This doesn’t even take into account things like Destiny 2 which had half of the paid content excised from the game.

Oh, it’s still “supported” and online, and playable… just with none of the content that makes it make sense.

ProdigalFrog,

Hmm… That’s a bit of an odd case. I’m not sure how that would fare under this proposal. I would personally be for saving that content, but if they argue the removal of that older content is part of the experience of the game, similar to how MMO’s change things with updates… I dunno, could be tricky.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

So what happened was, they sold the base game for $60, then had multiple paid expansions over time.

A few years in, Bungie decided to start “Vaulting” content, literally removing it from the game. This included all of the original story based missions, 1/2 of the planetary destinations, the first two expansions, and all their associated missions, strikes, raids, etc. etc.

Just gone. Not in the game anymore.

The stated reason was that it was too much for new players to download, but then new players came in going “I don’t know where to start. What do I do?” because all the story based progression had been removed.

They have since changed their mind on vaulting MORE content, but at the same time, they haven’t restored anything either.

ProdigalFrog,

Ah, if you paid specifically for that content (as like a DLC or something) and it has been removed, I think this initiative might help with that, because that is absolutely destroying access to something you paid for. The main game may still be online and supported, but if they kill support for the expansions you purchased, that’s effectively ‘ending’ support for the DLC/expansion, which is destroying a product you paid for.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, they removed 1/2 of the base game and the first few expansions.

For those who can’t watch the video:

Across the globe, companies can simply say you DO NOT own your games as long as they have a EULA, and it even gives them the power to destroy your ability to play a game!

Ross Scott (of Freeman’s Mind and Game Dungeon fame) has done the leg-work of researching how much power these companies have in various countries, and what he found was that, as a gamer, you effectively have the same amount of rights as a squirrel.

The only way to stop this practice would take millions of dollars to fight it legally in court, and uh… I don’t really see any millionaire gamers willing to take up that cause. So, in any realistic sense, the corps have won here. There’s nothing we can realistically do, short of boycotting.

BUT, that doesn’t count for the EU, Scandinavian countries, Canada, UK, or Australia. Unlike the US, they actually have functional consumer protection laws, and ways for consumers to fight back against corporate overreach without needing to have a few million in the bank.

If you live in any of those countries, we could use your help! It would help even further if you’ve purchased and own The Crew at any point in time, but you can help even if you haven’t!

If you live anywhere else, you can STILL help by helping sign a French consumer petition, which has real weight to do something, it isn’t like one of those pointless change(dot)org ones! But to participate, you must have owned the game.

You’re on the front lines of consumer protection for gamers across the globe! Your actions (if we’re ultimately successful) would likely have ramifications even in the US and Canada!

How can you help? If you can’t watch the video, here’s the website with an FAQ on what you can do to help: StopKillingGames.com

This is likely going to be the biggest push for consumer protection for gamers there has ever been, so… Like, it’s kind’ve a big deal. Let’s make this count, guys.

The problem is IMO much bigger. Every connected and/or IoT device becomes physical waste if the vendor shuts down the backing infrastructure.

Every product (physical or digital) should be considered as a unit with the required technical infrastructure. Companies/producers should only have two choices: keep maintaining the infrastructure or publish everything necessary for individuals and/or a community to take over. This must be ready from the moment such a product enters the market and it must be part of the “will” of the company so if it goes bankrupt, the whole process can be triggered more or less automatically.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I take issue with the requirement being “when it’s no longer supported” for similar reasons. I can foresee an argument where a company advocates for some scenario where they’re going out of business and can’t do it, and some 75-year-old judge who hasn’t played a video game since Tetris lets it slide. Still, this is the shot we have, and we need to take it.

Would be nice if every game publisher was required to contribute a version of their game, that can be played without an external network or license, to the country’s main library. For cultural safe-keeping. I know at least one country does that for books.

    It’s the “complaining when they end” thing that I’m interested in, for sure. Especially if a government listens, which he’s aiming to make happen here.

    MotoAsh,

    If people are paying for it, there should at least be a significant communicated EOL plan. It’s also highly arguable that at ‘least’ executables should be released for self-hosting. I haven’t even seen the video or campaign, it’s just common sense. I am a software engineer that gets paid to maintain this kind of stuff, and I’d be PISSED if a big chunk of my body of work became useless for any other reason than the task it solved became superfluous.

