HughJanus, w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod

So there was a modification that remove pronouns, and they removed it, because it was “bigoted”…?

I’m so very confused as to what’s happening here…

Why would a “bigot” make a mod like that, and why would anyone care?

dangblingus,

Your either baiting, or you haven’t really been paying attention to the culture war taking place in North America.

HughJanus,

No I’m just legitimately confused about why anyone would do that or why anyone would care that they did.

foo,
sonnenzeit,

The part that confuses me a bit is that it’s a mod that removes functionality from a single player game. Usually features get added, not removed. When something is removed it’s usually to improve stability or performance. Or to rebalance the gameplay. This change falls into none of these categories.

Well I guess if the mod author did it to garner attention or make a point he/she/they succeeded.

BadLackey, (edited ) w BioWare vet says Mass Effect and Dragon Age got "too homogenous," wishes Dragon Age had been more "Neverwinter-like"

I would pay good money for a stand-alone ME3 Multiplayer remake with all the bugs fixed, new maps, and less BS grind. I think I put almost 2000 hours into the multiplayer and still don’t have all the guns unlocked/upgraded

Molecular0079, w Valve employee reveals “stupid expensive” scrapped VR console plans

He’s right, a product like that would have failed dramatically. At this point I just want them to release a dumb AF, streaming-only, inside-out tracking VR headset that connects to PCs. Forget trying to cram an expensive Qualcomm or AMD chip in there, it will never give you the ideal VR experience. Make something that’s $200 bucks, connects to any PC running SteamVR, and just does extremely well with streaming and low-latency. Both Airlink and VRDesktop have already shown that its possible to get extremely close to a cabled experience. All that’s left is some polish.

otacon239,

I just want to be able to buy something like an Oculus CV1 without Oculus software/proprietary hardware and a nicer screen. I’m still rocking the same unit I got several years ago and it’s still plenty fine for most things.

All of the fancy things like wireless and no-tower tracking are nice, but I imagine a lot of players are going to be seated and just want the immersion. Why not have a $300-400 offering that does this?

maxprime,

I could be wrong on this since I have no source but I always assumed that Oculus headsets were cheap because they’re a Meta product and you’re actually paying for it with your data/telemetry.

Like, the ungodly amount they spent on VR R&D is absolutely not being made up for by the few hundred dollar price tag on their headsets — I bet that barely covers the cost of materials. That must be for a reason.

TonyTonyChopper,
@TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz avatar

the consumer version 1 was before meta bought them

Molecular0079,

Why not have a $300-400 offering that does this?

I think having base stations not only increases price but also makes it unapproachable for a vast majority of people. Personally, I didn’t even consider the CV1 or the Index because I just didn’t have a room that could properly accommodate them. For the sitting use case, no-tower tracking is actually very suitable and probably works better.

dudewitbow,

I mean isnt this why people bought the HP Reverb?

Its partially a self inflicted problem if you need Valve to do it.

PenguinTD,

even at ideal condition there is about 1~2ms latency(streaming 1080p game), while hitting 90hz requires 11ms frame time. so you are asking the game to at least perform at 111fps or above to function under said ideal condition. I think if some manufacturer can put together a chip set where they do the frame gen tech on the head set side, so the game just need to run at 60fps it would be a better option.(like PS VR ) Frame gen does require some other buffers to generate the in between frames, so that’s more info to stream over the bandwidth.

mihnt,
@mihnt@kbin.social avatar

100%. I've attempted to shop for this exact thing. I won't give zuck any money so. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

nickwitha_k, (edited )

That’s basically what I got. Xreal Air (formerly Nreal until a C&D from Epic). 1080p per eye and something like 49PPD with a 45° FOV. Tracking is 6DOF and requires software on the host (only complaint) and connectivity is via a USB-C cable (uses DP alt mode).

It’s nearly as “dumb” as an HMD can get. From the teardowns that I’ve seen, it’s really just got an MCU, a GPIO expander, a 6DOF chip, and the displays + drivers. And I love that about it. No batteries or anything to worry about.

