TommySoda, do games w Bungie lays off 220 people, will set up spin-off studio

My general rule of thumb when it comes to this is that if they say “due to rising costs” within the first few sentences it usually means “not enough money for the important people.”

I’ve seen indie devs make more functional and graphically intensive games on a shoe string budget. And then go around and sell it for less than $60.

JJROKCZ,

Plenty of amazing small studios make great games for a budget of a couple packs of mtn dew and some cheese whiz crackers

Abnorc,

I think it would be easier for indie devs to keep cost down. They have fewer devs and artists on payroll. The issue with triple A games is that they’re super expensive to produce, and small teams can output excellent work as well.

TommySoda,

Let’s be real though, they are only so expensive to produce because they have the notion that bigger and more expensive means better. Just look at what happened with Starfield. You can’t tell me that game wouldn’t be immensely better if there were just like 8 or even less planets. You don’t need to make things as massive and expensive as possible to make a successful game. You just need to have a good idea with a good execution. I’ll play a game like Deep Rock Galactic or RimWorld over and over again, but I got bored of Destiny within a year or so. Heck, I’ve probably put more hours into the Halo games over my life than I ever will in Destiny.

echodot,

I keep thinking people are going to make my dream game and then they make it too big and then it doesn’t work.

I just want a space game set in a single solar system planets with multiple locations that I can fly around do stuff in. Basically just make the Expanse into game.

But they are always trying to make it the whole sodding universe, and then inevitably say you have FTL, because otherwise it would be boring, and then it turns out that it’s just a bunch of cutscenes playing between various levels and it isn’t a whole cohesive environment at all.

Even Elite Dangerous is guilty of this, although they are much better at hiding it.

Understandable. They haven’t made a good game since Halo Reach.

Prox,

Haven’t they ONLY made Destiny since Reach?

frigidaphelion, do games w Bungie lays off 220 people, will set up spin-off studio

Fuck bungie. I paid for destiny 2 and the first dlc or so, and they literally removed that content and didnt compensate anyone for it. If you’re okay with behavior like that, fuck you too. They’re forever anathema to me.

echodot,

I do not understand why anyone bought Destiny 2, The first game was so uneven and hard to define, was it a MMO or a loot shooter or what, and then they came out with another game without fixing the first one, why would you expect it to be any better?

Hey so our main studio is floundering, lets make another one!

fatmurphy, do games w Bungie lays off 220 people, will set up spin-off studio

Know a guy who is a project manager at bungie. Seems to be constantly doing everything but actually working. Highly paid and when I ask him what he does, he can’t quantify his work. Can’t seem to figure out why their games are always coming out shit nowadays……/s

Fades,

Sounds like a lot of corporate project managers

echodot,

I was in a meeting yesterday where one of our corporate managers admitted he doesn’t actually know what his job is supposed to be.

But realistically is that his fault, or the companies?

I don’t know, embracer has their hand in this.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

They’ve had their hands in plenty of other games, good and bad, including the previous Darksiders.

Viking_Hippie,

So what you’re saying is that it’s doomed?

@tb_@lemmy.world avatar

Nordic Games bought what remained of THQ back in the day when the latter went bankrupt. (THQ used to be comparable to the likes of EA and Ubisoft before they made some poor decisions)

The holdings company behind THQ Nordic rebranded into Embracer some years ago.

meant2live218, do games w New Darksiders game teased by THQ Nordic

Embracer doesn’t really make a game good or bad. The harm they’ve brought to the industry has more to do with their acquisition of studios and then closing them down after realizing they’ve overextended themselves. In the early days, they were looked at as a potential boon to the industry, offering pay stability for studios with their size, but obviously they made some poor choices and have done irreparable damage to many developers’ lives.

drmoose, do games w New Darksiders game teased by THQ Nordic

so they’ve covered all 4 horsemen in the last 4 games:

  • Darksiders 1 - War
  • Darksiders 2 - Death
  • Darksiders 3 - Fury
  • Darksiders Genesis - Strife (+War)

What do you think is next?