    With video games, very little of the end-user experience is superfluous ever (I mean, plenty of dud unoriginal games, but…), so the whole industry deserves some preservation laws. At least don’t punish people for doing for free what the companies refuse to do…

    Essence_of_Meh,
    @Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world avatar

    If by “still paying” you mean trying to change something about the industry using closure of a decade old game then sure, you could say that.

    If you don’t care about this campaign, he still does videos about older titles - they release every 2-3 months, with the latest one being this video about “State of Mind”.

    aodhsishaj,

    What does corporate cock taste like? I’ve always wondered why so many people jump to defend anti-consumer practices.

    I think this track ball setup would be better suited for more 3d games involving flight, underwater exploration, space travel, etc. At the end of the day, shoulder+wrist will always beat thumb when it comes to aiming in shooters, but this seems like it would really open up dynamic movement in a way standard controllers and mice can’t. Id love to hear feedback after playing something like subnautica.

    SkabySkalywag, do games w [PyottDesign] Ultimate FPS Controller Design and Build

    Reminds me of that gross, weird controller in that movie ‘eXistenz’

    RinseDrizzle,

    Lol amazing! That was such a bizarre movie. Those fleshy controllers with the nipples are so unsettling.

    JimVanDeventer, do games w Virtual Boy Pro for Nintendo Switch - Announcement Trailer (2024)

    In case anyone actually wants one, that headset is real because Mario Odyssey has a VR mode.

    ZC3rr0r,

    Wait, what? How do we even know it has a VR mode if no Nintendo hardware exists that renders anything but the Labo kit in VR?

    JimVanDeventer,

    The VR mode was added to work with the Labo kit. But these headsets also exist now… because…? I don’t think the Labo was head-mounted, but maybe I’m wrong because I never had Labo.

    v2.0 with gyro

    JoYo,
    @JoYo@lemmy.ml avatar

    that would be really cool.

    supersquirrel,

    sigh all this work and they didn’t put in gyro?

    Something tells me the person who made this doesn’t actually love playing multiplayer shooters with a controller, they just wanted a cool project to show off their DIY skills.

    Viking_Hippie, do games w Virtual Boy Pro for Nintendo Switch - Announcement Trailer (2024)

    I thought Virtual Boy Pro was what Ben Shapiro’s famously dry wife called him until he paid her to stop?

    Zehzin,
    @Zehzin@lemmy.world avatar

    Stop putting the onus of wetness on the poor woman. She’s dry when she’s with him, but you can’t blame her for that, the man is a human silica packet

    Viking_Hippie,

    You’re right and I’m sorry for any confusion as I very much intended to blame the human silica packet for his sexual ineptitude and general repulsiveness lol

    CrayonRosary, do games w Virtual Boy Pro for Nintendo Switch - Announcement Trailer (2024)

    I can’t believe they acknowledged the Virtual Boy ever existed. Why they never ported the games to 3DS is mind boggling.

    statue7559,

    April Fools.

    CrayonRosary,

    Obviously. Even for April fools I’m surprised they acknowledged the Virtual Boy ever existed.

    Link,

    The homebrew community has ported the games to 3DS with an emulator.

    CrayonRosary, (edited )

    Yes, it’s called Red Viper and it’s great! I’m just surprised Nintendo didn’t do it themselves.

    kratoz29,
    @kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

    Yeah the fact that this already exists and it is pretty much perfect just makes me think that it is a lame move from Nintendo, even if it was meant to be a joke lol.

    Nibodhika,

    There’s also an emulator for the oculus quest, the moment you launch a game you understand why it wasn’t that successful and why VR was abandoned for a while.

    Monochrome games are all good and fun when the screen is not a few cm from your eyes and that’s the only color you can see hahahah

    atocci,

    Don't worry, they still haven't acknowledged it! This is IGN's video!

    CrayonRosary,

    Oh shit! That makes more sense then. Thanks

    CameronDev,

    Luigis Mansion 3 has a pretty overt acknowledgement of the Virtual Boys existance. The entire in game menu is in one.
