They’d make a lot more money if thr priced it at the 20 - 40 range

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

They really wouldn’t. They would have to triple or quadruple sales to take that sort of a hit. As it stands it’s one of the best selling games of all time already, basically everyone interested in it already owns it.

Financially, they made the right decision. As annoying as it is from the consumer side.

mlg,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

That assumes people actually buy it though. Everyone already has this game, so I would expect most of the sales to come from the upgrade pack and not the $90 switch 2 edition. Nintendo usually makes bank by selling old games at full price with a generational console gap.

Tons of the full price successful “remasters” on Switch were Wii games which people no longer used, and Wii U games which no one originally bought.

On the other hand, the last time I didn’t see Nintendo make bank on literally zero effort was never, so I’m not that hopeful that people won’t just shill out for this scam too.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA,
@HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world avatar

i’m interested in it. i don’t own it.

cyberpunk007,

If I were to buy a switch 2, I might consider a rebuy at 20-40, but I’ve already beaten it and I ain’t pain 90$ lmao

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I guess that would be the case if you bought it, beat it and sold it, but most people in that scenario would already own it and then they would just buy the upgrade pack. This $90 option is only for people who don’t own the game in any form yet.

The idea that any significant contingent of people would not own it in any form, then suddenly want to play it on Switch 2 but would balk at the asking price seems unlikely, certainly not enough to cut the price in half.

If they wanted a cheaper option they could always just buy a used Switch copy and then just buy the upgrade pack. I would prefer cheaper Nintendo games too but the reality is this won’t cost them that many sales.

Nath,
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

I bought it second hand. Nintendo got $0 from the sale. In fact, two thirds of our physical games have been purchased second hand.

Critical_Thinker,

You’re literally not their market. That’s why so much of what they focus on are digital only sales, consoles, deals and schemes. They want buy once at full price, never resell.

Nath,
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

I agree with your first statement, but disagree with the rest. I am not their target market. I enjoy playing their games, but primarily because I am spending time with the kids as I do. Not many of their games are targeted to my demographic.

I disagree that they focus only on digital. Every single Nintendo game comes out on a physical chip. And sales on digital copies are rare and minor (30% off maybe). It is often cheaper to get a physical copy on sale cheaper than digital. And you can then sell it / buy it second-hand. I’ve read that with Switch 2, even the digital codes can be transferred to a new owner. Nintendo for all their faults have never forced you to lock in a digital library you can never resell.

Imagine having Skyrim and Oblivion exist

And playing avowed lmao 🤣

samus12345,

Avowed’s story is pretty mid, but it’s still much better than either Oblivion or Skyrim’s.

Exploration-wise, of course Oblivion and Skyrim are better. That’s never been Obsidian’s focus.

Shardikprime,

Lol no , how are you writing that seriously.

The only thing avowed does better than any other game is being a massive turd sandwich 🤣🤣🤣

And that’s good if you like it, but please don’t tell everyone else that you are eating melted chocolate LMAO 🤣

Allero,

As a TES fan, ew. Don’t attack people based on their preferences.

Allero,

I don’t think it’s even possible to untangle storytelling from experience in TES games. Their magic is that they immerse the player in a way no other game ever managed to, in my opinion. Every stone is part of the lore. And when you put those games into the time context they belong, you see the masterpiece.

That said, Avowed did a fairly good job, and storytelling has also advanced in 14 years since the last TES game.

mox, do games w Skyblivion, the fan remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's engine, nears completion

I hope they manage to get it complete, and good. Giving Oblivion another try (this time exploring the rest of the world instead of focusing on the boring main quest) has been on my list for a while, and improved graphics would be welcome.

That font, though… not a good choice for quickly delivering information. Mods to the rescue?

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Funny, for me it’s the other way around. I probably played a couple hundred hours of Oblivion back in the day: modding, exploring and restarting. Never once finished the main quest. I’m thinking Skyblivion might be my chance to finally do it.

Essence_of_Meh,

That’s me with every Bethesda game I played. I don’t even treat them as games to beat, just worlds to run around in.

GreenMartian,

just worlds to run around in

Which, ironically, was why I only played the main quest in Starfield vanilla. Running around empty, boring planets, with copy-pasted dungeons (there’s only, what, 10 varieties?), felt like nothing but a colossal waste of time.