HidingCat,

45 FOV sounds really narrow, aren't the headsets pushing like 100 degrees or so?

nickwitha_k,

It is pretty narrow but also what makes it work, IMO. I don’t have them for immersion but for display replacement. The narrow field of view lets the 1080p display have nearly 0 screen door effect. Plus, the birdbath optics are really cheap compared to waveguides or fancy lenses in VR headsets.

theCheek,

This has been on my radar for a while to compliment my steam deck. But I believe it doesn’t do head tracking with the steam deck or does it? I just want a floating screen in front of me that stays still when moving my head around, otherwise I’m gonna hurl!

nickwitha_k,

I think it’s great for my Deck but, that will indeed be a problem. The headset contains only the sensors and display systems but, none of the logic circuitry to “pin” displays. Including that would increase the price a good deal.

theCheek,

Understood thanks for the feedback. After posting you reignited my interest and I found out that they also have their product called beam which would do the trick to make a spatial display… if you’re willing to cough up another 120 for it!

nickwitha_k,

If you’re willing to cough up another 120 for it!

Yeah… I’m not :P But, I am plotting a DIY solution. A solution that will probably cost more than $120 on components but, I think it will still be worth it.

ricecake,

So, I’ve got one for my steam deck and it’s less an issue than you might think, in my opinion.

When you’re focused on the screen, it doesn’t create too much incongruity when the background shifts, and it’s easy to just let you brain parse the screen as something that just floats in front of you.
It’s not immersive enough to get the inner ear involved and confused. It’s a lot closer to holding a phone sideways about six inches from your face and moving your head around.

The only time it felt weird was when I was using it in a well lit room, and I shifted my focus to something not on the screen, that was closer than the apparent distance to the floating display. It was weird feeling my vision try to reconcile that the nearer thing was moving behind the far thing.

mindbleach,

they’re in the walls!

CancerMancer, (edited )

Can it be used wirelessly with the Deck?

ricecake,

No, it does have to be attached by a cable. You can get an adapter that lets you charge while using it.

The glasses are basically a monitor.

HidingCat,

Ah, ok. My reason to get a headset is for immersion with seated gameplay. Games like ETS2 and Elite:Dangerous.

nickwitha_k,

Makes sense. Yeah. Any birdbath setup will be wrong for that. They typically get great PPD but, narrow FOV.

Astroturfed, w Destiny 2 has one of the worst bugs in its history that’s melting bosses and PvP players

I’m amazed the amount of players those game still has. I bought it felt robbed and quit soon after release. Bungie is a shell of a what it once was.

DeriHunter,

I think you and I played different games… Destiny is a great game! One of the best looter shooter ever made. The gameplay and lore is freaking great. The only issue to me is that there are 2 much content and the amount of time you need to dedicate for this game is huge.but when I was younger and responsibilities free I had a blast

Astroturfed,

Maybe now. They released a game with barely any content and sold the content to you.

Ansis,

Yeah, lotsa downvotes but D2 is great. The issue is the amount of paid content - every tiny little new mission, gun or area is a new expansion or season pass. I get that they need to feed the people creating the new stuff but it’s still like >$100 a year for you to play all the newest content when it comes out.

I usually skip the seasons because they’re basically the same mission on repeat with a little cutscene at the start and end. If you’re patient, you can get the DLCs for 1/3rd of the price and still have lots of fun with it. I even get cool cosmetics (in-game currency) and play endgame content with my clanmates so it’s definitely not pay2win.

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

I quit it because of sunsetting content. I love to know what I have in a game and that if I wanna stop and play other things for a few months or something that I can return and still play through that content.

As soon as they sunset entire planets and disallowed you from being able to play the campaign on your own time, relegating the entire thing to randomized heroic missions on a daily rotation, I just couldn't do it anymore and left. It's absolutely the worst FOMO implementation I've ever seen in a game and it fucking disgusts me.

