yokonzo, do games w What is your favorite Assassin's Creed game?

AC 1 & 2, I know they’re pretty jank now and black flag stole the show, but it was entrancing for young me, it felt like I was entering another world. I would no shit just wander the world for hours just taking in the simulated culture and learning how people lived, it was so fascinating to see how life was back then. I guess that’s why AC3 bored me so much, American history is just not interesting to me as it’s so recent relatively

Zarxrax, do games w What do you think about random encounters?

I don’t really like random battles for the most part, but they are not normally the thing that makes or breaks a game for me, either.

Some of the first jrpgs that I remember handling battles better then the typical final fantasy was Chrono Trigger and Pokemon. In Chrono Trigger, you can typically see the enemies before you have to fight them, though they would often surprise you with enemies that you couldn’t see jumping out. I think that worked much better than just the normal system where if you walk around long enough you get a battle. Then Pokemon has 2 different things that it did. First, for trainer battles, you can see the trainers on screen so you can make sure you are prepared before you go into a fight. Then for the normal battles around the world, it does use random encounters, but they take place ONLY within certain spots, like in tall grass or in a cave. So you still have a lot of freedom to roam around in areas without triggering battles, and when you do go through those spots, you know that a battle could pop up, so you can be ready for it. There are also items you can use to avoid encounters.

For dealing with the annoyance of low level enemies, I think Earthbound had a pretty good system. In Earthbound, it shows you enemies on screen rather than doing random encounters, and once you get to a significantly higher level than the enemies, they will run away from you instead of coming at you, so you are free to just ignore them.

droning_in_my_ears,

I agree these games made big improvements but I still see them as bandages to the inevitable problems that came with random encounters. There’s no undoing the interruption of flow you know.

I think it’s a tradeoff though like I said. Because I don’t know how you can have a combat system as cool and creative as say Undertale (blending turn based and realtime bullet hell) or battle network (blending turn based, real time and card game) without it being completely separate from the overworld.

NocturnalMorning, do games w how is final fantasy XVI

I loved ff16, some people don’t like the batte system, but I found it to be really fast paced, and made me feel like I was a badass. The story us pretty good, in my opinion.

On the flip side, my friend played it and said it was fun, but the story was predictable.

Pantsofmagic, do games w how is final fantasy XVI

It reminds me in a lot of ways of FFXIV. It was made by a lot of the same people so that’s no surprise. It’s fairly dark but it’s a good story. The expansions are way too short - I had hoped they’d add more depth to some of the back story.

I enjoyed the game a lot in spite of its shortcomings. It doesn’t have as much “extra stuff” to do as many other final fantasies but the core game is solid.

I ended up picking up the PC version to play through again. The PS5 version is held back a lot by the platform.

_sideffect, do games w Fallout London - I just can't anymore

Do I have to play fallout 4 first before I start this?

femtech,

No, it’s self contained.

_sideffect,

Nice, so a completely unrelated story right?

femtech,

Not related story but it’s a fallout 4 mod so you need the gam and all dlcs to play it

_sideffect,

Cool, I already have the game and all that, so I’m set!

BradleyUffner,

There are references, in-jokes, and shared lore, but you won’t be missing much if you jump right in.

PP_BOY_, do games w What is your favorite Assassin's Creed game?

Black Flag, followed closely by 3. It doesn’t hurt that those were released right at the peak of my interest in gaming, but I replayed BF within the past two years and it still holds up super well

@Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world avatar

I only properly played 1, 2 and a bit of Black Flag but based on that and what I’ve seen from all the other games I’m gonna stick with the first one.

Investigations were… well actual investigation, gameplay mechanics while simple and satisfying weren’t overly automated and the game wasn’t burdened with all the bloat that came afterwards. Simplified movement system from later games, one that’s fighting you whenever you try to do something even a little out of game’s comfort zone, is probably my major sticking point with the series.

That said, I’m not sure if that would be the best choice for you. If you want to try the classic approach I’d suggest going with the Ezio trilogy (II, Brotherhood, Revelations) as these games are more polished, if a little bloated, compared to the first game. They should still hold up well enough to have fun.

I agree with points 1, 1 and 2, but hard disagree on point 1

ModernRisk, do games w Jedi Survivor could have been great

Glad to read this post, tampering my expectations for Jedi Survivor.

I’m currently busy with Fallen Order and struggling to push through it. Platforming is fun but (for me) the story feels a bit meh and the map is awful. Debating to put down Fallen Order and just jump into Jedi Survivor directly. Since people told me, it isn’t necessary to have played the first game.

PunchingWood, (edited )

The maps from Fallen Order (specifically Zeffo) were one of the biggest complaints that they fixed in Survivor. It was an absolute hellhole to navigate and shortcuts were often hard to get by.

Survivor is practically by all accounts a big improvement over Fallen Order, although I think I enjoyed the bosses in Fallen Order a little bit more, those seemed a bit more challenging than in Survivor.

Edit: I’d recommend finishing the first game though, the final act is quite amazing and while it isn’t necessary to have played the first game, the story in Survivor still connects to stuff that happened in FO a lot.

Ilandar, do gaming w What are the scariest games you've played?

I found 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors to be very unsettling. I played it in bed at night with headphones on and it totally sucked me in. I guess this is a different type of horror to many of the games suggested here, which I personally don’t find scary.

Megaman_EXE,

Ohh I’ve wanted to play the zero escape series at some point. I didn’t realize it could be unsettling! Cool I will put it on the list, thanks!

Ilandar,

The first game is much creepier than the second, I think due to a combination of the character designs, the writing and the general plot. The second game feels more akin to Danganronpa, in that the characters and setting are a bit surreal. Because it was a 3DS game, it also uses cartoony 3D models that make everything a bit lighter and less gritty than the original game. I haven’t played the third one yet (still need to get around to 100% completing the second game).

I am not a fan of horror games all that much, and Half-Life Alyx is not one, but the horror elements are stronger than previous titles and I still haven’t finished the game because of that. The game is incredible, but I just can’t get past the scary parts.

Cuttlersan,

“Hey there, Jeff” (0.0) that bit had me stuck for a month until I decided to push through it!

I played so many games on my Palm Pilot back in middle school. My Palm Tungsten T3 was great, and there were a shitload of freeware or shareware games released over the years.

I had a Sega GameGear as a kid. Yeah it was a Sega system, which Sega was major back then, but the GameGear was nothing compared to the Gameboy. Very cool system, in that it had a full color screen and was backlit.

Now that was at the expense of being heavy as all hell and a monster eater of AA batteries. 6 of them at at time!

I think that was basically the only non-major system I had.

sleepybisexual,

Well, I’d still see it as major. That said it is cool :3