So glad I didn’t pay for it (Gamepass, with apologies to my Linux friends).

Essence_of_Meh,
@Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world avatar

Starfield never really grabbed my attention so I thankfully dodged a bullet with that one.

So glad I didn’t pay for it (Gamepass, with apologies to my Linux friends).

No need to apologise, people should have the option to play games however they want.

CarbonBasedNPU,

I got through about half the main story before the load-door-load-fastravel-load-door-load made me just give up. I learned later you can directly fast travel from the map but for some reason when I tried it initially it didn’t work and thought you had to go to your ship everytime.

Katzenmann, do games w Intel Arc B580 'Battlemage' GPU announced - 1440p Ultra gaming for $249

Do these cards have good open-source Linux drivers?

mox,

The comments I’ve read from current-generation Arc owners have given the impression that their Linux drivers are catching up to AMD. Here’s the latest info:

www.phoronix.com/…/intel-arc-b580-battlemage

kippinitreal,

As an aside knowing most companies working in embedded technologies usually work in, or have strong aspects in Linux. Why then are Linux drivers so difficult to come by? Lack of customers seems unlikely since they mostly have everything ready, right? Or is it cost cutting to avoid lengthy QA on another platform? That would be easy to sidestep by giving a no-warranty driver version?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

Most of the demand is for Windows. So if your choice is to spend resources (money) where demand is, or hope that you can possibly create demand where there isn’t any currently.

doggle,

Been a while but I played around with the a770 in Arch for a few months. It didn’t play nice with proton and even native games were hit and miss. Better support from Intel than nvidia gives, but it’s a new platform and Linux development was definitely taking a back seat to the windows drivers which were also a buggy mess.

And basically nobody had the cards so if something didn’t work your options were to give up or become a computer graphics programming wizard and fix it all yourself from scratch.

To answer the question: not really, no. The drivers themselves may have been fine, but who knows how any given software will handle a brand new GPU architecture.

dinckelman, do games w Intel Arc B580 'Battlemage' GPU announced - 1440p Ultra gaming for $249

Hopefully it will bring some decent generational improvements. The only thing i’m not a huge fan of is the 45% price increase over lasts gen, which isn’t even putting used or discounted cards into consideration

Kbobabob, (edited )

The last equivalent card was $112$172?

Edit: I’ve been corrected. That still seems incredibly low.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

$249 is 45% more than $172.

Kbobabob,

Haha, you’re right. Brain fart.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

Original MSRP of the A770 was $330 so that is a big improvement. I assume intel is sticking with a reasonable launch MSRP to set expectations right.

tomshardware.com/…/intel-arc-a750-a770-full-prici…

dinckelman,

The A580 launched at 175$+tax. We are not talking about the same card

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

…I completely forgot that was even a thing. It came out and nobody really cared. Only the 770/750 got love, and the a380 saw some appreciation for being the quicksync addon card.

Well regardless it’s the same MSRP as the A770 post price drop, and still outperforms it.

The first and only console I bought was the original Wii. Games were expensive so I did not have many. I managed to install a few emulators and use it for older console emulation.

After some years they started pulling the plug on the online services. That’s when I decided I would never buy another console again. I will not feed any more walled gardens. I have more games than I can play on my PC, a lot of them are DRM free.

NuXCOM_90Percent, (edited ) do games w Japan's prime minister is mad about Assassin's Creed Shadows where players can destroy the contents of religious sites

Considering what a shitshow tourists are in Japan? I completely get why they would comment on this rather than just say “It is a video game, who cares? Next question”.

Last time I was in Kyoto I swear a local priest/monk was about to throw some 'bows when a German tourist an his family just walked straight across a zen garden.

Still, the endless chud culture war is always incredibly tiring. And here I am playing Rise of the Ronin instead (the PC port is ass but it is functional ass!). Chuds hate it because women exist. They SHOULD hate it because you can totally gay seckz Sakamoto Ryoma but that would involve knowing anything about the game that isn’t in a launch trailer. Sort of like how Nioh “got away with” acknowledging the existence of Yasuke because all the chuds tuckered themselves out before finding out he was in that.

So sad that Rockstar now too is “one of those”, but that is what always happens when small companies making great products grown into large corporations. Gta6 will be shit, it will ring in the end for Rockstar and nobody at the exec level at Rockstar willl care because they will have filled their pockets and can jump ship.
