Many of the old Sierra and Dynamix adventure games are great. Kings Quest IV through VII are probably the ones that hold up best. The adventures of Willy Beamish, Heart of China, Police Quest and Space Quest.

Quake 3.

Pure, unbridled, FPS action.

I am not sure if tfc (team fortress classic) still has servers running in any capacity, but it was one of the forefathers of role based, team shooters. It’s influence and by proxy TF2’s is still huge in competitive gaming.

Those games defined my late teens and early 20’s.

Half life, if you really can’t get into it check out black mesa but please try the original first it is amazing and was truly ground breaking. Then play the portal games because they expand on eachother.

immutable, do gaming w Need help with pico-8

Pico8 carts are just a special flavor of png. I would try running it directly or if it won’t run them with the png extension just rename the file from .png -> .p8 without converting and see if that works

Relevant section of the user manual

There are three ways to share carts made in PICO-8:

  1. Share the .p8 or .p8.png file directly with other PICO-8 users

Type FOLDER to open the current folder in your host operating system.

Although if you are having trouble you might have more luck getting started with the built in SPLORE command

Relevant section of the user manual

This might be easier to get started with since it will all get wired up automatically for you

sleepybisexual,

I’ll try renaming. Thing is I play carts outside of pico8 and don’t have a copy. A machine I got has a pico emu so I got some carts. It just cannot read the raw ong and instead sees it as boxart.

Ill try renaming

Count042,

Fake-08 is explicitly supports p8.PNG files: github.com/jtothebell/fake-08

However, not all games are compatible with fake-08.

passepartout, do gaming w I uninstalled RDR2 out of frustation after 100+ hours
@passepartout@feddit.org avatar

I have left about 70 hours of time in this game for playing the story one time and most of the side quests. It would be even more if they fixed the frickin vram memory leak causing the game to crash after one or two fast travels, but it’s unplayable for me this way. Search for “rdr2 FFFFFFF” if you’re looking for another reason not to buy this game.

Gleddified,

Oh that’s what that is. I just assumed it was Linux things happening. lol

along_the_road,

The issue was fixed for me in that update they did earlier this year. Also the horse stable glitch was fixed after many many years.

@passepartout@feddit.org avatar

Huh, gotta try it again some time then.

averyminya,

I did replay the game recently and it was still the least of my issues, just a glaring example of one that is symptomatic of a wider issue in the games design

kureta,

So, what you are saying is that the horse stable is stable now.

I recently got this game, and wow, what a time sucker. FINALLY won my first run yesterday. I’ve played a fair share of rogue likes, but this one really does feel fresh every game.

Played it for some hours, but I don’t get the hype tbh. Maybe I’m missing something

Tagger,

Hey, maybe it’s just not for you. that’s okay.

Ageroth,

It’s really just poker solitaire with a bunch of math added to flavorful bonus cards, if you’re not really into poker, solitaire, or math it isn’t going to be the right game for you.

I have a buddy that hates RNG, mostly plays shooter games, he hates poker in all its forms because of the randomness but I feel like learning to deal with probably and chance are really good lessons that apply to broader life.

yt-dlp is generally the best open source tool for downloading/backing up videos from the internet. Despite the name, it works with thousands of video streaming sites, not just youtube. Completely free. I would never pay for a video downloading software.

It is command line based though. I’m sure there are forks with a UI, but I’m not familiar with them. There is a fairly detailed wiki for it, and a discord support channel. The defaults are fine for youtube back ups.

I would reccomend uploading whatever you back up to the Internet Archive. Then you aren’t responsible for hosting, and it’s available to the public.

I’ll take a look at that program, only thing I’m digging about the 4k Downloader is it channeling my inner Ron-Co spokesman and being able to set it and forget it for full playlists. Command line isn’t a big deal though, I grew up having to play games in MS-DOS. Thanks for the lead though I’ll check it out tonight.

ByteOnBikes, do games w Where do you find new games nowadays? (Both singleplayer + multiplayer)

I think I’m on the cutting edge of game releases, mostly focused on indie games. I have a huge Steam collection. This is also my nerd hobby.

Im subscribed to a bunch of game sales (like isthereanydeal) and casually browse steam pages every few days. I often play a genre then search for “games like X”. Lately it was metroidvania games. I found a game called Rabi-Ribi, which looks really uncomfortable to play. But the reviewers said to skip the dialog and ignore the loli, because it has really strong game mechanics. (And it does!)

Searching for indie games using steamdb with under 5000 reviews (lately I’ve been searching for games under 500 reviews), and checking them out.

I also make indie games as a hobby (nothing fancy!), so I like to look for inspiration from other indie game developers.

Lastly, Rock Paper Shotgun or Giant Bomb covers any big budget games I should know about.

Nowadays? If you want to get a game in my face, it has to be via word of mouth or be blown in by the winds of Steam.

I took a look through my game library and these are the broad categories of how a game ended up there.

  • Friends (though I tend to be the recommender for my friends)
    • Path of Exile, Cobalt Core
  • I liked the demo at Steam Next Fest
    • Moonlight Pulse, Laika: Aged Through Blood, Cassette Beasts
  • Announcement through a game I already like
    • Jackbox series, Slayers X, Vertigo 2
  • YouTube channels
    • Game Maker’s Toolkit: Neon White, Toodee and Topdee, Assault Android Cactus
    • From other channels, but I don’t remember which: Gunfire Reborn, A Short Hike, Bug Fables
  • Sheer luck
    • I found Corn Kidz 64 from a tile at the bottom of a Steam store page, before it was released
    • I found Hypnospace Outlaw from Steam’s discovery queue…
    • …and following through the music credits got me to Queenjazz’s Bandcamp site, where I found an OST for a different game, Grapple Dog!
Ashtear, do games w Where do you find new games nowadays? (Both singleplayer + multiplayer)

The bulk of my finds come from chat either on Lemmy communities (!jrpg, !patientgamers, or this one) or a couple Discord servers I’m on. Sometimes a game will catch my eye unexpectedly while I’m on OpenCritic looking up something else, too.

Otherwise it’s generally gaming news. I get that from also Lemmy/Discord, my RSS feed, or showcases. I always end up wishlisting half a dozen games during the summer showcases. My RSS feed right now is DualShockers, Eurogamer, Gematsu, PCGamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, Siliconera, and Denfaminicogamer (Japanese site). Always open to more suggestions for the feed; the problem is not everyone does RSS these days.

Honestly I just watch streamers like Cohhcarnage or Lirik as they pretty much only play new and indie games and they tend to give honest opinions on what they play. Literally just bought an indie game today after watching Lirik play it.
