This could very much represent troubles not just in video game development, but project development in an investor-driven market entirely.
Everyone is focused on short-term wins and profits - so they can demonstrate they’re a fantastic manager making incredible things. They hire 1000 people, then show the grandiose things they made with those people in 2 years so they can take more investment. But the way creative work goes, there are far better ways to play that lottery - they just don’t involve as much active management, and are far less showy.
As a publisher, you could just start 50 small studios of only 10 employees each, with occasional external support as needed to each one, and give all of them 5 years to develop. That would equate to the same or much lesser cost as some of these gigantic multi-outsourced projects, but it means investments are left for longer. And of course, few of them would be a “Hollow Knight” or “Minecraft”, but just enough of them would likely succeed to pay for all the others.
You can see similar concerns in R&D and other similar fields across industries, that give randomized and unpredictable benefit when every manager is watching every quarter’s earnings.
And of course, few of them would be a “Hollow Knight” or “Minecraft”, but just enough of them would likely succeed to pay for all the others.
I would contest this. The vast majority of indie games ‘fail,’ and there is some Machiavellian logic to “let’s make a mediocre game we know will sell.”
Basically zero “micro team” indies turn into Rimworld or Hollow Knight or Stardew Valley, statistically, much less Minecraft. That’s a fantasy.
…That being said, I think there is a “sweet spot” dev team size where diminishing returns are quickly hit. Coffee Stain (the Satisfactory dev) is my classic sweet spot example: Big enough to license Unreal Engine and pretty dependably make something “big” and fantastic, without burning cash detailing pores in ass cheeks and making some broken custom engine to fulfill some suit’s “1st party synergy” fantasy.
They have marketers and such, but it’s frugally spent.
And publishers are pursuing this strategy. Paradox seems to be on a spending spree for mid sized studios, and Embracer Group is notorious for it.
TotK is a great game. And I’ve heard Baldur’s Gate 3 was excellent although can’t play it until I’ve got myself a new computer. I think they’d probably count?
Every single game Larian made would come out on steam in early access, and always with an early access price. When BG3 hit early access with a released game price I was pissed. But then I found out that they were making a game with Wizards of the Coast those greedy fuckers so the price made sense. Still waited almost a year after it was released to buy it, because the released game price was higher than every other fully released Larian game. Fuck WotC and Fuck Hasbro.
As a plot and gameplay device i love when games with party mechanics remove the Main Protagonist from the party for a bit and have you control someone else.
Same! These moments always feel special. I also really love how Wall Market is depicted in this chapter.
Man, I am jealous of how much you get to play, lol. I am literally at the last hour of this game from when it first released, but I haven’t been able to finish it since… same goes for everything I play. I recently saw you going through the last of us 2, and it’s the same for that, but im only about halfway. List goes on and on and I haven’t picked up anything really in the last year that’s not a free monthly game.
I think your post is going to motivate me. Im going to try and beat it this week and break my awful no finish streak.
Doing these screenshots definitely has helped to give me a clear goal when completing games. Before i used to bounce around my backlog and not finish anything. Hell, i still do it from time to time lol
Now for the bad news, you are easily at the best part of an otherwise pretty mid game that fails in many ways that you wouldn’t expect from such an expensive title. This game is just troubled in so many ways that I couldn’t even really feel comfortable giving it a 7 out of 10 as it maybe deserves a 6.5 at best.
I don’t think about that stuff. If it’s a game or movie involving killing I suspend my disbelief. It’s only annoying when they suddenly do care about it.
Arcadium 3: Space Odyssey - I’ve been playing the phone version. It’s a horde fighting survival game set in space - you pilot a spaceship to harvest planets, buy items, and fight aliens to level up, unlock missions and ships, and acquire artifacts to help you survive better. The developer has 2 other space themed arcade games.
The same person is currently working on rebalancing Halo 2 as well. I don’t follow it closely enough to have any clue when it’ll be done, but I’m excited to try it when it finally is. H2 had loads of problems when being developed, and I’d love to see the game properly balanced and with extra content.
I’ve been watching Ruby’s last few livestreams, it’s amazing what he’s doing. The changes are much more in depth than what he did with CE : jackal shields, fighting marines when playing as the arbiter, revamped fight against the prophet of regret… he was working on the quarantine zone recently, which makes him over two thirds of the way through.
Is he doing anything about the swarms of Jackal snipers in Halo 2?i loved Halo 2, but you can tell Bungie got lazy in the campaign by just putting a bunch of snipers on god mode.
I’m pretty sure he did, but not sure where he talks about it. You should try watching his older livestreams on the early levels, or his recent “overhauling the covenant” video.
In videos he has mentioned both reducing the damage from the sniper rifles so they aren’t one-hit kills, and allowing jackels to use carbines which will replace some sniper jackels.
I ended up going to google it for the original and found out it was a common enemy. It just so outlandish i wanted to know what the original context was. It is interesting to know it was always kind of out of place though
Lol I feel like they added it simply because of all the people saying that of all Midgar enemies, there’s no way it’d fit in. Tbf, they truly jumped the shark with this one out of spite for what they could or should do in their game.
I really struggle to remember weaknesses and tips. I just figured out at least that I don’t need to cast Assess every time, I can just hit select which makes things far easier
