It’d be really cool if developers would stop remaking old shit and instead, start creating new shit. But I get it- remaking old stuff is cheap and people eat it up. I mean, look at Hollywood. Same thing. And gaming is all about cash cows now.

dinckelman,

Once you turn what you love doing into a business, there’s no going back. There are still people deeply passionate about making games, but that’s just not the reality of these massive studios. They’re in for the money, and the leadership aren’t even… gamers themselves, somehow

Yokozuna,

Start playing more indie games with passion behind them and less AAA money grabbing half polished turds they keep pumping out. It’s the only way out of this mess.

dinckelman,

That’s basically all I do at this point, and it’s been really nice. A lot of genuinely fantastic experiences. Always labor of love, a game they’d love to play themselves

GoodEye8,

I personally don’t mind remakes as long as they’re well done. The thing is one the greater horror films of all time, it also happens to be a remake. The Departed is a great cops and robbers movie, it’s also a remake. Oceans eleven, Casino Royale, magnificent seven are all remakes. But people don’t remember the good example of remakes, only the bad ones.

And also in gaming. System Shock remake is great. Residential evil remake, great. Demons souls, great. There’s nothing wrong with getting good remakes, there are plenty of games that absolutely could have a remake. Like I would 100% want a New Vegas remake, one that does Vegas (freeside and strip) and Legion justice. After all the remake doesn’t need to be 1 to 1 with the original

When it comes to Max Payne I’m not sure how they could make it better than the original, but I’m not going to instantly write it off.

nobody said you have to buy it.

remedy’s last three games were all brand new IP

Pratai,

Nobody said I can’t have an opinion on it without buying it either.

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

you’re complaining about Remedy remaking one of their older and most famous games when their last three releases have all been new IP, so i feel your criticism is misplaced. this isn’t coming at the expense of anything “new”.

Pratai,

I’m also not complaining. I’m just using this one article to point out how the INDUSTRY as a whole has become very remake-happy.

Do you really think this bothers me?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

you literally asked for them not to do this

Pratai,

You can ask for something without complaining. You should probably try and learn that these aren’t the same thing.

Like, requesting that a restaurant doesn’t over-salt my steak isn’t complaining that their steaks are too salty. It’s just suggesting something.

echo64,

They literally have a brand new game coming out in a few weeks. You can do both.

Phegan,

I feel like there is no shortage of new things, especially from indie developers

I wonder if they'll bring James McCaffrey back since he and Remedy have been working together for almost every game Remedy's made (the only one I can think of that he wasn't in is Quantum Break). McCaffrey's voice is so iconic as Max imo, it's hard for me to imagine anyone else doing it.

0000000nowhere,

No way they’d ever replace him, especially after the way the way the community reacted when Rockstar tried doing it

Loved playing Max Payne so much.

dingleberry, do games w Remedy says its Max Payne remakes are ‘a big, big project’ | VGC

I loved Max’s look on 1 and 2. They made him a “generic game protagonist” in 3. Half of the fun was watching him grimace the whole game.

ours,

Blame Rockstar for 3.

May Payne was a really fun game but I don’t have high hopes for it today. It’s too much politically correct bullshit everywhere that kills the fun. That being said, Baldurs Gate 3 showed the way to fun again.

I think Max Payne 3 was really well done. I definitely wouldn’t mind if the previous titles were elevated to that quality or above.

Hopefully a lot of the bad ass mods that really made the first couple of games even cooler get ported for the remakes. And not just the tons of Matrix mods because the game came out around the same time the movie was new and extremely popular.

I’d love to see people who live off of scalping get literally scalped. Society wouldn’t be losing anyone of any value at that point.

MikeT, do games w Remedy says its Max Payne remakes are ‘a big, big project’ | VGC

Don’t know how to feel about this one.

I would prefer Remedy expand their own IP and encourage people into thinking about Alex Casey instead.

They don’t own Max Payne, Rockstar does. They should buy it back instead of reworking this.

