Coelacanth, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of October 19th

I think I might have relapsed. Send help. Everything was going so well, I was playing through the Final Draft of Alan Wake 2 and having the time of my life, and then I clicked on a video YouTube recommended in my feed that looked interesting and the familiar old craving kicked in. Suddenly a week had passed by and I was deep in the rabbit hole again.

So this week I’ve mostly been modding STALKER: Anomaly. There’s been so many new mods and modpacks and even engine optimization released since I played it last and I’m having a blast getting reacquainted, this time basing my modlist on the H.A.C.R. pack which seems to be a flexible and solid base. I’ve already added about 30 mods to it.

I also have to give special mention to the mod and video that kicked it all off - TALKER. It transcribes your voice talking into the mic, and uses AI to give responses from characters in game and it’s actually just so much fun to use, especially for someone like me who loves the role-play and emergent narratives and storytelling of Anomaly. Right now I haven’t even started a full playthrough yet as I’m still tweaking parameters for the AI to fine tune the prompts given to each faction as well as adding to the list of unique personalities.

If you’re an Anomaly player, I definitely recommend checking out TALKER, even though setting it up is a little annoying.

MrScottyTay, (edited ) do games w Do you feel Crash Team Racing was better than Mario Kart?

It’s better but it’s onboarding is worse. Figuring out the drift boosting is harder than figuring it out for Mario kart with the latter feeling like riding a bike and easy to get back into the muscle memory time and time again.

However, whenever you’ve got the feeling of how CTRs works, It feels better than Mario karts. Giving you more control and more engagement in the moment to moment.

Sometimes i bounce off CTR when coming back to it after a very long time going to just play it for a bit but fumble a bunch of drifts and feel like i can’t be arsed trying to figure it out again currently and just play something else with what little time i had currently.

Monster Hunter World - IceborneI can’t stop! The game is such a marathon…

I think I’m about halfway through and I’m starting to find the difficult spike a bit much so I’m focussing on some easier optional quests to get materials for upgrades which is quite nice as I get through them quickly.

I love how the game looks and feels, prefer it to Rise, but I think I prefer the combat in Rise. The problem with MHWI is the new clutch claw mechanic, it makes monsters get staggered during a fight and leaves them out of distance so you have to use the claw, it really breaks the rhythm of the game, plus they have inflated the monster health massively in Master Rank to compensate for the new mechanic which means fights can take ages if you don’t take advantage of the clutch claw moves perfectly.

Looking forward to Monster Hunter Wilds at some point in the future.

Funny you bring it up. When Mario Kart introduced the coins, I immediately thought of the Wumpa Fruits in even the first CTR.

I read it as Nintendo running out of ideas. But it seems the Switch 2 Mario Kart adding the cross country game mode is somewhat more novel than the coins.

Just took 26 years. Lol Nintendo doesn’t put much effort into their games anymore. I checked out the new Pokemon game and it was so soulless

cfi,

Coins were part of the original Super Mario Kart, they disappeared after that

kmacmartin, do games w Games with Text-based Interaction?

Moonring uses natural language for interacting with NPCs and progressing the game (though you aren’t actually controlling them, and there are different gameplay elements so I’m not sure if it would fit the bill?). It uses word matching, but has a really cool system where you’ll get bubbles with suggestions based on other information you’ve uncovered (and then there’s hidden stuff you can ask/say as well).

It’s free on that note, so you could try and decide without having to invest more than time: store.steampowered.com/app/2373630/Moonring/

tiramichu,

Looks interesting in other respects too, thanks for the suggestion

Played Fatal Frame I was really enjoying it up until the third night, where there’s a huge difficulty spike and I fear I’m stuck there due to not having resources. I might restart it some other time, but I’ve decided to play something else.

So I played Still Wakes the Deep. I found it to be pretty mediocre: the story and acting were fine, but I couldn’t really connect to the characters. The gameplay is so scripted and simple the monster encounters had no tension as they were basically on rails. Doesn’t help that the monster design is forgettable and they mostly look like flesh blobs.

I’m currently playing Resident Evil Village and Project Diva.

Coral island! Simpler than stardew but very pretty very wholesome and perfect for controllers

What about touch? Phone or tablet.

If you have an Apple device and Apple Arcade, Stardew Valley is free.

Settlers. Spend ungodly amount of hours in first and second.

Impossible Creatures was so much fun, especially with friends. I also thought Age of Empires III was very good, even if it was pretty different from II.

Great article, thank you for sharing

What are your individual development backgrounds and day jobs (if any)

I’m currently a PhD candidate at the french atomic energy comission (CEA).

this is literally the last response I would expect. I assumed all emulator developers had boring software engineering jobs

megopie, do gaming w What is the most overrated game gamers hype up?

Balatro.

It is a mechanically very dense game. There is a lot of depth and complexity to its gameplay. I get why a lot of people enjoy that. But I just kind of bounce off that, I need something to motivate me to engage with game mechanics. I need a story, or like, some kind of theming that I can project a goal on to. Poker but weird just doesn’t do it for me.

Like I adore paradox games, but I can project a broad world buildy-esq self built narrative and goals on to that, even when the mechanics are as broad as an ocean but as deep as a puddle.

Deyis, do gaming w What is the most overrated game gamers hype up?

Red Dead Redemption 2

It’s the same old Rockstar formula of having you travel back and forth over the map just to do a normal mission and falls short of giving the cowboy fantasy everyone touts it as being. They added enough detail that your horse’s balls shrink in the cold but made it so easy to get money that whilst your merry band of outlaws are complaining about how little they have, I struggled to find more things to buy with immense hoards of cash. And the bounty system doesn’t work. And the multiplayer was total ass. And part way through the fantastical cowboy simulator, it adds goofy sidequests of time travel and robots. Rockstar couldn’t decide what to make the game so they tried to make it everything, leaving it lacklustre.
