I have played and enjoyed every single Final Fantasy game. Even XIII has some great stuff going for it. The series strong suit is that it’s never stale. Each game is a fresh, new take on a somewhat familiar net of design philosophies.

My favourite is XII. I love its job and gambit system, as well as the world design and music. IX comes just a tiny bit short, then V, probably.

I like the trend of invisible UI. It keeps the display free of clutter and persistent UI elements (hello, OLED) and doesn’t hinder usability at all. I hide scroll bars whenever possible because middle clicking is far more convenient than click-dragging. Hidden elements always appear by using a related action–moving the mouse reveals the play bar, scrolling reveals the scroll bar. It’s completely intuitive. I even remove the forward, backward and reload buttons on my browser because gestures and shortcuts are just faster.

UIs are near-universally as clean and functional as ever… at least on macOS. Windows appears to be a clusterfuck. Linux is alright.

I really like the DualSense, Xbox Duke and Wii U gamepad. Two oddballs. The Wii U gamepad is nice and large, and the Duke is… nice and large.

“Any SNES game” is pretty much just F-ZERO.

Actually, fun fact: F-ZERO runs at a locked 60FPS for every single release. SFC, N64, GBA and GC. It’s some really impressive stuff for N64.

I don’t know how weak you’re talking, but Horizon Zero Dawn has that same engaging, high skill ceiling combat that BOTW/TOTK does. The minimum specs don’t look too bad, and the game is quite well optimised. Forbidden West is probably a no-go, though, and it’s a much better game which serves as a true direct sequel. They’re great if you like story, too.

Crisis Core is the only PSP game I’ve played. It’s pretty good. I suppose Monster Hunter is worth trying out, too.

I just recently finished Final Fantasy XVI and I think its GOTY nomination was well earned, despite its shortcomings. A hell of a journey.
