So they’re gonna start sending me bills until I make a game? They can’t do that! I’m too young to be a developer! Nooooooooo!

Kolanaki,

Are you incapable of understanding humor?

Did your funny bone break?

Starfield is the first and only Bethesda game I haven’t really liked. It’s got all the same gameplay elements, but it’s lacking the world building and interesting stories. The lore is bland as fuck, barely scratches the surface of what you’d want to know, and none of the stories really lean into actually telling you about the world in a fun way, opting instead to give big blocks of dialogue that are nothing but history and exposition. Where is the environmental story-telling they’ve always had? Is the blandness of the world simply a matter of it being new and young and not having nearly as much history as Elder Scrolls and Fallout to build on? Have they simply lost their touch? Believe me, I have tried to like this game. I am a huge fan of space stuff and Bethesda games, but it just doesn’t have that certain something that makes their games actually fun.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Regardless of the quality of the writing, they certainly had more interesting ideas in their lore and settings that added something to the experience. That’s what Starfield is lacking.

I just instantly thought of that blind kid that beat Ocarina of Time.

Kolanaki,

That sounds impressive AF. Gonna find that dude rn.

Fable designer

…Which one, specifically?

Restored Raphael’s hair colour and horns. The House of Hope is once again fashion-forward.

Thank God Satan.

DMC grades you on the “rule of cool.” It’s not about being good. It’s about looking good, and is based on how many times you can hit something without missing or being hit; often you’ll take out an enemy pretty fast without getting even a B rating, and I feel like getting through the game faster is better than keeping a weak ass enemy in the air for 1000 hits. So found it much easier to ignore than Hitman and other stealth game rating systems, as those really do kinda judge how well you did since they focus on being stealthy. Sure you can go in guns blazing and kill everything to win, but it’s a stealth game. You’re supposed to be sneaky. The scoring reflects that.

Kolanaki,

just posts “a” to the company Twitter

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Why is the 3060 the “most popular” when it has ~6% but “other” has ~10%? Shouldn’t the most popular GPU show “other?” 🤔

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I have been using computers and tech since I was super little, and I’ve actually noticed a trend toward simplification over time. I remember just to play dos games with sound you had to configure the sound card every time to use the correct channels and IRQ and what not… Now a days, everything is a simple button press to install and get going or plug n play.

The main difference between the setup of a PS2 and a PS5 is the internet stuff; the PS5 has more things to configure, but it’s not particularly difficult to do (updates are time consuming tho). But if you had the modem/tried to play online with the PS2, the internet setup is more complicated than the PS5’s since it requires manually forwarding ports on your router.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I remember when I first got mine, I played like 8 hours of MGS2 before I realized I forgot to buy memory cards. So I had to leave the system running overnight until I could go out and get 1.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I doubt you had to make an IBM account to use your DOS computer, right?

Just the thought of that made me vomit a little. lol

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

You can’t join all 4 factions through to the end in Fallout 4. At some point you piss off the other 3.

And in Oblivion and Skyrim, none of the factions are really opposed to each other, until DLC with the Dawnguard vs Vampires.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

To be specific, it’s build engine mechanics, with modern game ideas, in a cyberpunkish setting; so it’s got a little bit of all those things in it. It’s great!

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’ll tell you they are not oversensitive snowflakes triggered by mere words

Are they triggered by being able to select their pronouns in a game? The language used here suggests they are.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

All I remember about this game was how the media went nuts over how many times the word “fuck” was used in it. IIRC, it even had a dedicated “fuck” button!

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

And yet I find myself not wanting to play it at all after only 80 hours.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s funny and true; I have no desire to continue playing and yet I am still excited to get my hands on the toolkit and make my own shit because all I see are missed opportunities everywhere. Honestly, I kinda wonder how into sci-fi the devs actually are, because everything is surface-level and misses the mark on a lot of referencial material so often.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Why do I have to enter through the mouth? What if I want to take the backdoor and be less conspicuous?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Would anything drastic need to be done to a map to just load it up in CS2? I would assume the file format is at least the same and they’re built using Hammer.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

He exaggerates or straight up lies about the games he has made. Despite some of them being very good, they still under delivered on many outrageous claims Moleneux has made.

Like with Fable, he once said shit ranging from that you’d be able to do shit like carve your name in a tree and watch it grow and the scar evolve over time and even seemingly minor things like fighting a dragon as a boss which didn’t come to fruition.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Basically Dwarf Fortress, but sci-fi, with space travel and with really good 3D graphics.

An overly complicated simulation of an entire universe where I can do anything that the game’s laws of physics allow me to do. Particularly, I dream of a game where you can fulfil Star Trek fantasies of solving convoluted problems with equally convoluted solutions; but without it being a pre-programmed option. (“Reconfigure the deflector dish to output a neutrino wave to counter act the tachyon field!”)

Fake physics that allow for real fake science and engineering.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Close, but RimWorld’s mechanics are nowhere near the complexity, even with mods. And I don’t just mean with how many different types of rocks and trees exist. I’ve gotten as close to a DF-like experience + the space travel part, but it’s still like 1/4 of the full experience.

