WolfLink, do games w Deadlocked is one of the funnest games I've played in a while

I enjoyed Overwatch. League of Legends always feels awful to play. Deadlock feels way more like League of Legends than Overwatch to me.

You should check out The Finals if you're looking for something that's a bit more OW-like. Heavy focus on objectives instead of kills, like OW. There's also lots of abilities and weapons to mix and match, so it's less of a hero shooter and more of a build-your-own-hero shooter. Made by a bunch of ex-DICE devs, so the gunplay and environment destruction are very satisfying. Completely free to play, too.

Buttflapper,

Have you played OverWatch recently? That game is a disaster. So damn boring and monetized to hell. They barely put any effort into it anymore. I’m pretty sure they have abandoned it or are about to because they realize that the community is done with them. At least with League, they have a lot of buy-in with the community and very loyal community that generally approves of what they’re doing

WolfLink,

By “Overwatch” I meant the original Overwatch. I stopped playing shortly before Overwatch 2 came out and I never played Overwatch 2.

Buttflapper,

Ohh fair point. I should have done that too honestly. I bought the first one. I should have stopped after they ended it

I wish they would stop releasing updates and DLC for Stellaris, so the modders have a version they can tinker with.

Buttflapper,

I love Stellaris, so can relate :'(

MasterBuilder, do games w I'm tired of every game being live service

I left the pc gaming scene about 20 years ago and only came bacj this year. I found my steam credentials from when they were initially seeking players and revived my account (I closed my email on the account back in 2009, so i couldn’t recover).

I’ve mostly been playing vSkyrim, BG 3, and a few emulated Zelda games. I finally ordered a new gaming laptop because Cyberpunk 2077 is hard to rrad on the Deck, even on a 50" tv on hi-res.

All that is just so you all know where I’m coming from, i am both a newb and a veteran!

From a business standpoint, looking ant it form the non-gaming financial point of view, the move to online-only makes very compelling sense.

It fully implements the licensing model, gives them total control over the property, enables them to generate reports that accurately identify trndsvin user populations, pinpoint steady revenue figures, and they can kill the game as soon as it isn’t valuable to them anymore, and they don’t have to worry about losing revenue from sharing, passing the copy to an otherwise paying customer for free, or a significant pirtiin of piracy loss.

Itvis the end state of the “we are mearly licensing it to you until such time as we decide ee want it back” model.

It sucks, and if i can know it is online only before buying, i will pass. All of us should. Revenue is king to them, and if they lose even a little, they will try something else.

Planned obsolescence hidden behind a “feature”.

In ten years, when they want to pull the plug on this game, they will cite dwindling users and “exorbitant” per-user maintenance costs.

They don’t want playable legacies. They want something they can leverage for nostalgia marketing in 20 years, and if you break out the original game, they won’t make any money. Production companies want you to buy what they are offering today, because it pays for new yachts.

Buttflapper,

TemTem has been accused of exactly this. It’s nonsensical how they won’t allow people who bought the game to play offline. Here’s an example from 7 months ago on reddit where someone said: “they’ve literally said that they will keep TemTem playable one way or another, including if they need to make an offline mode”. The game has under 1k players now according to Steamcharts, about 700 today. It launched with 27k players. It’s virtually unplayable since it’s designed as an MMO fully online, but has barely anyone playing it. But they STILL refuse to develop an offline mode.

dustyData,

In ten years? If I had to guess the average life span of live services games I’d say about 18 months. Heavily skewed by the survivors. The shortest lived one only worked for 13 days. Only the very popular ones survive past 5 years and there are a handful of 10 plus. I know it’s hard to believe, the average gamer is oblivious to how over saturated the videogames market is. Despite executive’s delusions, time and money are actually finite. Not all games can demand all of it, at the same time.

I haven’t played a live service game since Destiny 2 decided to completely remove all the shit I paid for, then lock everything new behind even more pay walls.

I’ve been playing dozens of games since then. It’s not hard to find games that aren’t live service and likely won’t be touched outside of stability and a couple QoL things here and there.

I’m all for laws requiring all games to be playable offline, and without any sort of bullshit “online activation”. I paid for a game, I want to play the game without having to download shit first. I want to play the game whether my hanky-ass internet connection is stable or even nonexistent today. I want to be able to use the thing I paid for without having to jump through extra hoops, no matter how large or “on the ground” the hoop is. It’s still a hoop.

There are dozens of other very good games for every one live service. Find some you like and play them.

Is this kind of horny-posting really necessary?

There are countless NSFW/barely NSFW communities out there, including a metric ton of anime pic communities. This has nothing to do with c/games.

At least tag it appropriately.

Fades,

How does this not belong in this sub? It’s not like it’s explicitly SFW, and OP is doing as they said in the title. These are screenshots from a game, clearly the game has mechanics that are being demoed here.

