commander, do games w Helldivers 2 was almost a free-to-play game, could've changed Sony's live service trajectory

That’s pretty much the whole of the article. It was a free to play title until it became a $40 game that would also still operate as a live service game

MoonlightFox, do games w Stardew Valley creator says he might make Stardew Valley 2

I totally get why he prefers to just update SDV.

He is already rich from the original game. He loves expanding on it. People love him for the additional content.

So there is not a huge incentive for him to not just do exactly what he likes and expand SDV indefinitely 😄

Donjuanme,

Rebuilding from code up instead of continuously adding to an overburdened foundation, I don’t know why he’d want to start fresh at all. And he can’t just rebuild and re release because the "mod scene"would pitch a fit

Fuckfuckmyfuckingass, do games w Skyblivion, the fan remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's engine, nears completion

I thought I’d heard a rumor that TES 6 was going to be an Oblivion remake, which would be a dick move on Bethesda’s part if true.

towelie,

Half right. There are credible rumors that they’ll be releasing a remaster of Oblivion soon, which is a separate project from TES 6. And yeah, it’s a major dick move.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

How is it a dick move to remake their own game? I would love that and buy it day one, Oblivion is amazing and it’s very constrained by its PS3/360 era memory limits.

A dick move would be sending a C&D to the Skyblivion team and not letting the remaster/remake stand on its own. Attitudes like this are why most developers don’t even bother with modding support.

LordWiggle,
@LordWiggle@lemmy.world avatar

Bethesda heavily leans on their community to fix their insane amount of issues. When the community comes with a big project, like Fallout London for example, they screw them over by quickly updating the game, breaking the mod, or by releasing their own shitty remake like in this case. They encourage people to work for free for them but they love to screw them over when they do something Bethesda could earn money with or show the shortcomings of that shitty company.

towelie,

You’re not wrong, they are absolutely within their rights, and Skyblivion shouldn’t preclude others from Oblivion projects (especially not the IP holders). But it still rubs me and others the wrong way. Bethesda doesn’t need to do this; they aren’t hurting for cash. It feels petty to jump on the Oblivion remaster train right as this public (free) project, that has been worked on for like a decade, is nearing the end of its production. It’s just slimy behaviour from Bethesda IMO, but I will definitely give them kudos for not issuing a cease and desist.

Virkkunen,
@Virkkunen@fedia.io avatar

How is that a dick move? Bethesda (and other companies) don't owe anything to the very small community of modders of their products, and they certainly aren't doing this rumoured remake out of spite for the Skyblivion team.

MouldyCat,

Bethesda (and other companies) don’t owe anything to the very small community of modders

Disagree. I bought Skyrim VR (even though I already had the non-VR version) only because mods exist which make the game worth playing in VR. Same for Fallout 4 VR - would not have bought that without mods.

Slightly better performance than a 4060 and $50 cheaper. But the 4060 is about to be replaced with a newer model at this point, so is it actually a good deal? Questionable.

inclementimmigrant,

Given that Nvidia said to be upping the prices of their 50XX series and the current 4060 and 7600 cards only offer 8 GB of vram, which honestly is insufficient for modern games now and overpriced, yeah, I do think this will offer decent value to budget gamers.

SupraMario,

The 20xx series was expensive, skipped the 3x/4x and went back to amd. Even though I got my 7900xtx on sale, it still was insanely expensive for a gpu…where are the $500 top gpus gone.

themoonisacheese,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Number for number, sure, if it’s actually available at that price.

The problem is that Intel’s drivers sucked in the past, so they definitely have to prove themselves with this launch. I definitely wouldn’t be buying it release day if I needed a GPU.

TheHobbyist,

With its 8GB, the 4060 performs quite poorly when scaling up the resolution. There’s a great video by hardware unboxed showing how limiting 8GB are, in 1440p.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecvuRvR8Uls

DarkThoughts,

I just can't imagine the extra vram making such a difference in performance that it is enough to play in 1440p, let alone on ultra. I have a 6650 XT, which is slightly slower than the targeted 4060 / 7600 and that thing struggles even in 1080p.

