drmoose, do games w Nexus Mods' new owners promise they won't monetise the site to death as users panic at the whiff of venture capital

As a software engineer i always found nexus simply archaic. Hot take but the molding industry might be better off with a new mod index.

hazl,

Here’s how it goes with half the games I mod these days.

  1. Game not manageable in Vortex out of the box
  2. Find the extension that makes the game manageable
  3. All popular mods are based on one single mod that acts as a framework or SDK for those other mods
  4. That prerequisite mod isn’t well maintained on Nexus, and the author recommends using $otherModManager to manage this game
drmoose,

Funny how all of that is straight up solved with any package manager or even git itself (with submodules) for free and yet gaming community is protecting some proprietary burning heap of garbage.

pory,
@pory@lemmy.world avatar

The main problem in your setup is you installed Vortex. It and its prior incarnation Nexus Mod Manager have always been a thorn in actual mod developers’ sides. Mod devs can easily tell you where to extract the zip to, and what dependencies you need. Any load order manager type thing will always be better when designed specifically for the game you’re running. Having an “easy one click GUI!!!” doesn’t actually help anybody because modding different games isn’t a universally systematic process.

Blaiz0r,

It should all be open source.

First thing is mods should just exist on free hosting providers for source code like GitHub/Lab etc.

Then an optional mod manager software that can import mods from these sources.

Non of this really needs a centralised community, these places already exist thanks to other better suited services like social media

Ibuthyr,

But social media is 95% turbocancer…

Blaiz0r,

I mean things like Discord and Revolt, even Reddit is better for communities to discuss things about mods than the Nexus site

Ibuthyr,

I didn’t down vote you, but Discord is a huge offender regarding enshittification of the internet. Reddit might even be worse.

Blaiz0r,

That’s not my point though, they’re much better at holding discussion and keeping people updated than the Nexus mods site was

And so the hell-loop continues. Matrix seems like the closest successor, but having used it for awhile I would describe the experience as janky-but-workable. Signal’s good, but requires a phone number. I hear that Mumble’s good, but it’s overly focused on VoIP. Hopefully the alternatives polish themselves up before the enshittification gets too bad.

MaggiWuerze,

You can nowadays create a signal account without a phone number, you’ll get a user name instead

OneRedFox,
@OneRedFox@beehaw.org avatar

Oh? When did they change that?

nixnoodle,

I also thought you could create an account without your phone number nowadays, but since I already have a phone-connected account, I haven’t tested. Only thing I found in their blog was this: signal.org/blog/phone-number-privacy-usernames/

Until now, someone needed to know your phone number to reach you on Signal. Now, you can connect on Signal without needing to hand out your phone number. (You will still need a phone number to register for Signal.) This is where usernames come in.

There are some newer post about other changes, but I haven’t checked them in detail.

Pretty recently I think

Kichae,

There’s a huge opportunity not just for Matrix, but also for other open source or distributed players here, if they can move quickly enough.

They won’t, though.

biteychan,

I use Matrix, but like a lot of the Fediverse (I know it’s technically a different protocol, but still), it’s not normie friendly. If it were more plug n play it might take off. I just don’t look forward to when they’ll have ads or start making us pay. It’s so tiring shuffling from platform to platform because of some greedy CEO.

Diablo had great lighting effects. In the catacombs you’d see a flash of movement in the dark, before being attacked by a goat demon who had used the darkness to get around behind you. The later instalments in the series made enemies much more visible, and lost something for it.

grrgyle,

Yes! I was trying to explain this at a PoE 2 launch party but no one got it. I know Diablo is likely dated in a lot of ways, but unlike with other entries, I remember actually getting scared while playing it. Like it actually felt like overcoming an ordeal.

You play as doge and collect dogecoins to spend on memes. The game is called X and it runs a crypto miner on your gpu when you play it (you get coins in game, Elon gets coins in real life).

bassomitron, do games w To appease a Steam user's demands for straight representation, Webfishing added a 'Straight' title that costs 9,999 fish bucks

Straight representation? Lol, what? Like every major branching choice RPG with romance options offers plenty of hetero choices (Witcher, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldurs Gate, Cyberpunk 2077, etc). Even in Veilguard, the first AAA game I’ve played that offers nonbinary choices, still has plenty of hetero representation. Culture wars are so god damn exhausting and unwinnable.

