AeonFelis, w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod

This is a big deal because it’s a Bethesda RPG so you are going to spend 76% of the time in the character creation screen.

librechad, (edited )

Basically one of the only reasons I played Bethesda games LMAO

Localhorst86, w Over 50% of all steam games have never made over $1000

If we try to exclude the super simple and cheap games by only looking at games priced at more than $5, the median is closer to $4000

just because a game is more than $5, doesn’t mean it’s not super simple, cheap shovelware.

sugar_in_your_tea, (edited )

Nobody is claiming that, the claim is merely that a lot of the games under $5 are shovelware. I’m sure you could take it a step further and try to remove shovelware, but that’s gets really subjective really fast.

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

I made an account in January 2005, probably for HL2.
I initially resisted making an account and I hated Steam back then.
They’ve since fixed a lot of things and I now have 250+ games on it.
I have to admit, Valve is one of the few big game companies that haven’t gone to absolute shit.
Though I dread the day GabeN steps down or sells out…

Another thing that I didn’t agree with back in the day was WoW, paying a subscription to play was a hard no. Still haven’t played it, which kinda sucks because I was a big fan of the old Warcraft games and of RPGs in general.
Voting with my wallet certainly didn’t change much for them, although it probably was better for me.

gridleaf,
@gridleaf@lemmy.world avatar

That’s quite similar to me. I got HL2 Jan. 2005. I played Guild Wars instead of WoW because I didn’t want to pay for a sub.

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

The first Guildwars was great.
The second one was nice too and I played it a bunch, but there’s something about the first I can’t quite put my finger on, might just be nostalgia.
My GW2 time has been mostly spent helping people with jumping puzzles, which are kinda cut short these days by mesmers making portals for them, which I also do sometimes.

CancerMancer,

WoW is a bit nuts: you pay a subscription fee and buy expansions? What’s the damn fee for then?

fuzzzerd,

Servers ain’t free. But they could at least roll the expansion cost into the subscription.

PeckerBrown, w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'

Makes my decision to not buy it even easier.

skweetis,

What made you previously decide not to buy it?

PeckerBrown,

I own many games that I impulse buy, but find out that I don’t care for. That gets expensive.

Now I’m much more selective, and tend to wait until the game’s been out long enough to get patches, updates, and reviews.

Add my lack of interest in any Todd Howard product until ES6, which I may not live long enough to play (boomer puke here), as well as the offhanded arrogance of his ‘upgrade your PC’ statement, and that about covers why I’ve decided not to buy Starfield.

IWantToFuckSpez, (edited ) w Legend has spent years making Portal for the N64 and by Gaben he's done it

Crazy what people can do with the N64 with modern knowledge. There is this German dude on YouTube who modded Mario 64 to run at 60fps on the console, the game normally only runs at around 20fps even with the C compile optimizations turned on, which Nintendo left off in the original, it rarely hits 30fps. Now he’s making his own full fledged mod for the game. https://youtu.be/t_rzYnXEQlE

drspod, w Tencent Games strategic advisor Shawn Layden issues warning about non-endemics breaking into games

Tencent Games strategic advisor Shawn Layden …

Non-endemic companies such as Google and Amazon are among the biggest threats to the games industry.

That’s according to former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden, who shared his thoughts on the future of games during the keynote at last week’s GamesIndustry.biz Investment Summit in Seattle.

The irony is palpable throughout this entire article.

PenguinTD,

They only feel it would be dangerous because they have the capital to drain talents to do experimental things while not care about the fall outs of closing subsidiaries or abandoning projects. It could also drive up developer cost and make the business more risky.(IMO, the developers are getting paid in peanuts compare to what the big publishers made. Even after considering flopped projects.)

The danger lies in once people get used to the new payscale, if big capital consider it’s not that profitable, then the better talents may not keep staying or heading toward this industry. Also less loan/venture awarded to companies doing projects not passing the “market research” phase.

Yes, and lastly Tencents also don’t like competitions bidding their potential acquisition targets.

brsrklf,

Even ignoring he’s now working for freaking Tencent, how far are we supposed to go? Even his former company Sony was technically “non-endemic” for video games before the 90s. So was Microsoft.

