CodexArcanum, do gaming w I'm fine.

I remember being irritated about this in Falllout 3, but even more so that every person pre-war from the poorest child to the most exalted CEOs hoarded bottle caps and stuffed them into every ready container. Almost like they knew I’d need the cash decades later.

The Bethesda fallout games take place 200 years after the Great War.

CodexArcanum,

Honestly, I wrote 200 years initially then couldn’t remember if they were actually that dumb, second guessed myself, and hedged on “decades.”

But yes, realizing that many places in America would have been uninhabited wilderness 200 years before today, the idea that major metro areas would still be untouched ruins 200 years after the war is just ludicrous.

I just put all this stuff in the same “ignore it for the gameplay” box as torches still being lit in ancient tombs and backwoods merchants accepting 1000 year old gold coins as currency for buying beef jerky or magic shields or whatever.

When you Nintendo switch dies, and you don’t pay them monthly subscription to backup your games to the cloud.

Fuck you Nintendo. Never switching back from my Steam Deck.

DreamySweet,

If you don’t want to pay, you should at least be able to save onto a SD card which could be transferred to another Switch or backed up on a PC. Though it wasn’t perfect, Sony had that back on the PSP.

derpgon,

Sadly, that would mean save duplication would be possible - which is a huge no-go for the Switch for some godforsaken reason. Fuck Nintendo, sold my account, got the Deck, and now my data is backed up instantly, for “free” (price included in the 30% fee). Not like it’s more than a fre hundred KBs per game anyway.

DreamySweet,

You can play most games with Ryujinx or Yuzu anyway.

I love how the solution to all the issues most users have with the physical Switch are solved through emulation, and Nintendo, instead of simply giving people these features they want (which are entirely software dependent not hardware dependent) they wanna incorporate Denovu to try and stop the emulation scene.

I don’t know how that is cheaper or easier than just, you know… Letting saves be moved to the SD card and making a better, more navigable and curated store.

DreamySweet,

My biggest issue is that I can’t use it to play the games on my nice monitor at 4k with my GuliKit controller with hall-effect sticks that never have drift issues. I’ll still buy the physical games to support the devs if they’re good but I’m not buying another Switch.

derpgon,

Also forgot to mention, you know what died inside the switch? The chip that is responsible for encrypting the data, which also held the key, which means rest of the HW was okay, but the chip was unsalvagable (tried both official and unofficial channels).

Here’s the walk through for this boss fight.

The devil has possessed the holiest man in the world and turned the church into his hellish instrument on Earth. Now you must fight the terrible yet beautiful spiritual projection of Lucifer himself as it is spiritually attached to the pope’s puppeted withering husk of a body. Satan’s two dark cardinals infuse the pope with a demonic life force, artificially binding him to life while the pope weeps for the relief of death.

So what you’re gonna need to do is avoid Satan’s beams of hell fire and flaming brimstone he drops from above and target the cardinals. They’re warded by soul magicka, so that your spirit reaver blade cannot penetrate their shields. But you can use your voice of God attack to knock them back. Knock them into one of the 6 stations of holy water around the edge of the arena to burn their flesh and cause their wards to drop, then take them out with your spirit reaver blade.

Make sure to avoid the puppet pope’s special attacks. They will increase in frequency and severity with each cardinal’s death. Through the pope, Satan can still channel Heaven’s Light attacks at you which are devastating to your health and wipe out all built up soul magicka from attacking the cardinals which you’ll need for your half-demon spell attacks.

Once both cardinals’ souls are reaved, the puppet pope will become vulnerable. Satan’s projection will become protective of the pope’s body, shielding it with his spirit at all times. You must dodge all of his attacks until he uses his black energy beam special attack. Use the Shield of Faith spell to reflect this beam back at Lucifer. He will be forced back into the pope’s body to recover for 5 seconds. Run up and attack the puppet pope with your spirit reaver blade. Depending on your difficulty setting, you must repeat this process once, twice, or four more times.

After the final attack on the pope, a cutscene will begin. You dive your spirit reaver into the heart of the pope. He looks at you with an exhausted appreciation, an silently nods, and then his head jerks back as he screams in pain. His eyes and mouth shoot out red light and his scream grows deeper as his body burns away. A black cloud of particles bursts out of the body, splattering viscera everywhere. The cloud shoots straight for you and enters your mouth, nostrils and tear ducts.

The final showdown happens in your soul domain as you fight to keep Lucifer from taking possession of you next. This is an unwinnable fight. You must avoid his normal attacks and reflect 3 of his special attacks. After the third reflected special attack, lucifer will knock you back and pin you to the ground and begin to merge into your soup body. This is where you make your final moral decision of the game. Accept the possession or call upon the Indomitable Will of God.

If you allow Lucifer to possess you, you get the “bad” ending, which is non-canon. The game will end with your character becoming the avatar of Heaven and Hell, commanding demonic and angelic soul magicka and subjugating the world.

