As a Forza Horizon fan my curiosity is piqued. I like being able to shift vibes from an intense race to just cruising around the landscape, and Mario Kart is a very different style of racing so it’d be a very different experience

KubrickFR, do games w What open-world games on Steam have satisfying movement, like Arkham Knight or Spider-Man?

The first ones that come to mind are : Prototype Infamous Hulk

If you like the flow but it can work without gliding/grapple games with parkour can be up your alley like mirrors edge (catalyst is open world) or dead something (rising, island?)

I recently loved Tinykin for the same movement is fun reason, not really open world but 6-7 big worlds. Ni gliding but lots of movement flow. Another not open world (and not third person) is Titanfall 2, loads of wallrun/jump.

Bob_Robertson_IX, do games w What open-world games on Steam have satisfying movement, like Arkham Knight or Spider-Man?

Steep (snowboarding, skiing, paragliding, wingsuiting) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (fast travel is an option, but come on, enjoy that ride!) are the two that I really enjoy.

B0NK3RS,
@B0NK3RS@lemmy.world avatar

Great choice with Steep. Very underrated still

ka1ikasan,

Loved Steep and have tons of hours on it. However, my issue with it is that it is a purchase for a single playthrough: there’s no way to start over. I didn’t play in years, mostly forgot how to play and would like to have a few tutorials, rediscover the open world again, etc.

@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

maybe not quite what you’re looking for but the shadow of mordor series has a liiiitle bit of that. obviously not as city-focused as arkham or spider-man.

TwoBeeSan,

Your character becomes a double jumping revenge ghost sprinting through the environment pretty early in the second one.

Good suggestion.

FilthyHands, do games w What open-world games on Steam have satisfying movement, like Arkham Knight or Spider-Man?

Echo Point Nova. Super fast and fun. Hoverboard, Wallrides, grapple, etc are all here.

Apeman42,
@Apeman42@lemmy.world avatar

Ooh, I wasn’t thinking of first-person games, but that does look pretty gnarly.

FilthyHands,

The game makes you feel like a badass.

CarnivorousCouch,

I came here to recommend this, too. This game lets you really hit a nice vibe with the movement. Has co-op, too!

I’m not big on the idea of open world racing. To me, driving between race tracks looks like a chore.

I’ve seen other racers do it, but I’ve never really delved into a game like that. Maybe once I do I’ll really like it.

I do think grinding rails and wall jumping around looks pretty fun in MK. But it could end up gimmicky and unexiciting once you’re used to.

Basically all a big ‘wait and see’ from my perspective.

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

Driving to tracks is 100% a chore. It’s made me not enjoy any new racing game in the last 5 years. I really hope this game has an option to skip that and jump right into a race. I don’t look forward to wrangling my family to drive to the same track just to start a race. I’m sure at least one of my kids would drive in the opposite direction because they think it’s funny.

MorningThunder,

Agree 100%. From the trailer, at least, it looks like there’s a separate “Free Roam” mode, and it will otherwise be normal Mario Kart. Also looks like they’ll maybe have races that will span multiple tracks, which I can see being cool.

ampersandrew, do games w What open-world games on Steam have satisfying movement, like Arkham Knight or Spider-Man?

I haven’t played the PC version, but I expect it’s the same as the console version: Prototype (from Activision in 2009; there’s another game listed with the same title). The story is utter garbage, but everything about the moment to moment gameplay is great, and it definitely checks the boxes you’re looking for. I never played the sequel, because it re-used the same map, and that’s a lot like playing a Mario game with all of the same levels as the one before it, but this first game rules.

If you have access to something that can play Xbox 360 games, I’d also highly recommend the first Crackdown.

Apeman42,
@Apeman42@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that one, but I never got around to trying it. Sort of a grimdark/knockoff Venom version of Infamous, yeah?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I believe it has a direct lineage from a game based on The Hulk called Ultimate Destruction, and you can feel that. You’re super jumping, gliding, and sort of like Venom, consuming people to pose as them. There are missions with a stealth element, but other times you’re throwing tanks at helicopters. Holding the run button will have you effortlessly doing cartwheels off the tops of cars and wall running straight up skyscrapers.

Apeman42,
@Apeman42@lemmy.world avatar

Oh damn, it’s descended from Hulk UD? I loved that game, definitely one that was on my mind for this type of game. I’ll certainly be checking this one out then.

The Saboteur is on steam, too. I also just bought Sniper Elite 2-4 on the last sale.

i'm pretty excited. i was disappointed by 8 and disapointed even more when we got it again on Switch instead of a new installment, with . one of the main things that bugged me was the kart customization that felt more like picking nerfs than buffs. having that eliminated alone makes the game 10x more appealing, and then this new rally mode seals the deal for me

...aside from the price like everyone else is saying. i'll gladly get it used, but if we all wait for it to go on sale used, there won't be any used copies to buy used! the comments in the gameplay streams nintendo did today where flooded with demands to drop the prices so i think everyone is on the same page. it'll be interesting to see in the coming months if nintendo budges

Kelly,

As a bundled launch title I expect most launch window sales will be digital. There won’t be 2nd hand game cards on the market in any volume until after they drop the bundle.

samus12345,

Creature Commandos. I love GI Robot!

SynopsisTantilize,

Oh neat!! I’ll check this out

Nythos,

Definitely getting added to my list of things to watch.

FurtiveFugitive, do games w Thoughts on Mario Kart World

I think it looked great. More variety, bigger races, a world to play around in, etc those are all winning ideas from where I’m sitting. Adding something like wall jumps fits in the Mario universe and could add some interesting skips on courses and things. I was very excited after that trailer.

Of course now that pricing has been revealed, all of that excitement has been sucked out of the room for me. I’ve got a Steam Deck in the mail right now and that’s probably going to be it for me this next gen. Metroid 4 for the OG Switch might be my last Nintendo purchase

RedStrider, do games w Thoughts on Mario Kart World
@RedStrider@lemmy.world avatar

Looks pretty different from any game we’ve seen yet. I guess they made it that way since mk8 is already compatible with the new console, so it needs to be something other than “yet another Mario Kart” to not be overshadowed by 8.

Maybe I’ll pick it up in a couple years, but there’s still more than enough games I haven’t played on the Switch 1 for the steep price of the Switch 2 to be justified for me personally.

rylock, do games w Thoughts on Mario Kart World

I don’t see the appeal beyond for children.

Nintendo reminds me of Disney more and more, pulling out the same old tired franchises for increasingly cynical cash grabs that prey on people’s nostalgia.

icecreamtaco, (edited )
@icecreamtaco@lemmy.world avatar

“for all ages” and “for kids” are two different things. They don’t make kids games except for some of the yoshi platformers and even those are still playable

duchess, do games w South of Midnight | Review Thread

https://www.eurogamer.net/south-of-midnight-review

Not that South of Midnight is a disappointing game - far from it - but that it’s such a shame for it to get so close to being something so genuinely special. This is a game of just remarkable craft - we’ve not even mentioned the stop-motion style of animation! It’s lovely - and likewise remarkable attention, thought, and care. If only just a little more of that care had been afforded to the playing of it.

ModernRisk, do games w Thoughts on Mario Kart World

Seemed fun but I noped out of everything the moment, I heard the prices.

Steam Deck OLED + Emulations is the way to go.
