I would argue that if you’re an Xbox gamer with no interest in PC and no interest in trying different eco-systems then yes the new ROG Xbox Ally will be your best bet. You might not get quite the same performance as the SteamOS models but you’ll have access to your GamePass, cross-buy library titles if you have any and a familiar interface.
EDIT: Woof, after seeing the ROG Ally Xbox X, there’s no way could I recommend it.
You can absolutely play a Steam Deck on the couch. It’s effectively the same sort of device as a Switch, just without all the Nintendo nonsense of knowing that you’re supporting a company that specializes in squashing industry innovation through litigation.
You can even buy a dock that uses the USBC port as an HDMI output, if you want to play on a bigger screen, and connect your favorite Bluetooth controller.
To me if it’s a new release of a game…of course it should be shared! The first person to post it (preferably with their own views on the game coming written underneath) keeps the community up-to-date with what games look like. Trailer ‘dumping’ really only happens when there’s a big event, and the point of that event is seeing trailers for games. It makes sense to have them shared here.
But posts sharing the same trailer after that first? Removed.
I don’t think of it as ad spam, because it’s not like Rockstar is making a Lemmy account to make sure we see the GTA VI trailer. If we denied trailers being posted, there’d be some very angry Silksong people when that one got the trailer!
Should they be consolidated into one post then? It’s just bothersome to see a bunch of ads (because let’s be real, trailers are ad material) dumped in quick succession. The only ones I’d watch are for games I’m interested in playing, but for the ones I really want to play, I’d rather go in mostly blind so I won’t watch those either.
It’s not just one trailer, either, it’s announcement, release date, “now on steam”, cinematic trailer, gameplay trailer, release announcement trailer.
That’s indeed what we asked to do next time for big events. But when no such big event occurs, it’s OK.
In my opinion, the following trailers are acceptable :
Announcement of a new game -> so we can start talking about that game
Announcement of end of early access or of game release (like Hades 2 recently) -> So we can talk about the game at its release state
Major update of updates of a game (as soon as it isn’t too often) -> So we can discuss how that specific update make that game evolve, for better or worse. I’d honestly still prefer those one to be kept to their dedicated communities, but one from time to time won’t kill anyone.
Globally, that’s also a way to advertise dedicated communities for that specific game, so I think that’s alright.
We’ll discuss all of this with the incoming community rules update.
It honestly bugged me that people think there’s like a ceiling price for 2d even though it require artist to animate frame by frame, but 3d it’s unlimited even though you could tweak everything far more easily.
That’s capitalism for you: first you say that the price doesn’t depend on the production expenses and can be as big as the seller wants, and now you try to explain the price with “production expenses”. No. It is a 2d platformer. 20 bucks is already a very high price.
first you say that the price doesn’t depend on the production expenses and can be as big as the seller wants
Huh? When did i even claim that?
Edit: also even if i said that, which i didn’t, let’s not pretend selling a 2d metroidvania at $30 or even $40 is as same as AAA studio justifying selling their game at $80. It’s like a different issue altogether because one is actively firing people and exploit cheap worker and giving their CEO a fat bonus while claiming inflation, the other is people pretend a dimension of their artwork is the limiting factor.
My beliefs are that all software, with no exceptions should be free and non economic, set this aside for a bit:
I still see absolutely no reason for why one art style would have more value then any other art style.
A game can be anything we can conceive. The best games i played where not about the gameplay but the stories they tell, the vibes they set, the feelings they make me feel.
Thomas was alone and limbo are technically speaking not very complex but the value those games hold is infinitely more then a modern urbisoft title.
One is expensive produced soulless junk i wouldn’t even want to install ending with an abstract value of 0 to me, the others are experiences i cherish that i cannot buy for 20 bucks anywhere else therefor far exceeding the abstract value that 20 bucks is. Its worth way more, its factually sold for way less.
But i repeat, all software should be free, art and experiences should be shared freely and the people who make them deserve the means to flourish by getting acces to the many natural resources that are being wasted on capitalism.
Nintendo: Yes, you can shove that Mario in your socialistic arses; now give us those “the means to flourish by getting acces to the many natural resources”! All of them! Now!
Nitendo already has access because they have money and connections, if they would want to build something new, lets say a themepark or just a big event on public property there is not much stopping them, they can just do that with faster signed permission then you would receive a rejection email.