Draconic_NEO,
@Draconic_NEO@lemmy.world avatar

Many of their games do have native linux versions, and a lot do work under wine or proton, which can be used as a Non-steam game in Steam or even without Steam.

Their launcher doesn’t yet have a native linux version but it’s completely optional, and does still run under wine if you really want it.

Anticorp,

If I’m not going to use their game manager, then why would I buy the game from them instead of just buying it directly from the game studio? I guess because game studios rarely distribute their own games anymore?

Whitebrow,

Exactly, the game publishers and distributors are often not the developers themselves. Only one to distribute direct in recent memory was World Of Goo 2, and even that was sold primarily through the Epic store.

histic,

Tarkov is only direct to my knowledge

Cethin,

If it works on Steam it works on GOG. Nothing about proton is limited to Steam.

Anticorp,

There’s a Linux specific Steam program though. Is there a Linux specific GOG program?

Cethin,

You mean a native version of GOG? I don’t think so, but you can use it through Lutris.

Donut,

It’s only 30 people that have pledged the $14,670. This almost averages to $500 per backer, which is a lot higher than the normal average.

Now refunded it seems. The person probably contributed to say it’s a scam, like some of the other backers in the comments.

We’ve noticed that some backer’s contributions to our Kickstarter may not have the best intentions behind them, and we want to ensure that all support is genuine and positive. With this in mind, we have decided to return the 12k SGD so that the funds can be put to better use by their owner

Microsoft and Epic take less because they have less. Both their ecosystems are shit. They are also trying to get into the market, once they own a decent share of it they are hiking that right back up. Gaben is smart leaving it how it always has been, while continuously improving the platform.

People don’t like the 30%, but they are still choosing steam because it’s the better platform. Epic and co are the ones who make things exclusive and try to corner the market.

The article points to a “similar case with sony”, but it’s not similar really. Sony has exclusives too.

This entire article is shit and there’s no victim here, except Microsoft and Epic maybe. This is a class action lawsuit nobody asked for.

Prey retroactively devaluaed Dishonored for me - as amazing as those were at their time, Prey showed what really could be obtained from the formula, and perfected every aspect of it.

bananabenana,

Oh same here. Great way to put it. Prey is a masterpiece

darthsid, (edited )

Controversially - I loved Dishonoured and the sequel but couldn’t figure out Prey

SmoothOperator,

Same. Prey feels much more related to Bioshock than Dishonored to me. Never could get into Bioshock.

ClaireDeLuna,

It’s far more different than BioShock. BioShock is imo a linear shooter I never understood the “immersive sim” tag for BioShock. But Prey is non linear within a space station. You can break away from the main task whenever you want and investigate other things which all play into the main story. You can play Prey 10-20 times and have a different journey each time if you try. The Gloo Gun, Mimicry, etc are all things that allow you to play differently each time and find unique new paths. Talos 1 is chock full of details. The only similarity with BioShock is the reveal, the wrench, and some minor combat similarities. But it’s far more than that.

MurrayL,

I think BioShock just got grandfathered in through its System Shock lineage.

SmoothOperator,

It’s for sure not the same as BioShock, with traversal and exploration the biggest difference, but it has similar vibes, at least as far as I have played. And at least in comparison with Dishonored.

You’re (mostly) alone in a giant, isolated station where a terrible disaster has happened, and must inject yourself with magic goo to be able to handle it’s warped former inhabitants. There’s definitely more of a stealth vibe than in Bioshock, but the feeling was similar for me.

In contrast, Dishonored takes place all over a crowded city with regular interactions between NPC’s which you can manipulate from the shadows. Most enemies can be killed or KO’d very straightforwardly, and there’s just much more of a revenge power fantasy about it.

But I digress. I can understand the comparisons to Dishonored, they just aren’t that similar in my mind.

ClaireDeLuna,

Arkane games are always those games that require the “click” to enjoy.

I started every single Arkane title and stopped it for months before the world and what not pulled me back. That second time I finally get it and enjoy the hell out of the game more than before.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Should have called it Neuroshock as it would have been a great tie with the other “shock” immersive sims

We were still reeling the loss of Prey 2 and the political duplicity that may or may not have happened with Bethesda and Human Head which resulted in the cancellation.

Calling it “Prey” was fucking poison
