“Redfall is looking awesome, it has Arkane’s best gunplay yet.”

fckreddit,

I remember this one. Don’t trust AAA developers and game journos. Wait for reviews before buying.

Transcendant, w Starfield is Bethesda's Least Buggiest Game to Date, Say Sources

I think we’ve all learned our collective lesson at this point (or at least, we should have) not to over-hype games, nor to pre-order them.

I’m going to have to temporarily move in with my dad in October potentially for a few months, should be some decent reviews in by then so I’m looking forward to killing time with this game!

Centillionaire,

Reminder it’s on gamepass!

Transcendant,

Thanks. I think I had GP a while back just to play AC: Valhalla, so I won’t get a cheeky deal… I’ll probably buy it on GOG, as it seems like it’s not going to be the sort of game I complete within a month or two, I prefer to ‘own’ a game than rent it once I’m satisfied it’s for me.

BadlyDrawnRhino,

It will be a few years before it’s on GOG, so it really depends how patient you are. Fallout 4 only appeared on there a week or two ago to give you a frame of reference.

Transcendant,

Oh dang. thanks for the headsup. Will it not be on steam day1?

BadlyDrawnRhino,

It’ll be on Steam day one, yeah.

The people who have “learned” “the lesson” are a loud minority. The vast majority of consumers will put money wherever they feel like it, philosophy be damned.

weirdo_from_space, w 2023 was the most watched Gamescom Opening Night Live in history. Viewership was up 66% over ONL 2022, and Gamescom had 320,000 attendees across the week in Cologne, Germany.

Why’s demand for E3 is so low comparatively? What’s different with gamescom? I know gamescom used to be the gamer focused convention when E3 was still focused on business side but what’s different about it today?

dan1101,

E3 was canceled in 2020 due to Covid and hasn’t been back since. There was no E3 in 2023. I have no idea why though.

weirdo_from_space,

Because times are changing, E3 no longer has the prestige it once held. Presenting your game in E3 costs an arm and a leg and isn’t any more effective than making a Direct presentation video. Because of that companies are moving into online showcases. I wonder how Gamescom and Summer Games Fest maintained relevancy while E3 turned into a nostalgic memory.

kugel7c,

I think one of the main draws of Gamescom has always been the community or interactivity, also Köln is in the blue banana of Europe so there’s probably almost 100milion people within a 5 hour drive. I don’t really know why E3 is failing but I can roughly tell you why Gamescom isn’t, for one while there are occasional issues Orga is good generally, half of the German media lives a stones throw away from the fairgrounds, a lot of entertainment is provided besides the fair itself (concerts and other things throughout the city), it’s organised by the German games industry association so the cashflow required could be more easily acquired, it also likely means more stability, the city and potentially the entire country want the event to succeed which likely helps. Most of this is just educated guesswork though so take it with a little scepticism.

weirdo_from_space,

E3 is failing because companies can just upload their showcases to YouTube now. Modern day E3 is a consumer event anyway, why not deliver the announcements they are looking for in a manner that’s cheaper and more convenient for everyone?

It seems like gamescom is more of a festival where announcements are a bit of a bonus. Gamescom’s better public relations most likely help too.

kugel7c,

I also read today that there’s a game developer conference organised by the same association around the time here too, so that likely helps a lot. If your team is already there to learn they might as well present stuff and vice versa.

How to launder money 101

chaogomu,

They aren't laundering money. No. They're basically just setting it on fire.

See, Chris Roberts is the king of feature creep. He keeps wanting to add in the new shiny while not paying attention to finishing the shit that's already on the list.

They've also thrown out previous work to start over again more than once.

sane,
@sane@feddit.de avatar

Star Citizen needs something like what happened to Freelancer if they ever want to release: change of management. It suffered the exact same feature creep and that only ended when Microsoft stepped in and ousted Roberts

space,

Check my other comment, I found a quote saying they have about 1000 employees. At $100k/yr average salary, that’s about $100M/yr just to pay the salaries. Even if they underpay at $50k/yr, thats $50M/yr. That money is simply being burned. This whole project is a classic example of feature creep and sunk cost fallacy.

Good for them. Where the hell is the next Elder Scrolls already? That poor old woman who plays Skyrim is gonna die before it comes out.

tal,
@tal@kbin.social avatar

Maybe if they make enough money on this, they can expand and develop The Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series in parallel, as well as whatever else they have cooking, instead of working on only one title at a time.

Khalic, w Starfield is Bethesda's Least Buggiest Game to Date, Say Sources

I see the npcs still have the signature Bethesda empty stare… is that a stylistic choice or do they just suck at face mocap?

PositiveNoise,
@PositiveNoise@kbin.social avatar

neither. They probably just haven't implemented default facial expressions yet (but probably have support for them).

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Do they even use facial mocap? Fallout 4’s best facial animations were all reserved for Preston Garvey, and they are so not very smooth, I always assumed they were done by hand.

There was another big release, too. I can’t remember what. Final Fantasy?

Competing with established titles requires a lot if marketing.

Spacellary,

This game (Immortals of Aveum) already had a lot of controversy when they announced the PC minimum requirements, including an RTX 2080. People knew something wasn’t right there (optimization seemed poor, game was made with “upscaling in mind” - aka “we didn’t do anything to optimize this other than adding FSR2/DLSS, good luck”). Releases and it’s worse than expected with mediocre graphical features and horrible performance, generic cookie cutter garbage.

123,

It’s just too good to stop playing

regalia, w Armored Core VI peaks at 150K peak concurrent Steam players on day 1, making it the 4th biggest launch of 2023. It's also the second biggest From Software launch ever, second only to Elden Ring

They don’t care about the quality as long as it’s passable most of these people are underpaid anyway. AAA setting the bar lower and lower is nothing new.