Nitendo also isnt indie game at all, just because they happen to make 2d platforms doesn’t mean they represent the default Businessmodel for all 2d platformers.
As a consequence of Nintendo already having more then a reasonable share, it also becomes morally correct to use their products and services without payment. The costs of All their games, hardware, regardless of 2d style should be 0 to consumers who almost all have less then they should have.
2D is not even less work than 3D imo if you’re comparing “good looking” 3D and 2D work. Modern techniques have all but rendered them as merely separate art styles.
Yeah, It really depend on how detail you want it to be, both is hard, but somehow people will pay one more than the other.
So the smart thing to do here is have a 2d metroidvania with 3d artstyle, and suddenly the price ceiling is removed lol (bloodstained is $40 on release)
A lot of 2d games are done in 3d engines these days anyway, because it gives “free” parallax, depth buffering and masking, hardware accelerated compositing etc.
So it’s all the work of hand-drawing animation frames with all the complexity of rigging and mapping in 3d.
Enter the Gungeon and the Shovel Knight series are two examples that come to mind.
There is a price for every D. You go to the store and buy a D for like 15 bucks, so reselling it for more than 20 is criminal. You get one D for free with a game engine, then you buy another D, that’s why the top price for two D is 20 bucks. You would think a game with 3 D will be capped at 40, but then you need to add some A to it, so it’s OK if a game with 3 D and 3 A costs 80 bucks at retail, A aren’t free.
It’s not about hours. It’s the cost of those hours. Despite tons of helpers, performant 3d is hard as fuck. And with that comes expensive coders. In extreme cases you’re talking about 3.5:1.
I don’t think anyone would have complained if it was $30-$40. They could have sold well at $60 with some people complaining about it and others defending them for the choice.
It takes a bit to get the swing of what’s happening in battles. It’s not real time and it’s not atb, the mix of the two is great.
I found myself really appreciating the updated content and perspective from the original, but you really don’t need to have played it before.
Every gamer who plays final fantasy knows the basics. Cloud and Arith good, Seperoth bad. But this one expands so much and includes a lot of the story from crisis core and other games in the series.
I get jealous of everyone replaying for the first time. But I’m still looking forward to hearing more about your journey.
I definitely prefer the mix over traditional ATB, and i’m starting to get the hang of it.
I haven’t played much FF before (Played half of the remake on PS4 and then had a brush with 14 with a friend). But with how famous 7 is, i definitely know the basics of the plot
Ooh, will be fun to see you work through these. The remake series is polarizing to be sure, but I quite like them despite their flaws. The combat system in particular to me feels like such a fun blend of action and ATB-gauge style inputs.
I do hope it eventuates, but…I’ve seen enough ‘credible’ leaks that its right around the corner to last me a lifetime
I hope it arrives for you, because RDR2 is a beautiful game, in its own slow way. Well worth replaying!
I’d love to replay, but I spent so many hours in it. Much like Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, I think I can’t actually play any more of it because I played so much already
I don’t recommend the upcoming Lenovo Legion Go 2. The Go 2 is around $1300, and only offers some 20% performance increase over the previous gen (with the Z1E CPU) which is currently $750. The ROG Xbox Ally X pricing is yet to be revealed.
The elephant in the room is the Steam Deck OLED, which you can find refurbished/certified for $440. It’s not as powerful, but power is never going to be a handheld’s strong suit anyway. They’re everywhere and tons of indie games are made with it in mind.
If you’re willing to get a bit nerdy, game streaming is getting pretty good these days, and is really easy on battery life. Moonlight lets you stream games from your desktop PC, while Xbox Remote Play can stream from your Xbox. If cloud gaming is your jam, Nvidia Geforce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming are available. For any of these, the Steam Deck would be perfectly adequate, but if you want something smaller and lighter, you could also go with an AYN Odin 2 Portal, which is an Android-based handheld with WiFi 7 and a nice 120Hz OLED screen for around $330.
Nintendo’s always been litigious and controlling of their brand. What they haven’t been (until recently) is price-gouging peddlers of derivative schlock resting on their laurels. They used to be afraid of low-quality games and rehashes diluting their brand (they witnessed the carnage of 1983). Now they just don’t care.
