Wait, they rehashed a Super Nintendo game from thirty years ago, and didn’t even launch with all of its dozen levels? The original weighed less than a megabyte! Opening day should’ve been every track from all two of the 2D F-Zero games Nintendo ever made.
Weirdly, I have to defend against the idea they killed F-Zero. They did exactly what they intended with it, from the get-go: they showed off new hardware with a previously-impossible sense of speed. Once for SNES planecasting, once for N64 z-buffering, once for GBA planecasting, and once for Gamecube fillrate.
Every other F-Zero game is third-party.
Nintendo is a toy company. If a product is not novel, they are not interested. That’s why every Mario Kart has some stupid gimmick. Even in the first one, splitscreen multiplayer was the stupid gimmick. They shipped F-Zero and realized the SNES had a second controller… but no two-player games. Shrinking the courses to a static tilemap required smaller scale and lower speed, hence tiny karts. Really take a moment to consider that: even by 1992, F-Zero was not fit for purpose. It no longer achieved what Nintendo makes games for. Doing it again would not be impressive. Doing it again would not be novel. And the fact it’s easy to cram endless bullshit into Mario Kart is why that franchise keeps getting releases, while F-Zero collected dust - until they picked this online clusterfuck gimmick.
But the fact this retro game-as-a-service (ptoo!) couldn’t be arsed to include even one game’s whole level set, when each track must take less space than this comment, is baffling.
Damn, our hardware is so similar. I’m running a (single) 7900 XT and a 7600X. I’m also running on an nvme ssd, but presumably with your hardware you are too.
I wasn’t trying to be an ass with my question about your specs, it’s just that my hardware isn’t particularly high end, so I was confused at why so many people are having performance issues.
How are these people not seeing that they are actively trying to censor shit with the shyte excuse “keep politics out of my games”, and then turn around and yell censorship as soon as people ignore their bigoted crap.
The rhetorical question highlights the complex nature of the debates around modding and game customization. The term “censorship” can indeed be used selectively to further one’s viewpoint, whether it’s calling for the removal of political elements from games or protesting the removal of a mod.
However, maybe it’s worth considering that people may hold these opinions without necessarily harboring bigoted intentions. The desire to keep politics out of games, for some, might stem from the view that games should be an escape from real-world issues. Conversely, concerns about censorship could arise from a belief in preserving the open nature of modding communities.
What we’re really grappling with is how to balance the broad spectrum of user needs and societal responsibilities. Accusations of bigotry or censorship often serve to shut down dialogue rather than facilitate a nuanced discussion about these complex issues.
So while your question is rhetorical, it does bring to light the need for more open and honest conversations about the competing values that are in play here.
In my opinion this entire debate is not political at all but is simply made to be a political statement because people don’t understand it.
Having someone forbid the use of cheese in video games because that person doesn’t like cheese is just never going to happen. If cheese comes out to be an extreme health hazard like smoking it can become political but if the only argument is “because I don’t like it” you are always going to be wrong.
Your arguing about taste and feelings. There is no point to it, as there is nothing to convince. At that point you are just telling someone their taste or feeling is wrong.
But for some reason people think they can influence someone else’s own feelings about how they feel when they get addressed as their birth gender. And for some reason it is made into a political problem because of how strongly people think they have to have control over this. It doesn’t affect them, and the only possible outcome is that a minority will suppress their emotions. There are no competing values in any way.
I don’t like cheese, but you won’t hear me bitching about people eating cheese next to me in a restaurant even if I don’t like the smell. And you especially won’t see me making this political, because that is so incredibly selfish and ignorant that it wouldn’t even be something I’d ever consider.
Probably enough people to keep Unity afloat. Let's be honest, who's going to reskill their gamedevs to learn Godot or some other game engine? Decision makers will probably spend more money on trying to find ways around the problem than actually solving it aka using another game engine.
It's what they do.
Doesn’t fucking matter when they keep using cheap potentiometers in their joysticks making them only last 6-12 months before stick drift gets unbearable. It’s time they switch to hall effect sensors. I have a joystick from 2014 with hall effect and zero drifting. I have a king Kong 2 controller with hal effect sensors. Zero stick drift after nearly a year of rocket League abuse and zero drifting. I’ve gone through 2 Xbox elite controllers in 1.5 years. Get rid the trash components first.
this is a wake-up call to this industry and any other industry enjoying a glut of "free" (as in beer) proprietary tools owned entirely by private (or worse: public!) organizations.
this will always be the result. every single time. if you think you and your industry are immune to getting bait & switched, you are very wrong.
chaining your livelihood to a for-profit organization is begging to eventually be extorted in this manner. greed is inevitable.
Ok so firstly it’s not free, people pay for it, and secondly you act like there’s an alternative. You use the products that are available, if there isn’t a free product available or the free product that is available isn’t very good you don’t have a choice.
For a long time Unity was basically the only game in town other the Source but that was very old no one really used it.
I don‘t support Microsoft in any way but it is kinda funny that some PlayStation Users seem to feel personally attacked that Microsoft starts to do all the exclusivity shit that Sony has done for ages. Quit treating the whole thing as a team thing - a my team vs. that other team thing. Sony AND Microsoft are companies that will both fuck you over within the blink of an eye if it will make them money or damage the other company.

I don’t even own a PlayStation so why should I quit anything? In fact, I’m a PC gamer running Windows. I can make my dumb jokes as often as I like and when I want to make fun of the fact that both Microsoft and Bethesda claimed before the acquisition that it was not about removing cross-platform support for Bethesda games and Microsoft also claims to “❤️ Linux”, you cannot stop me, even if you’d like to.
I also find it hilarious that Microsoft apologists claim that “that Sony has done the same for ages” which is factually untrue. Sony hardly ever bought cross-platform games in-house for PlayStation exclusivity (maybe the would of they had enough spare money but they don’t). Sony also releases plenty of games for Microsoft platforms, including MLB The Show, Horizon, Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, etc. Heck, the recently announced Marathon reboot is confirmed to come to Xbox and not just PlayStation and Microsoft Windows. Much of my PC gaming in recent years was spent playing Sony games on Windows.
I bought a PS5 because my old XBone was on the fritz, and the series x wasn’t available at the time… plus hardware failure from the Xbone made me lean towards Sony anyway. Hard-core console gamers also helped push me into it as well… “who cares about Halo, you will be able to play all the good games on either console”.
I have no team, and now I kind of regret even buying a console at all, it’s only real feature for me is it has a fast boot up time lol. Every other article about a new game seems to be a kick in the nuts to console owners.
What’s the benefit of Steam deck vs something like Ally ROG? Genuine question, I have no horse in the race. (I can’t even find as much time as I wished to game in my free time at home, I am definitely not going to spend book reading time on subpar gaming)
Every time it looks like it’s starting to calm down the idiot CEO comes out and makes a bunch of inflammatory comments and tells everybody it’s their fault for being confused or somebody actually asks for an exemption and they deny it on made up grounds.
It would actually be better if they just fired the CEO and try to blame everything on him. That is literally their only move at this point.
Is he the same guy who trash talk the employee a while back?
In 2019, he said:
“Ferrari and some of the other high-end car manufacturers still use clay and carving knives. It’s a very small portion of the gaming industry that works that way, and some of these people are my favourite people in the world to fight with – they’re the most beautiful and pure, brilliant people. They’re also some of the biggest f*cking idiots,” Riccitiello told PG in the interview."