How does screenshots from a game have no place in c/ games? I’ve just checked the rules and yes it could have an NSFW tag even though no nudity is shown but that is a far cry from “has no place”

Lastly, wtf do anime pics have to do with this? This is game footage.

Screenshots of a game have a place in this community when they are used to actually discussing the game. Which is the point a lot of these “daily screenshot” posts are missing. There is no discussion here because OP didn’t bother discussing anything, it’s just a random collection of pics. Unless you count “showing that the game has a player-controlled camera” as “demoing game mechanics”.

I would 100% consider this a low-effort post, which is against the rules of c/games.

beepnoise, do gaming w Silent Hill 2 (2024) Review Thread

I'm just downloading it to my Steam Deck as I bought advanced access to the game. I'll let folks know how it goes.

And before anyone jumps on my neck about buying advanced access:

  • I waited until review scores came out
  • Even then I was originally planning to wait a few weeks until launch but with Steam refunds, I figured I can play for half an hour to get a good feel of the game
  • Not only is this Konami's first good game in ages, I dare say this is also the industry's first good game in ages. RE4 was excellent, but the OG was great and Capcom at that point knew how to do well. I cannot say the same for Konami/Bloober.
  • I'm someone who is lucky enough to have enough disposable income where a purchase like this doesn't really negatively affect me financially.
beepnoise,

Nevermind, I did a quick check on YouTube and the game runs absolutely terribly on the Steam Deck... so much for me supporting Konami, got that refund request in order.

Want to throw me an invite? I really want to try it, but none of my friends are on it. I stopped playing OW when they jumped the shark and announced OW2. You can only play if you know someone who is playing, right?

Hoimo,

Yeah, it’s still invite-only afaik, but there’s no limit on the number of people you can invite, so I found someone in a public discord server who accepted all friend requests and sent out bulk invites. (For anyone else still looking.) I’ll send you a PM with my friend code and get you an invite.

I also had a bonus screenshot of Cauldron Lake lined up to share, but for whatever reason while retyping the post from when i accidentally posted it in the wrong community, it butchered the formatting (That’s also the reason the writing is kind of stilted). Here’s the bonus screenshot of the water

I didn’t really get the point of Goat Simulator. But the other games easily hooked me for 50 to 100+ hours. And they are all excellent coop games.

It wasn’t for me, either, but I’m fairly certain the point of Goat Simulator is that there isn’t one.

the point of goat simulator was that it was a three-week goof project the Sanctum devs had fun with to celebrate good sales before they got to work on the sequel.

then it funded the development of Satisfactory.

Kissaki,

I loved Goat Simulator for its absurdity and silliness. It had a lot of content and stuff to explore as well, embedding cultural references and humor.

theangriestbird, (edited ) do gaming w Silent Hill 2 (2024) Review Thread

how tf there only 2 comments in this thread? Y’all this is SILENT HILL TWO and it’s scoring WELL I guess my reason is horror games aren’t really my cup of tea. but this is a BIG DEAL!

Edit: here’s a key passage from the Eurogamer review that is hype:

The original game was both combat-light and a little short, and Bloober has addressed both these issues head-on. For the latter, the remake has opened up a slew of new landmarks for us to explore, so I devoted a lot of time picking through the streets of Silent Hill, revelling in the new-found freedom of being able to visit shops and buildings that had hitherto been out of bounds for us. This, coupled with longer levels and more places to visit, more than doubles the original eight-ish hour run-time.

As for combat? Well, be careful what you wish for, I guess. Silent Hill 2 was outrageously easy, even on its hardest difficulty, and Bloober’s edition is not. The good news is Remake doesn’t exactly make combat central to the experience (at least, not on standard difficulty). But it sure does make it harder to adopt the typical survival horror strat of run-away-run-away-run-away. Because of its claustrophobic tight spaces and nooks and crannies, it’s incredibly difficult to retreat from a fight, and there is essentially no meaningful way to stealth around the place, either. On top of that, most boss battles - they are all here, as well as a surprise or two - will deplete your ammo reserves with ruthless efficiency. It’s also often tough to finish off foes without taking damage yourself as a result, burning through your ever-dwindling medical supplies. (Yes, Lying Figures spewing toxic vomit in your death throes - I’m looking at you.)

They took a legendary game and made it better. Props to Bloober team, guess they still got it.

chloyster,

You get whats up!!! Unbelievably stoked for this

I don’t feel the need for a remake when it comes to SH2.

It still has some kinks that need ironing out, and it could for sure use a bigger roster, but they’re cooking with this one. The MOBA core and superb movement mechanics just complement each other so nicely, and with both powerful easy to use active items and ability-based heroes available it’s possible to perform even if you’re not an aim god.