Although it’s moddable, which boosts it’s playability a bit more. I’ve played more RimWorld than DF at this point.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s been out longer and has improved over time. I’d wait until Starfield has been out for about the same length of time, see if things even out or continue to trend down.

What needs improvement in Starfield, though, isn’t likely to actually be improved. Can’t even think of a time where a game’s story was re-written over time to be better.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It doesn’t have the same impact from the world design or story telling. It’s generic. It’s boring. It’s bland. The game play is exactly the same, but the motivation to give a shit about anything is gone because nothing about the world is very interesting aside from the aesthetics.

Shit, man, even the books in the game are just excerpts from real books. Like… humans haven’t written anything new in the 200 something years since Earth’s exodus? Cmon.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

That’s really all I am looking forward now; the toolkit. So I can make my own quests that don’t suck.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’ve used the same password for everything since 1991. If anyone’s cracked it, they haven’t attempted to get into my shit. Probably because there’s nothing worthwhile to steal.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Hey! Stop telling people my secrets!

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s *********.

Edit: I guess the site autohides passwords? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

First of all they wouldn’t know there’s nothing worthwhile until they got in.

I mean, you can read all my comments and posts publicly, and social media accounts and such are just about the only thing I’ve ever had passwords for. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You finna steal my Lemmy account?

Security is only important when you give a shit about what can be taken without it.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Hopefully a lot of the bad ass mods that really made the first couple of games even cooler get ported for the remakes. And not just the tons of Matrix mods because the game came out around the same time the movie was new and extremely popular.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Wait… was it a leap year this year? 🤔

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Can you not connect a mouse and keyboard to the deck?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Can it not output the display to, say, a TV?

The thing could be a budget gaming PC for some people. Most people are not going to be competing super hard; they just want to play the game and have fun. Who else would be taking up the bronze and silver brackets?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Per your edit:

Anyone else remember when “competitive shooter” also implied it could be run on a fucking potato with decent speeds? Or that competitive games aren’t still meant to be played for fun by the vast majority of people who are gonna be playing?

It’s not targeted exclusively towards professionals, is it?

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Don’t bite off more than you can chew with the sequel, or you’re just going to repeat history. I liked the game since launch, but it was still very evident CDPR wanted to do more than they realistically could while still actually releasing a product.

Great vision, perhaps too much; but poorly managed their time and resources. Stretched too thin on portability to every available console at the time of release. Constant changes of scope. Etc.

What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved? angielski

I’ve been recently been thinking about Arkane Studio’s Prey which is a immersive sim, with a pretty good rogue like dlc, that probably has one of the strongest hooks of any game I’ve played. If you liked Halflife, System Shock, or Deus Ex it’s definitely worth a play....

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

That’s where it first came from. They were never on N64, but Eidos had claimed they were spiritual successors to GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

If you like Soulslikes The Surge is a really good sci-fi take on the genre. It succeeds in the vagueness, the atmosphere, and the combat. It has a bit of a gimmick with how you obtain parts by targeting and dismembering limbs which is really fun. However the story kinda goes off the rails near the end and the last few areas of the game are arguably the worst designed levels of the game. Plus the boss fights can be a PITA despite being super cool design wise.

I don’t see it brought up as often as things like Nier or Mortal Shell though, and IMO it’s better than both of those.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

the star citizen hate is only banked by people who don’t realize they’ve literally told everyone that SC isn’t getting content updates until Squadron 42 is done.

And when will that be done?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s exactly the same game, but with better graphics and technical aspects as they port Global Offensive to Source 2.

Big, well known actors in video games have been a thing for a long time now? I remember games from the 90’s that had actors like James Earl Jones, Tim Curry, Bill Paxton, Randy Quaid, and so many more growing up.

What’s interesting is, it doesn’t seem like it’s expanded or shrunk. Most games don’t hire big actors, but a handful of huge budget, AAA things do. There’s also big range in how good these actors are in the game… JK Simmons, for example, was awesome as Cave Johnson in Portal; but his performance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is, by far, the worst in the entire game IMO.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

His just felt a bit flat compared to all the other performances.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

They could do the cyberpunk or fallout 4 thing. Have Keanu Reeves in your head, or get someone known to voice the protagonist (only unlike fo4 in that the PC VAs are otherwise unknown afaik).

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

James Earl Jones and Tim Curry have both worked on Command & Conquer games.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Apparently you’re illiterate because I was asking how that makes them cheaper. None of those things matter in the slightest and would only cost marginally more to produce.

$70 is still more than $66, regardless of that unnecessary shit.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

OIC… You’re just an absolute dingus who has no fucking clue what they are on about. Cartridges were only slightly more to produce than a CD, and Nintendo still makes their games on cartridges (fancier ones than the SNES, too) that cost the same as the digital release. The only time this wasn’t true was during the 64 era, when an earthquake shut down the manufacturers of the carts and fucked up production. Do you work for Capcom? I feel like you’d fit in.