I couldn't believe what a breath of fresh air it was to play through Borderlands 3 this year and just be able to know what the whole game was, what all the content was, and that I could play that content any time I wanted, forever, without any chance that it would simply disappear on me, after I'd already paid for it.

Astronautical,

Those things were all taken out of the game like 2 1/2 years ago though

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

That would be when I quit, yes.

Astronautical,

I meant that those systems were removed. Sunsetting is not in the game anymore, and planets have been slowly trickling back in with seasonal content and whatnot.

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

That seems a little better, but seasonal content must be paid for, right? Does that mean the content I paid for that's sunsetted id have to pay for again seasonally? And what about the campaign?

Astronautical,

Seasonal content is $12 a season, sadly (really dumb too since Silver only can be bought in $10 or $15 packs) but campaigns and their respective content stays in the game. They also have overhauled practically every game mode aside from Gambit, and occasionally have free weekends for DLC. Overall, it’s better in some ways and worse in others.

SolOrion,

It has great bones. The game is incredibly smooth, and the gunplay is fantastic. Their monetization is absolute trash, though. I absolutely despise their seasonal system, and they keep vaulting shit I’ve paid for.

Plus they keep changing the fucking minimum light! Twice since release, I think, they’ve basically reset me so that I’m functionally a brand new player with some neat level 1 exotics I now have to farm shit to keep fusing to level up.

sp6, (edited ) w Apex Legends bans over 2000 cheaters as it gets set for the Harbingers Collection Event

Considering less than a month ago they were making headlines for mistakenly banning linux players (but eventually unbanning them, thankfully), makes me wonder how many of those bans are false-positives.

I was one of the linux players who was banned. It took them about 8 days for them to unban me in-game, and then it took another week for my EA ban history to change from “active” to “overturned,” with an email from EA. No apology, no sort of in-game compensation, just basically a “be thankful you can play again.”

~25% of the linux players are still banned. Some definitely cheated, some I would be shocked if they cheated, just considering the amount of hours and money they had put into their account, along with how enthusiastic they were about getting themselves (and others) unbanned. So shocked that I’m almost certain they’re false positives. Which makes me hesitant to keep playing - what if that happens to me? If they treat their Steam Deck and linux users this way, is that a game I really want to support?

darkeox,

That's the problem with non official support. You're basically in an unending beta-testing phase. Theres' no easy solution here I'm afraid.

sp6,

Well Respawn explicitly enabling Easy Anti-Cheat’s Proton support (plus the game being Steam Deck Verified) is about as official as we’re gonna get for the vast majority of multiplayer games. I think it’s more of an issue around EA firing 99% of their QA testers…

darkeox,

Well the thing with those "enabled EAC on Linux to see where it gets us" is it's non-binding and non-commital. And it's made explicitely that way so that support cannot be demanded from Linux users unlike Windows users who are explicitely mentioned in the systems supported by the game.

We legally don't have any ground to be supported the same as Windows users.

AeonFelis, w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod

Rule of thumb - if there are two sides to the issue, but one side is only supported by heartless idiots, and these heartless idiots happen to be identified with the political camp you oppose - then it’s a political issue.

Yewb, w Payday 3 developer drops Denuvo from the game before it's even out

Dude that pre release beta was terrible almost everything was inferior to payday2 there is zero chance if me buying this game.

RedditWanderer,

Damn that’s sad to hear.

All they had to do was remake payday 2 with a few improvements/new puzzles/ maps and they would have made bank.

Payday 2 sold 40 million copies full AAA price too (like 79$ back then or wtv). They should have had the money to make a good game.

Fraylor,

Well after paying executive salaries and bonuses they unfortunately couldn’t have predicted the game would be on a bootstrap budget.

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

Tbh I'm not really a fan of this stance either. If I'm buying a sequel I expect meaningful improvements, otherwise you're just ripping me off for something that could have been a dlc or expansion to the first game.

themoonisacheese,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Tbh, a large part of payday2’s problems stem from being built on a racing game engine. Redoing pd2 on unreal straight would be of course a lot of work, but the end result would be a better product that I would pay for. Payday3 on the other hand doesn’t look like something that I would enjoy based on the fact unlike pd2.