Nintendo was selling playing cards long before video games, and Namco was building mall coin-op rides before arcade machines. Though I guess those two and Sony were at least in the entertainment business. But in any case they weren’t created as video game companies (of course given when they were created, they couldn’t).

Sanctus, w Diablo 4 Season 2 will put fun before balance, but "we want every build to be viable"
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Decrease grinds. I want to play the fucken game not do chores. I drop games nowadays as soon as I have to grind. Grinds aren’t fun, they are methods of artificially increasing playtime and engagement. That doesn’t mean hand everything out, it means make the things you do for stuff varied. I didn’t think this would be so hard but over the last 20 years grinds have gotten worse not better. We should be doing away with them in favor of engaging mechanics. Instead everything is more or less the same game with different flavor texts and models. But they all have grinds.

FuntyMcCraiger,

I find grinds aren’t too bad.

But the grind itself has to be fun. Diablo has a gameplay problem that makes the game much less fun, and in turn, their grind sucks.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

A grind is a lapse in content. A grind is a hamster wheel in place of interesting mechanics. To grind is to toil, all in the name of throwing it away next season to start it again. If I’m purchasing entertainment, I expect to be entertained and not simply convinced I am entertained. It is not a problem that it is possible to do in a game, that much is fine if you wish. It is a problem when the developers expect you to grind hours to achieve something. It equates to nothing but a long days work at the long day factory.

Example: AC6: Fires of Rubicon allows you to purchase mech pieces in a shop for credits. These credits are handed out at mission end. You can grind “The Wall” mission in under a minute to recieve a hefty sum. Or you can just play through the story again. Thats fine within the context of the game and I can choose to grind if I want.

Diablo on the other hand expects us to literally restart every 3-4 months and do everything all over again (except the campaign itself). Which in itself is alright cause the “Immortal Realm” exists. But that effectively turns each season into a massive grind. So if you want to participate, you have no choice but to grind. Its just a little upsetting I bought a grinder and not a game.

ramblinguy,

Yeah I played for 2 hours this season, saw that I have to unlock every waypoint and do a lot of the side quests and fortresses and whatnot. On top of having to get back to certain levels so I could actually start playing the game on T3… I kinda just noped outta there

Sanctus,

I don’t know whether to be happy for a modern Atari or angry because it looks cash grabby.

geosoco,

Oh it definitely is. I mean we've had many re-releases of a 2600 including multiple Flashback consoles.

AFAIK, only one was moddable to use old catridges, but none shipped with that capability. But many came with a 20+ games and were significantly cheaper.

hactar42,

I still can’t believe they made some of the Flashbacks with IR remotes. My kids grew up in the age of the Switch. They have no idea how to keep a controller within line of sight of the console.

    Looks like Gamepass gets to play Sep 6, so it isn’t the “premium” edition that lets you play Sep 1. Oh well another 5 days won’t kill me.

    ETA: Microsoft continues to do dumb things with pricing. Standard edition is $70, Premium edition is $100. Yikes, but ok. However, they sell a Premium edition upgrade for $35. Why does Standard + Premium upgrade cost more than Premium?

    _waffle_,
    @_waffle_@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Man, I really do not like the whole “pay more to play early” nonsense. I can wait the extra days but having to avoid the Internet will be annoying

    ChaoticGood007,

    Likely they think that the upgrade is mainly (maybe exclusively) for people playing via game pass. The $5 more is because you didn’t buy the game to start with. They did the same with FH5 when that launched I believe.

    FeelzGoodMan420,

    Nah gamepass is totally fine. It’s the thought of pre ordering that makes my brain hirt.

    dan1101,

    I’m with you on pre-ordering but GTA and Elder Scrolls games are my two exceptions. Not sure how I feel about Starfield, should be similar to an Elder Scrolls game since there is no online stuff to go wrong.

    FeelzGoodMan420,

    My whole hearted advice is to wait for reviews before ever buying a game. Therenis really absolutely zero reason to ever pre order. The pre order bonus skins or whatever are playing on your emotions. People need to resist!
