represent our views.” It makes sense.

The localization team, being fluent speakers of Ukranian, can be expected to have strong opinions on the war, so they chose to add the anti Russian lines.

It makes sense for CDPR to remove the lines. Sure their PR teams will apologize for the ‘offense,’ but the real issue is a localization team going rogue.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a far future californian dystopia. In an alternate history world where the present day would be unrecognizable to us. A future where Russia and Ukraine and others have reformed into a new USSR. This war in Ukraine did not happen in cyberpunk.

Adding references to the war in a localization is undermining the setting. Despite CDPR’s stated support for Ukraine, this is not how they want to do things. They are going to change the lines.

Steam doesn’t have a monopoly, other platforms are just shit.

Perhaps if the other platforms tried a little bit, they would actually be a competition.

Gamey,

TheBlue22,

A monopoly is defined as a single seller or producer that excludes competition from providing the same product

By this definition, Epic games would be a monopoly with its exclusives.

Gamey,

That’s not at all what a monopoly is, it’s simply the absence of competition aka the market position. You don’t have to engage in anti-competitive practices to havw a monopoly, I don’t get why that’s so hard to understand for many here…