TheHobbyist,

Check the video. It clearly shows how performance drops significantly the moment you run out of vram. It doesn’t meant the performance will be perfect in 1440p, it means Intel is using that as a competition ground, something the 8GB cards fail at and maybe Intel’s GPU isn’t great but the 12GB will probably make a difference (and Intel is maybe being quiet at 1080p because they are likely to perform worse).

etchinghillside, do games w Sony is releasing a new PS5 console, but it's a downgrade

Is 825GB a common size? Is there any logic to where that being picked came from?

inclementimmigrant,

Shareholder value vs executive bonus calculation.

wizardbeard,

Nope.

512+256=768, 768+64=832… minus 7 for system data and general overhead maybe? That’s my best guess, but that’s a really odd size.

zaphod,

Assuming it’s 768GiB, then it would be 824.6GB, not 832GB.

whimsy,

Maybe some overprovisioning for the SSD. But to be honest, I’m not sure

Lyra_Lycan, (edited )

Theory 1: Because it is cheaper to manufacture.
Theory 2: It is custom made for the PS5’s internal 12 data channels, allowing for faster read/write than normal.

They buymake storage with 12 channels, and 1 Toshiba NAND chip @ 512Gib per channel. This means each SSD has 768GiB of storage, or 825GB. The max read bandwidth is 9GB/s.
math: 512Gib x 12ch = 6144Gib / 8 = 768GiB

For reference the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB has 8 channels, and 2 Samsung NAND chips @ 500Gb per channel. This means each SSD has 932GiB of storage, or 1,000GB. The max read bandwidth is 7.5GB/s.
math: (converted to Gib for uniformity) 466Gib x 2 chips = 932Gib x 8ch = 7456Gib / 8 = 932GiB

Key:
Gib = gibibit, 1024⁴ bits
GiB = gibibyte, giga/binary/byte, 1024⁴ x 8 bits
GB = gigabyte, giga(decimal)byte, 1000⁴ x 8 bits

Extra: Storage-based measurements are largely measured in binary bytes but displayed with the decimal abbreviation, hence my C: drive here was sold as 500GB, equal to 465GiB but Windows shows it as 465GB

Right. The only difference between a tariff and a VAT, is that the VAT applies to all products indiscriminately, where as a tariff only applies to imported goods.

Use GrapheneOS with F-Droid or Obtanium, that’s the only way to actually get some freedom on a mobile device nowadays…

winkerjadams,

Just gotta buy a google phone to get some freedom heh

netchami,

Google hardware actually gives you the most freedom, no other Android phone allows you to install a custom operating system, relock the bootloader and use Android Verified Boot, which is a fundamental part of the Android security model, with a custom signing key defined by the custom OS. It also includes the Titan M2 secure element which gives you great security through features like Android StrongBox, the Weaver API and it even has Insider Attack Resistance meaning Google, even if they get a court order to do so, can’t comprise the Titan M. Firmware can only be loaded to the chip after proper user authentication. Yes, it’s a little ironic, but Google hardware gives you the most freedom over your device.

Chainweasel,

I mean, you do unfortunately. Other hardware manufacturers have their phones locked down so hard the GrapheneOS devs won’t even touch them.

WoodScientist, do games w Nintendo confirms $90 price for full Breath of the Wild experience on Switch 2

IDK how to feel about rising video game prices. On the one hand, prices were stagnant for decades. On the other hand, companies can sell far more copies of games than they could back in the 1980s and 1990s. The cost of games is all in the development. The more you sell, the cheaper the price can be. They cost next to nothing to package and distribute (or are distributed digitally.)

On one hand, games are a lot more complex and expansive than they were back in the day. On the other, game devs now have tools the creators of old couldn’t even dream of. No one is hand coding the next Mario game is assembly.

There’s a lot of variables here. And it’s really just hard to make a fair judgment about it.

REDACTED,

They cost next to nothing to package and distribute (or are distributed digitally.)

thermal_shock,

If they’re turning billions of dollars in profit each year, there’s no reason to raise the price. Fuck them

mfed1122,

In many ways I think rising prices could be great, but in reality, they won’t be. With the technology available today, we could have even cooler games than we do, and more games, and more great games. We could have more diverse and experimental games. It would be lovely if solo indie developers were able to make a living from making great games, rather than basically needing to chase a dream akin to getting drafted into the NBA. Game developers are seriously underpaid, it would be great if they got paid as much as other software developers, especially since their work is equally complex and usually more stressful.

In reality, rising game prices will not help with any of those things, and will just make the C-suite richer. The one silver lining is that this may allow small indies to start charging a more livable realistic price for their games.
