At one point recently I bought a two pack of USB Blu-ray burner drives for $25. Optical media is so dirt cheap now that the readers are BOGO. Gave one to my partner, the other is still serving my physical media needs very well.
Mostly Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Feels like this game took half a step forward and two steps back, compared to the first part. It tries to do a lot of things and doesn’t do many well. There’s minigames-ish for so many things. The open-world stuff kinda tries to be Assassin’s Creed lite, but all zones are huge, but pretty empty, with the same two types of “events” in them (go somewhere or fight). Of course, the game has a shitty crafting system, so you can pick up material in the empty zones. Combat is a bit better than before, but then the devs managed to craft the perfect enemies to make some fights feel like hell, even worse than the worst fights in Remake, and I’m not even done with the game yet. I’ve played the game for 40 hours, but the story has barely moved. I think there’s supposed to be an alternate timeline, but I think I’ve seen like five minutes of it. It’s been pretty disappointing so far, but I still like the characters, so I’ll continue playing.
Then a bit Baldur’s Gate 3. Started another Honor Mode run, going with pretty much the same party build as my first run, where I almost made it. The full fighter playthrough has to wait for the next Patch.
Songs of Conquest is a spiritual successor you might be interested in checking out. I agree HoMM3 is still great to revisit and SoC doesn’t quite scratch the exact same itch but it’s a good way to get more of the same but with some variety keeping it fresh
Those were awesome as well. I just remembered the necropolis faction as well, I think it was in 3 that you could get insane numbers of skeletons / skeleton archers. Probably 5 as well.
To be honest, it’s still a little hectic for me, but I feel the most notable change is that you can avoid being countered / masterstriked. By positioning your weapon, you can block, perfect block (allows you to strike back) or masterstrike which remains unblockable. There is now an interesting back and forth between blocking, striking back and being blocked, which can go on forever - until someone has no stamina left or someone pulls off a masterstrike.
Interesting! Is it still hard as heck in 1v2? The first game lock your target in combat by default and it’s hard to see, react, or shift between enemies, the game simply not allow me to do so reliably that i keep dying very early into the game. I remember i have to mod it to make it so it’s easier to do so.
Yes, you don’t want to fight against more than one enemy, the game even has a tutorial with a stylistic drawing of you lining up the enemies in a line, so that only one can engage you at any time. I managed to pull this off with two enemies, with three you would need to tank some hits.
It’s fun to watch the Nazis lose territory, until they aren’t and suddenly America and Russia are both Fasc and I’m just crying trying to keep my people happy enough to be willing to go to war
The Surge is way better than a sci-fi souls-like attempt that so many reviews seem to argue it is. And Shammy’s review of it really does it better justice than most reviews imo. The limb-targeting system makes it really engaging, and the sequel’s directional parry system adds the depth that Dark Souls and Elden Ring are missing. I highly recommend it for anyone tired of replaying Souls games
Extremely easy question: Sonic The Hedgehog (AKA Sonic '06). Such a buggy mess, but I absolutely loved playing it on 360 and definitely wanna play it again some day.
I own Forza 5 on the Xbox, and GT7 on my PS5. Historically, I’ve preferred the Xbox over the Playstation, but my experience on GT7 with VR on the PS5 basically killed Forza 5 and the Xbox for me.
So if Forza 5 comes to PS5 with VR support, for me, this will be good news. But if it doesn’t come with VR support, I won’t bother.
And I guess, ultimately, it’s bad news either way, because I probably won’t be going back to the Xbox whatever they do.
Microsoft said in the past (around launch of Xbox Series) that they are not interested into VR. And given that the VR2 headset didn’t sell too much on the PS5, I don’t think that Microsoft goes the extra mile to implement this feature to a game that is not even build around it. Not saying it won’t happen, but its unlikely. Hope I am wrong though, for people who enjoy VR. Maybe this could be used as a “training vehicle” to port to VR, then port it to other VR platforms as well on PC.
I personally wait until Valve makes a VR headset for cheap price that can be used without cables, something like the Meta Quest but for the Steam eco system and by my trusted Valve.
For the most part, VR is a toy at this point. Interesting, but not compelling. The single exception I would say though, where it is genuinely transformational to gameplay rather than just gimmicky, is car/racing simulators and games. Most things, I can take or leave VR. But I can never play a racing sim again if it doesn’t have VR. But, even if it doesn’t come to Forza, it’s no big loss, as there are plenty of VR enabled alternatives out there (though mostly on PC to be fair)
I enjoyed my time with Redfall. The gunplay wasn’t anything special, but the atmosphere was great. I loved the setting and soundtrack. I thought the art style was cool, and I liked the little bits of lore you could pick up.
The final update brought some big QoL changes to the game. I just look at present day Fallout 76, which launched in an even worse state and wonder what could have became of Redfall if Microsoft hadn’t fired everyone.