SomethingBurger, do gaming w Scalpers swarm Van Gogh museum for Pikachu Promo Card

They should sell it online and never let it go out of print. It’s a playing card, it can’t be that expensive to print and store like a million of them.

Unrelated but the plushy is so cute, I want one.

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

They do at least make it available online. But I agree that the artificial scarcity is scummy.

If you don’t have plans to travel to Amsterdam any time soon, you will still have a chance to get in on the artsy action via the Pokémon Center online storefront.

A range of Pokémon x Van Gogh products, though not the entire collection, will go live on the Pokémon Center and be available for purchase while supplies last. This includes a number of art prints, figures, and more.

The Pikachu with Felt Hat promo card will be given out as a gift to users who purchase products from this collab collection—again, while supplies last. It is likely that you will only get one Pikachu promo per order as a way to send as many cards out to as many people as possible.

Here’s hoping the project isn’t scrapped, but I’m not convinced they’d scrub all mention of it over a music license.

Which is one of those lies where, even if it was true, that’s deeply horrifying and reveals things that should not be tolerated.

live service shooter

Don’t worry, even if this one is cancelled, all the other generic, bland and boring live service shooters still exist. You won’t be able to tell the difference.

shapesandstuff, do gaming w Cancelled Hyenas was ‘Sega’s biggest budget game ever’, it’s claimed | VGC

I tried an early playtest of it and it felt like a mobile port of some free to play pubg copy.

Janky, unfocused, confusing.

navi,
@navi@lemmy.tespia.org avatar

To be fair that’s what actually early playtest are for.

“Beta” and “early access” are so abused these day.

shapesandstuff,

Yeah but i dont think anything changed about my complaints as far as i could see

averyminya,

The game shut down after the play test. There was nothing they had the opportunity to change.

If you’re talking about systemic issues with the games design, that I will agree with. From my understanding it’s a 5 team of three PvP/E heisting game in space.

That means that there’s zero gravity sections, maps large enough to have heists, and, again, 5 teams of 3. It’s not so much that the game itself has any specific issue, the issue the game has was sheerly its scope and ambition. It seems like it could have had a lot of potential if it just weren’t so many systems being combined.

shapesandstuff,

The tests went on for quite a long time is what i mean, i kept getting emails even after i stopped.

Idk about the scope being so crazy, there are similar games executing such concepts well. It was simply the execution of the systems and overall game and level design. That and the terrible technical issues that really held back whatever they had managed this far.

BudgieMania, do gaming w Cancelled Hyenas was ‘Sega’s biggest budget game ever’, it’s claimed | VGC

If this is true... Oof...
Like, imagine losing your job because somebody decided to drop over 70 milion in something like this... I bet everybody affected would have predicted that this needed to be canned way earlier. Yet the people responsible for this unforced error will be largely unaffected because since business is accepted to be a gamble at times, I guess that means you get to make stupid mistakes that ruin hundreds of livelihoods for no reason and just go oops, my bad, we'll have to do a tactical restructuring I guess.
Seriously, the first trailer was unanimously received with "another one of these games?" reactions. There is no excuse for any dollar spent after that! Anybody could have told you it was a miss! Aaaarrrgh.

Also much less important but still frustrating, knowing that so many properties under SEGA have struggled to get a budget and support, while they were spending all of the money in a fire pit instead. Now that it's been cancelled, we can say ANYTHING would have been a better use of that money. Don't ever let SEGA tell you that anything would be a bad project ever again! Oh, SEGA, you still think a localized port to modern platforms of Valkyria Chronicles 3 would be a bad project? Well let me tell you, it sure as hell wouldn't have lost DOZENS OF MILLIONS.

And in that line, nothing hurts more for me personally than knowing all of the issues that the Total War franchise has had, with products that didn't get the development time they needed, additional content policies that went way overboard with pricing, very small degree of evolution and investment between entries... And the money that could have gone to that consistently performing franchise that has no true substitute competitors was instead going to... To burn it in a pit with funny colors and masks and dances and...

Man, I just cannot. Man.