Sylvartas,

The original plan was to have all 4 together in a co-op game iirc

warbond,

Dude, seeing the 3 other horsemen come down at the end of the first game had me so fucking hyped

Genesis is a different style of game tho, isn’t it? Diablo-like rather than third-person hack and slash?

Love the series. Personally prefer 3 due to its more limited scope; the other two are great, but to on for a very long time, and I really can’t be bothered playing through the Portal-like bits again. Happy if 4 is the same length as 3.

Please dont be a mobile game or live service

atmur, do games w Wreckfest 2 officially announced at THQ Nordic showcase

Fuck yeah. After Test Drive Solar Crown turned out to be live service garbage, I’ve been waiting for another racing game to look forward to. Hopefully the career mode has a bit more depth than Wreckfest 1.

stembolts,

For similar series, I recommend Burnout and Flatout. See my comment in this thread for elaboration.

Career wise I think Burnout : Paradise City is the most fun of the games I mentioned because you have to go around the city finding hidden jumps, hunting cars roaming the city (when you catch them (by crashing them, of course) you get to drive them), and beating time trials that create unique opportunities to fly through the air and blast through traffic, ideally crashing your opponents into them… anyway, I love the genre, hope you find your game!

atmur,

Oh hell yeah I’ve played almost all of both series.

Flatout 1 is alright, hasn’t aged especially well. Suffers from being completely overshadowed by its sequel in every way.

Flatout 2/Ultimate Carnage is still my favorite Bugbear game, with Wreckfest being a close but firm second.

Flatout 3 is.

Flatout 4 is honestly not terrible, but still feels like a cheap imitation of the first 2 games.

Burnout 1 also suffers from sequel shadow.

Burnout 2 is a great arcade racer that no one talks about because…

Burnout 3 is quite possibly the best arcade racer ever made. Absolute masterpiece.

Burnout Revenge is somehow just as good. Whether I prefer this or 3 depends entirely on how much I enjoy traffic checking on that day. I posted Junkie XL - Today to the music community a few days ago because I was playing Revenge recently, what a soundtrack.

Still haven’t played Dominator, should probably get around to that.

Burnout Paradise is also excellent in its own right, but I think going open world took away some of the charm that the previous games had. Tracks were so well designed in 3 and Revenge. Still love Paradise too, but 3 and Revenge are just absurdly good.

Had a great time playing the first one. I’m looking forward to another.

Sounds great, but could definitely live without the Duke Nukem-style “funny” lines.

stembolts, (edited ) do games w Wreckfest 2 officially announced at THQ Nordic showcase

I adore the Wreckfest game. I played it, beat it, lost my save and was happy because I got to play it again. I think I’ve done that three times.

If you are like me and would like another game in this genre, try “Flatout Ultimate Carnage Collectors Edition”, personally I find the crashing (as well as the racing) in FUCCE to be more satisfying than Wreckfest but both games are a must have for fans of the genre.

The only thing that Wreckfest probably does better is that it feels good on a racing wheel, I’ve never played Flatout on a wheek so I can’t comment on that. Both are fine with a Steam, Xbox controller, or third party controller.

For the record many of the Flatout games are great, I just happen to think that FUCCE is the pinnacle. I would love to be wrong and find a better game so please feel free to share suggestions.

And for a more open world style game with collecting cars, crashing them, and causing carnage as the core theme (you still can’t get out of your car) try Burnout : Paradise City, amazing soundtrack too.

Some of these games have quite unique game modes, the “High Jump” and “Long Jump” in FUCCE is a dumb as hell game and great for having friends compete on the couch.

Burnout has a mode where you have to incrementally take out X opponents before time runs out, X increasing as difficulty rises. And every time you take someone out you get boost so on a perfect run you’re just exploding everyone at light speed lol. Then BAM WALL FUCK. Lol. That’s the game.

And for a final unique game mode, the old Burnout games (not BPD unfortunately) had a mode where you intentionally caused maximum damage per time limit. It was hilarious throwing the car into traffic then dancing it around the city causing hundreds of thousands of damage in a scene so stupid it would have been cut from Final Destination. I think Burnout 1, 2, and 3 had it…