If you call upon God’s Will, you get the “good” canon ending. Lucifer is cast back to Hell by a beam of holy energy from above, and then you find yourself back in St. Peter’s Basilica with Arch Angel Gabriel standing before you. He thanks you for your service to the Lord, and grants you the Blessing of Yahweh which cleanses your body of your half-demonic nature. All the hellish energy leaves your body and you remain, a a wholly human man at peace.

But that peace is broken immediately when a flaming sword suddenly bursts through Gabriel’s chest. His body flares into holy light and then is gone. Standing there is Arch Angel Michael with an evil smile. He monologues that with Lucifer out the the picture and your demonic powers gone, he can finally cleanse the world of sin and all sinners and no one can stop him. You stand there shocked and unable to fight the angel, and the world is fucked. Fade to black. This ending sets up the plot in the sequel Hell Spawn 2: Heaven Sent.

TheOakTree,

You missed the part where Lucifer seems like an unbeatable boss and everybody accepts it as truth. Then, 6 years later some datamining led to a secret item that unlocks a third ending in which you overpower and absorb Lucifer’s soul. You wake up in the basilica, shunned and attacked by everyone there, and when you run out of health, you get back up in a cutscene as Lucifer-reincarnate and destroy both the heavens and the hells.

This secret ending becomes wildly popular and is seen as the most interesting ending in the game. However, it’s also never referenced again in the franchise.

flicker,

...I would play this franchise. My only disappointment is that I can't enjoy it as an emo teenager and make it my entire personality.

ThunderingJerboa, do gaming w Graphics can't save boring mechanics
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

I'm going to be put on a cross but I disagree. Its a balancing scale, one shouldn't ignore all other aspects because they favor one, its fine to prioritize one over the others but there shouldn't be a huge gap between them especially in the AAA field. Dwarf Fortress is a perfect example. It is one of the most mechanically deep games around and I think its wonderful at what it does but it is almost unplayable for most people until fairly recently because most people don't like Ascii. Hell even something like Aurora 4x is very mechanically deep but looks like a glorified spreadsheet, everyone has their breaking point and unfortunately for me Ascii is that out. I think many people throw away graphics since the AAA likes to glorify it too much but I think for a soulslike game, graphics need to be the 2nd most focused aspect because I consider animation quality a big part of graphic budget and I'm sorry a soulslike where there aren't good animations is a very bad soulslike. Predictability and reaction are a huge part of that subgenre.

Edit: Everyone has their own values on what they are looking for in a game and its specific subgenre, the recent debates about Cities skyline 2 shows this where people are some reason fine with a game like that being targeted for 30 fps. While sure its playable, I think we are in a modern era of gaming and 60 feels it should be the standard everyone shoots for.

Cethin,

The issue is people just deciding things based on gut feeling. DF might be ASCII, but that doesn’t mean it has to look like to does out of the box. There are tons of packs that change the characters (as in letters and symbols) into tiles. The old ASCII graphics with a replacer pack don’t look that different from the modern tiles. The biggest difference is the tiles can display more information. Dwarves can show their clothing, skin color, beards, etc now, where before it would just be a default dwarf picture.

A lot of people who think graphics are that important never actually gave games a try that didn’t look like what they expect/want. They may have loved them if they got over the looks. That is the biggest hurdle, that some people think looking nice effects how good the game is to play, which just isn’t the case.

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

I mean the big part of why I want the steam version is the mouse control (also waiting for adventurer mode, which is something I did actually play with original ascii DF with tilesets later down the road), yes yes I know its slower but when you are learning a new game sometimes its just easier to take it slow like that. Yes typically ascii games do have tilesets with them at least the ones I know of CDDA, DF, and ADOM, its just people want things to be "good" out of the box. They don't want to faff about for 2 or 3 hours to get the "optimal" experience.

Have you seen Aurora 4x? It is probably one of the deepest 4x space games on the market to this day. The problem is it looks like a spreadsheet and I'm sorry but when people are focused on gameplay only style games, one of the things that get dropped off by the wayside is the user experience and the UX. It is fucking efficient as fuck once you have it down but when you are trying to learn the system, its a bit of a cliff to overcome and if you don't have a ton of time to game that can be quite the burden on someone. Seriously for newcomers it can seem a bit counterintuitive that capslock/shift dramatically change what actions you can take (talking from personal experience was very thrown off by capslock actually have an effect on what you are doing since shift + key is pretty normal for rts/stuff).

Cethin,

For DF, the classic version does have some mouse controls with DF hack. Just download the Lazy Noob Starter Pack (I think that’s the name) and you’ll be started in less than 10m with a character pack and plug-ins.

Yes, I’ve played Aurora4x. It’s a wild game. I think the worst thing isn’t just that it looks like a spreadsheet, it’s that it is just spreadsheets with a game using it as inputs. It also doesn’t tell you anything about how things function or what to do to get anything done. It’s similar to DF in some of those ways, except DF you can still play some without fully understanding it. A4X really requires a pretty good grasp of most components of the game before you can even start.
