Noodle07, do games w Microsoft is combining “the best of Xbox and Windows together” for handhelds

They obviously mean steamOS haha

Critical_Thinker, do games w Nvidia Announces RTX 50's Graphic Card Blackwell Series: RTX 5090 ($1999), RTX 5080 ($999), RTX 5070 Ti ($749), RTX 5070 ($549)

The far cry benchmark is the most telling. Looks like it’s around a 15% uplift based on that.

Subverb,

About two months ago I upgraded from 3090 to 4090. On my 1440p I basically couldn’t tell. I play mostly MMOs and ARPGs.

darthsid,

Shouldn’t have upgraded then….

Critical_Thinker,

Those genres aren’t really known for having brutal performance requirements. You have to play the bleeding edge stuff that adds prototype graphics postprocessing in their ultra or optional settings.

When you compare non RT performance the frame delta is tiny. When you compare RT it’s a lot bigger. I think most of the RT implementations are very flawed today and that it’s largely snake oil so far, but some people are obsessed.

I will say you can probably undervolt / underclock / power throttle that 4090 and get great frames per watt.

I think it's going to be a long time before I upgrade my graphics card with these prices.

illi, do games w Sony is working on Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 movies

Wasn’t there a Horizon show that was cancelled recently?

simple,

Yeah, that confused me as well. It seems like they’re making a movie instead.

Templa, do gaming w Nintendo and Pokémon are suing Palworld maker Pocketpair

I understand and participate in the hate against Nintendo but Palworld was a game with such bad taste for me that I am just grabbing the popcorn on this one. For anyone surprised regarding the patents, for Tears of the Kingdom alone, Nintendo tried to file at least 30 patents. I have no idea how many they must have for mechanics from Pokémon.

MoogleMaestro,

Without a doubt, Patents and Software are a bad mix.

But there’s definitely a truth to the idea that Palworld in particular were aiming for a legal battle against Nintendo from the beginning with provocative action. There’s a reason why Nintendo has rarely gone after Pokemon-likes but have decided that this particular company is worth pursuing.

This is kind of a lose-lose situation. Palworld was clearly kit-bashing existing Pokemon models and were engaging in creative bankruptcy, but software/game patents serve only to hurt creatives and developers around the world and Japan in particular is poor around SLAP suits.

So, I agree, grab the popcorn. But I hope that whatever patents they’re choosing to enforce here don’t have a major ripple in game development as a whole. There’s a world with the brazen IP theft of palworld actually does us all a disservice by making it an easier case for Nintendo to enforce Patents that would otherwise be unenforceable or difficult purely out of optics.

djidane535, do games w Sony announces the PS5 Pro with a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI upscaling
@djidane535@sh.itjust.works avatar

At the beginning of this generation, I planned to buy a used PS5 when the Pro version was coming. I did not know that the PS5 would have almost no games for me (especially because they released the big ones for me on PC), the base PS5 would cost even more, and most people will not upgrade to the Pro because of its absurd pricing (note because it’s not worth it, but because the market for it is likely very niche).

I guess I will just skip Sony’s platform for this generation.

realitista, do gaming w Here are all the games enhanced by PS5 Pro

I can’t imagine who would ever pay $700 to upgrade from a ps5 for this.

GrindingGears,

I bought a PS5 earlier this year that’s just collecting dust. I guess I didn’t realize or appreciate until after purchase that there is very few actual PS5 titles. There is no way in hell I would consider a PS5 Pro with their current library.

delitomatoes,

One game, I don’t know why

bermuda, do gaming w Here’s how much Valve pays its staff — and how few people it employs

Easy to employ so few when you dont rarely make games anymore

teawrecks,

They had the same or fewer employees when they were making games, though.

bermuda,

Wow!

Not surprising. Either this was their long game or MS is in crisis mode, because lately they haven’t been doing so hot.

A one handed controller. That certainly will have some uses.

pacoboyd, do games w EA just added classics like Dungeon Keeper, SimCity 3000, and Populous on Steam

Used to play the crap out of some Populous (all of them) was a great game. Not giving EA any money though. Just get them on GoG so you don’t rent them.

@Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I’d forgotten about Populous, used to play it on my Amiga back in the day. It was the first. RTS type game I played iirc.
