That’s fine for some folks, but i game with friends a lot. So far discord is the easiest for that. Been researching alternatives for a bit and might go back Mumble, though
Matrix seems like the one with most potential to develop into a 1:1 Discord alternative.
Then you have XMPP, Mattermost, RocketChat, whatever Revolt.chat renamed itself into, etc.
Matrix is a protocol with multiple options for front-end clients. If you don’t like Element, for example, you can try Cinny. They both use Matrix but are different apps.
I’m right there with you. I already hired a guy to make a WordPress plugin for it and also another guy to make an iPhone app. The former is done, the latter is nearly done. I’m adding a feature (as I am the product designer 😜) to do in-line images – IRC sorely needs that capability.
But yeah, both will be BSD, I think… Tho as I think this thru, I really don’t want to facilitate other end vitrification.🤔
Good riddance. I hate that so many communities moved from forums to using Discord. It’s such a ratty little pigeon hole for communications to go and get lost in forever. It’s a shitshow for anything other than instant, live messaging. And so many communities use it as their only real forum. The day that private equity and public investors liquidate the servers and sell off Discord’s IP after their future bankruptcy will be a very happy day.

Such an expensive gimmick, especially considering it’s primarily aimed for kids that can’t afford it.
For that price I would’ve expected it to have more features. Like maybe be able to use Amiibo figures to unlock more content. Or a ceiling projector to play Nintendo videos/animations or ambient lighting. Or if they’d go the extra mile, be able to project the Switch display.
I know, but it’s still such an expensive gift. I think many parents that buy gifts are more likely to spend that amount of money on multiple other gifts instead. And even for people with more money to spend it just seems a bit excessive. I know some people that would like this clock, but I (and others I know) would not pay like €100 for a gift clock with quite limited features lol
I feel like this thing could’ve easily be priced half, and it would still be kind of expensive. But at least a much bigger group of potential buyers would open up, and Nintendo would probably still make a huge profit out of it.
Well, €/$100 is about how much people are paying for some new games these days, to put it in context. If someone is a Nintendo fan or a collector it’s not necessarily a hard sell at that price given that they probably have disposable income.