GreenMario,

I played the beta.

It’s prettier Payday 2 with some quality of life tweaks. Plus it’s cross platform multiplayer which means I can PC with my Xbox friends.

That other guy is just salty. Whatever, it’s a brand new game for $40, not $70. I’d say give gamepass a shot if ya wanna rent it for a month.

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Didn’t play it but I had to drop PD2 with about 200 hours on it after all the microtransactions got too much to deal with. Coupled with the fact that hosts could leave games in the middle of a heist with no punishment and risking your account being banned for accidentally getting on a crew with a hacker, the game lost a lot of its appeal.

themoonisacheese,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

It is basically impossible to be banned at all from playing payday 2. The worst you can do is equip invalid stuff, which marks you as a cheater and most people kick marked cheaters.

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Idk my account was banned for about a month within the first year of the game coming out because a hacker started spawning infinite money bags on the Harvest bank. It took about a month of emails with support to get my account unbanned. It’s possible that they’ve since slacked off on enforcement, but I haven’t played the game in easily 5 years at this point.

CancerMancer,

Payday 2 did two things that drove me away: fundamental changes to the gameplay long after release that did not improve it (heavyhanded stealth nerfs), and an absolute mountain of DLC, complete with power creep.

I will be waiting quite a while before touching Payday 3 because I want to see how they will monetize it. Remember, it’s up against the likes of Deep Rock Galactic which is not at all abusively monetized. We do not need to suffer that shit again.

ElmarsonTheThird,
@ElmarsonTheThird@feddit.de avatar

Good it’s on gamepass after release so you can test it out until it eventually leaves.

gk99,

I mean, to be blunt, the game was never going to beat PAYDAY 2. PD2 is years of updates and content additions to make it fun despite the shitty engine, PAYDAY 3 is a brand new game with a lot of potential but all of it unrealized.

GreenMario, w Payday 3 developer drops Denuvo from the game before it's even out

Appreciated but strange. Did they look at the sub cost and went nah or something else? I mean could have just wanted it for the beta but idk seems overkill (heh heh).

Selmafudd,

I don’t understand why anybody would pay for it while it can be cracked… sure its likely only one person in the world can crack it atm but if she wants to crack it she can and then it’s gonna be uploaded and repacked by multiple people.

ThunderingJerboa, (edited )
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

But its multiplayer only (which has its own problems). So a crack would be pointless. Its always pinging home, so it just wouldn't work.

Selmafudd,

I’ve never played any of the paydays so yeah I’m not sure, some multiplayer can work with self hosted servers etc.

But yeah if it’s only official servers even more reseaon not to pay for the service

Hubi, w Fables creator places Wolf Among Us universe in public domain amid clash with DC over Telltale adaptation

Wow, pretty radical, but what a cool move. I’m sure it’ll be a good thing for the fans of the games and universe in the long run.

pjhenry1216,

It's a shame that it's even considered "radical" since it's basically a copyright holder upholding their end of the bargain in the promise behind the origin of copyright. To incentivize creative content, a creator is given sole ability to monetize it for a fixed period of time. In return for that protection, the public gets it at the end of the term. Today's copyright is so far off course that it defeats the intent. There's no incentive to create anything new if you can keep milking existing content. And the public never gets a return for offering that protection.

mindbleach, (edited )

Companies expect to sell something a million times and still own it.

Nah, guys. Culture belongs to its audience. It’s ours. We bought it. That’s what the money was for.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS, (edited )

Pretty radical for a dude who throws his conservative believes into everything?

The author of Fables is very conservative in his political beliefs. He has written anti-abortion and pro-Isreal material into the Fables comics themselves.

gk99,

I mean, yeah, considering “conservatives” generally only seem to care about taking rights away from others. Giving back is pretty radical of them.
