As I have plenty of time due to reasons, I decided to continue Red Dead Redemption 2 after not having played it for a year or so. Damn, that thing just looks great.

AstralPath, do gaming w Am I the only person that feels that retro games are better?

I’d say that in my experience, retro games or games with a retro design philosophy tend to be more enjoyable and replayable. The nostalgia helps with that, but I think a big part of it is never having to tinker with graphics settings or anything technical. You just boot it up and play.

I’d personally consider anything older than 2005 to be a retro game (or at least retro-adjacent) in my library. It feels like around that time there was a major shift in how games were made; some really benefiting from the new design philosophies but many falling very short of their hype and ultimate goals.

For me the biggest problem with modern games is the obsession with high fidelity graphics. The dev teams that create games without a focus on photo-realism or jaw dropping visuals are often the teams creating the best games in my eyes. See Heart Machine, ConcernedApe, Polytron, Ludeon Studios, Maddy Makes Games, etc…

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of good modern games. The retro design philosophy just resonates much stronger with me when I just wanna sit down and enjoy something. Shoutout to Maxis for making SimCity 4, that game is sucking up the hours lately. lol

MudMan,

Maybe it's me being old, but I've been hearing "the problem with modern games is they put graphics over gameplay" since 1991.

I don’t like chiptune music, where music is designed to sound like it’s being played on an old console’s frequency synthesizer.

I think that there are some good arguments for low-resolution pixel art in terms of reducing asset cost while still having a playable game – the brain is good at filling details in. But I don’t think that that applies to music, that there are good cost trade-offs.

And while I don’t have a problem with low-resolution pixel art graphics, I do have to say that for some of the successful games that I’ve played with it, I’d really like to be able to buy an HD graphics pack. I’m kind of surprised by how infrequently it is that I’ve seen game devs do that. Cave Story did it. I’d like to see some games like Caves of Qud have HD DLC.

AstralPath,

See Hyper Light Drifter for a retro-style game with an unbelievably deep soundtrack. Fez also has an amazing soundtrack. Both are nods to chiptune but with incredibly modern production techniques.

I think this is very much down to personal taste. While I don’t think a great game needs photo-realistic graphics, for me a game’s graphics do factor into my enjoyment of it, so it should at least feel like the devs put some effort into making the game visually appealing. That could be focusing on making the graphics beautiful, or stylised and quirky, or just incredibly cute. But if I’m gonna spend hours looking at something, I want it to look nice.

If you're cool with lower poly graphics, ADACA was recently recommended to me. Haven't tried it yet but looks to be set in Pacific Northwest.

Not saying this is a good one but Splatoon on switch you manipulate the music speed and pitch with the analogue sticks.

In preparation of the Mists of Pandaria Turbo Mode in like 10 days, I'm playing World of Warcraft, and catching up on all the stuff I missed in the last three years. So far, I've leveled two characters to 70, although I skipped all dialogue and cutscenes. I just don't care at all about this stuff in this game.

I gotta be honest though, while the quest progression while leveling is fine, once you're done and max level it becomes a complete clusterfuck. Since this is the tail end of the expansion, all the story content that has been released in the last 18 months, just gets dumped on you. You just get tons of new story quests. One third of which you can't start, because you need some reputation level with a faction or something. Another third needs a previous story to be done first, and the last third you can actually do. Your quest log is full of all that useless bloat, and it becomes a nightmare to sort through. Then there are tons of quests that are supposed to introduce you to the various new mechanics that were added, but those basically drown in the sea of all the other shit. I'm not the biggest fan of the forced story and gating of everything behind it in FF14, but at least I never needed a guide to find out which campaign quest I should do next. Also, important quests that unlock stuff are usually marked with a different color indicator, so they aren't hard to miss. That's something Blizzard should definitely copy. Luckily I have a bunch of friends, who play the game continuously, who I can ask about the most important stuff, otherwise I'd be lost.

I'm really into collecting pets and pet battles in the game, so I've been spending a lot of time flying around, catching everything new, etc. I wonder why Blizzard never added pet battles to the companion app or released it separately for mobile. Back in the day, I'd definitely spent a bunch of time just doing random battles (and would probably still now). I might have to look into setting up the game on my Steam Deck and try out just exploring, catching all the pets, or do the simple quests.

AceFuzzLord, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

Analog stick. Most of the time I end up finding that the dpad on my 360 controller doesn’t feel as good to me compared to as an analog stick. That, and the majority of games I used to play growing up used analog stick for movement, so it’s engrained in me.

EmpiricalFlock,
@EmpiricalFlock@beehaw.org avatar

Part of the issue there is actually the 360 controller, from my experience. It has one of the worst D-pads ever made. That said, platformers and fighting games are typically the only ones I use a D-pad on anyway, so if you don’t play those you’d likely never use it.

AdellcomdoisL, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

As with most, depends on the game. 2D I generally prefer D-pad, even if the game has 8 directions. For 3D, there’s really no choice.

My cursed option: I like playing fighting games with the d-pad.

Also a stray opinion: I hate games that mix the two on moment to moment gameplay. Using D-pad for pause menus while moving with the Analog, fine. Using d-pad to use items during live gameplay, like in soulslikes? Terrible.

overload,

I would have thought Dpad was the obvious choice for fighting games due to combo button combinations. Is it more common for players to use the joystick?

AdellcomdoisL,

A fightstick is the ideal for anyone wanting to invest in the genre, as it provides both precise control and a wide array of movements that neither d-pad or analog can reach.

It was a joke-y cursed option because d-pad are not only wildly uncomfortable but also quite inefficient when it comes to the high speed sequences

Skelemental,

@AdellcomdoisL @overload there are plenty of top players using gamepads in the fighting game community these days. As it transitioned online and arcades sort of disappeared entirely there is less bias toward fightsticks emulating the arcade cabinet experience. Not to say they aren’t still the popular choice but gamepads aren’t considered garbage like they were.

cook_pass_babtridge,

Yeah I play fighting games on both an 8bitdo fight stick and a PS4 d-pad. I’m still not sure which I prefer. Fight stick feels more accurate but I can react much faster with a d-pad.

I’m still not very good at these games though, so I can’t speak for people at a high level!

saigot, do gaming w Dpad vs analog stick

I prefer Dpad for platforming and top down as being able to move precisely diagonal is more important than speed control, plus the analogue stick wears out quicker and dpad allows switching directions faster. Analogue for driving and therpy gamess

knokelmaat, do gaming w What is your favourite game console?

Portable: my black Gameboy Advance SP, playing my original Gameboy games on it (Donkey Kong Country and pokemon Blue)

TV: this is gonna sound weird, but I absolutely love my PS5, it’s just so sleek and I love the controller haptics and finally having most games running at 60 fps. Again I mostly play older games on it, but a lot of them got PS5 updates like Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Spider Man, Days Gone…

It was the NDS (and 3DS), Now It’s the switch (hopefully a successor is on the way…)

I like all consoles in general and have had most modern ones up til Xbox One S and PS4.

Only own a PC and Switch now.

I like the portable form factor, I don’t feel the need for a Deck as I can play everything I want on my current devices.

NDS is definitely first, but Steam Deck is close. These days I’m probably more on my Steam Deck tho.
